How many of you know how to pronounce victuals? I know you former English and literature instructors know the answer. It is pronounced vittles. And we plan to try many of the local victuals in the San Diego area, starting with Mexican food. Proximity to the border and to the Pacific Ocean makes San Diego an ideal place for eaters. After watching Andrew Zimmern of "Delicious Destinations", and having visited a similar shop in Mexico City, our first stop is Lucha Libre Tacos. This is from their website: Our gourmet tacos are made with the freshest ingredients, and we are proud to have been voted Best Burrito in town. Only at Lucha Libre you can get the famous “TJ” dog: an all beef hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with grilled vegetables. We do not ... read more

So I did not make a blog post about Phoenix because my main focus was hanging and staying with family. A lot of talking and catching g up. Made a couple trips to see grandma. Of course we did go to a baseball game and get some good Mexican food too. This time uncle bob even let me pay for something without throwing the credit card at the ice cream lady. Then off to the adventure to San Diego. Midway in Yuma AZ we got our west coast stop at in and out burger. We looked up the secret menu and then ordered our items. Mike went with the double double animal style while I went with the 3x3. Then we all felt huge lumps in our stomach but I think that is Normal. Once we ... read more

I woke at 5, tried to sleep until 5:30, and then went to the only other room available to me, the bathroom. It wasn't too bad though, I had dragged the office chair in there the night before and had a comfortable place to read, type yesterdays journal entry and play my games on my phone. Up and moving we had finished breakfast by 9 and were out the door by 10:30am. Again we stopped at Subway for lunch supplies and were through the gates just about 11am. Abcde and I raced to the dolphin stadium and saw 90% of the same show we had seen twice the day before. What can I say, we love watching dolphins perform. We then went to the penguin exhibit followed by the arctic circle where we saw beluga whales, ... read more

We three slept well in this beautiful Hilton Garden Inn. Up shortly after dawn we breakfasted in the restaurant courtesy of my Hilton Honors Gold status. Fed and caffinated, wife started getting the monstruo ready while I logged into the hotel computer and bought 2-day passes for us to Sea World. I know it is not that big of a park, and can likely be seen in 1 day but we are towing a two year old and she will need a slower pace and some down time. Leaving the hotel, I earned a dirty look from wife when I rode up on a flowerbed curb while leaving the parking lot. No permanent damage but I was a bit chagrined. We stopped at a Subway and grabbed something to eat later, park food is expensive and ... read more

It is time to leave Los Angeles, if only for a few days. Karina and Joel have been wonderful hosts but they do need to go to work and I would like to see Orcas before the state of California forces Sea World to release them to the wild or put them down or something. So we are going to San Diego, its only 2 hours away and justifies having rented a car. We arise at a reasonable hour and while Abcde and I make it to the breakfast area first, Wife is seated before us. I think it was because I went and re-installed the carseat before Abs and I joined the line for omlets. Abcde nibbled random bits, I had a delicious omlet and Caroline ate anything she could find without eggs in it. ... read more

Geo: 32.7157, -117.162We arrived at our motel in San Diego inthe early afternoon but were able to check in early. Our motel was very near the Old Town section of San Diego so we walked over to it and got a few more strolling miles in sightseeing in that area. After our Old Town walk, we hopped in the car for what we thought would be a quick scouting trip to the rental car return location and to find a gas station to fill up the car before returning it the next morning. This turned out to be much harder than it should have been. We probably drove in several ever expanding circles before finding the first gas station only to discover that it only accepted debit cards or cash. Since I do not like using ... read more

64 out of 73 mushers finished the race. The last musher to arrive was Cindy Abbott. She got the Red Lantern Award. The significance of this is that they don't extinguish the lamp until the last musher comes into Nome. I put her musher profile up several days ago. Cindy Abbott has Wegener’s granulomatosis. I can't imagine doing a race like this and managing your illness. She also summitted Mt. Everest after she was diagnosed with the disease! Incredible! The Iditarod Race is almost finished. I will post when all the mushers have reached Nome. Why volunteer? To quote Dr. Seuss: Oh! The Places You'll Go! Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care. About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there." With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street. And you may not find any you'll want to go down. In ... read more

MITCH SEAVEY - the Dad. His son Dallas was in hot pursuit but couldn't close the gap. Mitch finished March 14 15:40 hours and Dallas finished March 14 18:25 hours. I tried to put a table in here but it didn't format well. First woman across is Jessie, and Aliy came in on Wednesday. Poor Aliy's dogs had a virus and were not doing well in the beginning, but they got better and her times really picked up towards the end. Jessie started and finished with 16 dogs - good for her. I can't figure out why Dallas was down to 7 dogs. Here's a newspaper article: Mitch Seavey becomes oldest, fastest musher to win Iditarod img=https://www.yahoo.com/sy/ny/api/res/1.2/jFJ4GVeXE6x5beCkkpRfbw--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjtzbT0xO3c9ODQ7aD04NDtpbD1wbGFuZQ--/http://l.yimg.com/os/152/2012/04/21/image001-png_162613.png.cf.jpgMARK THIESSEN... read more

I'm back in San Diego, but still reporting on the Iditarod. Feels weird to be in warm, southern CA while the mushers are still out on the snowy, icy trail. The top 5 mushers keep trading places and it's hard to keep up with. But right now Mitch Seavey is in first place (he's the Dad Seavey, Dallas is his son & currently in 2nd place). They are at a place on the Iditarod Trail that crosses the Bering Sea. This area can be very cold and windy. In previous races mushers have gotten disoriented due to the blowing snow, getting off course, and accepting help (which means they are out of the race). I just checked the weather for checkpoint Shaktoolik and the temperature is 7, wind 6 mph, and snow flurries. I did hear ... read more
