Hey So after Monterey we moved back up the coast to Santa Cruz we had already stopped here for a day so we knew we liked the town it had a really nice beach and the weather was amazing, we hung out here for a week and then made our way to San Francisco for the first few days we stayed in a hostel at Fishermans Wharf and let me tell u it def was not the best or worst hostel (it had no rats) we had stayed at but the staff had no idea what they were doing and there was nothing close to the hostel except a Safeways. But besides that it haad abosolutley amazing views of both the golden gate bridge and Alcatraz. We walked the few miles ot the GG bridge on ... read more

Jo dragged my ass out of bed at 0830 (NB I am writing this bit a few days later in a bar in San Francisco and she dictated that last bit to me). We cabbed to Las Vegas airport and caught our America West flight to San Francisco, arriving at 1310. San Franciscos public transport system (BART) is amongst the best anywhere in the world and we were at Powell & Market in no time at all. My previous memories of San Francisco flooded back as we were met by a homeless guy offering directions to our hotel. This is unfortunately commonplace in San Francisco but these guys are always making the effort and are without doubt the most entrepreneurial bums anywhere. He was a nice enough bloke and he knew where we were going so ... read more

San Francisco: Feb 18th - 22nd 2006 So we boarded our plane back at Heathrow for our 10 hour flight over to San Fran, during which time Virgin Atlantic presented every passenger with about 7 meals and 25 snacks of varying kinds (not that we complained, we're budgeting for the next 6 months...dry bread and water for us...and besides who's going to turn down free ice cream...?). We kept ourselves entertained with the in-flight games, mainly Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (I think Katie managed a record 32,000..) Anyway, we arrived in San Francisco and after retrieving our bags made our way to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit...or something similar) and lugged our packs onto the train for the half hour train ride. Every station was announced by an excessively cheery train conductor-type who ... read more

I spent 2 nights in San Francisco. Saturday night (Feb. 18/06) was spend touring Fisherman's Warf, which was cool, but a bit too touristy. I did break down and buy yummy clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl for supper though - all the vendors and restaurants had them. Sunday, I hung out with Nat from Australia. We rented bikes and rode along the water to the Golden Gate Bridge. The scenery on the way there was really pretty, but the bridge itself was crowded and loud. The rugged shoreline past the bridge was gorgeous and we attempted to continue our bike tour along here to see Golden Gate Park, but we took a wrong turn and wound up on the disappointing trip back to where we came from on a narrow pathway alongside the bridge ... read more

Hello! Here I am in San Francisco where I have been for the past couple of days. 26th Jan 06 Travelled from LA to Santa Cruz on an eight hour bus trip, or four two hour bus trips as I like to think of it. Kelly picked me up - yay! Got to see her for the first time since we were 13. 27th Jan 06 Morning - went shopping in downtown Santa Cruz and discovered we must be getting ripped off in Australia big time. I got some cool socks with Sushi on drawn on them. Afternoon - explored beautiful highway 1 on the California coast as we made our way to see the elephant seals at Ano Nuevo state park. There were heaps and heaps of them - over 1000 the guide said - ... read more

Slept better last night due to the use of ear plugs. The English duo who arrived the night before were leaving because the hostel is too quiet, I agree! But we stay cos it's so cheap for a major city. It's time for our trip to Alcatraz, the famous prison on the island in the bay. The ferry took us to the island where we had a good 2-3 hours to walk around by ourselves and also with a personal audio guide walkman which was excellent. On our return we took the 'historic' F-line tram to the town hall and walked back through the crack-den Tenderloin district to Union Square where we took a lift to the top of Macy's department store for the view of the city centre. Next stop was to take one of ... read more

Not much sleep in the 24 bed dorm due to the rhythmic snoring of a few of the residents :p Had our free breakfast in the hostel of bagels and waffles then went for a walk to Fisherman's Wharf where it started drizzling with rain. Had a look round the Maritime museum and then on to Ghiradelli's chocolate factory, which I though would still be a working factory but it turned out to be mearly a shell which had been turned into posh shops and restaurants with an 'historic' walk telling you about the original use of the buildings. We did get a free choc bar from the shop though, mmm. Walked some more up probably the steeped street I've even had the displeasure to walk up, to find the famous crooked street which twists down ... read more

If you had a list of the things that made up a full, rich life, would you include a date in San Francisco under a full moon? Would the fact that it was a blind date and you would be making a special stop just for that purpose add to the romance or scare you off? I had not considered such a thing to be on my list until the opportunity presented itself. Thanks to my sister-in-law and her Jewish match-maker instincts I was presented with the opportunity during my travel down the West Coast. Scott Peck wrote that the element of mystery is a big part of romance. San Francisco is the West Coast’s most romantic city. Add a full moon, and how can you not give it a shot. Spending time with an attractive, ... read more
