I had fun when I went to California. The last time I went was a while ago, but it was nice. Sacramento, to me, is not like San Francisco at all. The city itself is really nice. For the most part, on my last trip, we just checked out Old Sacramento. That part of Sacramento is so different. They have actually wooden sidewalks. It was pretty cool. We stopped by the California State Railroad Museum for a while. It was interesting. Not the best if you're a younger adult, but still interesting. There was plenty of unique stores and shops you could go into. I recommend just about any. You won't find many of the same anywhere else, so just stop by one even if you aren't going to buy anything. As far as restaurants go, ... read more

Hello from California. Our first day out was a long one driving from Boulder City to Lee Vining, CA which is a small town by Mono Lake and just east of Yosemite National Park. Arrived late to very cool mountain weather. Since we were right by Mono Lake on Tuesday we thought we would kayak on the lake before entering the park. Got information and were told that best to kayak in the mornings and be off the lake by noon since high winds can come up quickly on most days and need to get off the lake ASAP if they do. We got to the lake around 10:30, unloaded the kayaks, got on the water and about 10 minutes later the high winds started. They were definitely strong so we worked our way back to ... read more

Our long awaited first vacation to Europe is quickly arriving. We have less than a week before we depart, and I think it's finally starting to sink in that we will soon be on a new continent, far away from home. We have yet to complete our final packing lists (or even begun packing for that matter), but have reserved the entire weekend and Monday-Tuesday for that fun activity. Charlene has done a great job getting things ready - working with our travel agent and getting equipment I would have totally forgot (chargers/converters, money belts, etc). We got our passports back in December, and were all worried about the reported delays, but got our's within 2 weeks. I got my International Drivers License, and have read up a little on the road signs and traffic laws ... read more

Hey Everyone! Just a few housekeeping items before I take off on my abbreviated world tour. Thanks for all of your well wishes and advice. I've tried to head most of it (at least the parts that seemed sensible) and I am looking forward to a grand adventure. So that you are in the know, I will leave for China tomorrow, arriving in Bejing around 2pm on Tuesday (that's going to be 11ish pm Monday California time). I am hoping that I will have access to this site on my trip and if I do and I have the time/energy, I will try and keep you all updated with my profound insights (haha) and some pictures as well for those of you who prefer not to read. :) I will be missing most of you (some ... read more

I’m currently in Sacramento for my cousin Tiffany’s wedding, which is being held at a winery outside of town. Have been re-united with my dad, who’s hair is growing back after spontaneously shaving ALL of it off, a surprise to my mom 4 weeks ago which left her in tears! It’s been a blast seeing extended family and meeting a couple relatives I didn’t know i had. Erin came in this afternoon from Spokane, where she is almost finished with her Masters in Education. I haven’t seen my sis since she left for Japan in January! We all headed to the wedding which was at a winery in the central valley of CA. It was sunny and warm, with temperatures in the 80s. As soon as I sat down in the middle seat, my typical spot ... read more

"For thousands of years the Sacramento Valley has provided winder haven for ducks, geese, and swans. Waterfowl migrate here by the millions from as far away as the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Siberia. The habitats of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex are islands in a sea of agriculture in Sacramento Valley of California. This valley represents the single most important wintering area for waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway." So if this place is so great, why have so many people not even visited it? (I visited with some couples from Sacramento while in San Andreas who have never heard of it, and also I never heard of it when I lived in Davis, California years ago)... So the story goes: As I was driving down I-5 going north on my way to San ... read more

21 April 2008: I returned from my journey to PAWS. Actually, PAWS has two sanctuaries (both located out of the Sacramento area). The new one that will eventually house all of PAWS' animals is called ARK 2000 (2400 Acres of land in San Andreas, California). I was able to spend a full day there, mostly just hanging out and watching the elephants. I could have done that for another full day easily! PAWS currently has 11 elephants total (Asian and African, which are kept separated). ARK 2000 also now has over 30 tigers. At the original sanctuary (which I was also able to visit) is located in Galt, California (PAWS in Galt is on approx. 80 Acres+). There are a variety of wild animals from monkeys, 1 black leopard, lions, tigers, mountain lions (cougars), bears, 1 ... read more

Do you know, Portland Amtrak station has a neon flashing sign proudly proclaiming "Union Station - Go By Train". I think it lies! Our trains got cancelled! This was sad BUT we got an extra (albeit rainy) day in Portland and we still get to travel to all our destinations - mostly via bus! Portland to Sacramento was an especially memorable trip by Greyhound bus, cost me $73 for the privilege and I got no sleep and Ellie's elbows in my sides! Train stations which announce that you can travel by train and then proceed to helpfully inform you that you need to buy a bus ticket really shouldn't call themselves train stations. Useless idiot stations maybe. I'm not bitter though (anymore) as the whole trian-bus palava seems quite funny now and we get to see ... read more

We made it back, yeah! The flight from London to Los Angeles was long but uneventful. The individual TVs in economy in Air New Zealand helped a lot to pass the time. After going through customs, we gave Mike a hug and said goodbye as he took a Super Shuttle back to UCLA. The rest of us got ready for our Southwest flight back to Sacramento. The flight ended up leaving an hour late and we didn't get back to the house until midnight (9am Spain time). What a long day! Here's our Top Ten experiences from our trip: 1. Sintra - hiking the Moorish castle, enjoying the great views and fairy tale Pena Palace. 2. The Alhambra - learning a lot from our interesting guide and seeing the snow capped Sierra Nevada. 3. Ceremony of ... read more
