California. Thats what its all about people, at least it would be if it wasn't 46 degrees, in the shade. Stepping outside is like walking though a huge hairdryer (which to be fair is really good for drying your hair first thing in the morning) but pretty rubbish aside from that. The locals seem to avoid the problem by either, never getting out of their air conditioned houses, cars, malls or, for those too poor to have air con, drinking huge quantities of cheap larger and bashing each other senseless with oars on the American river. Apparently this is called a 'River Riot' or 'Redneck Punting' as I call it. Although its hard to take a superior attitide when you've seen the Cam in full summer under assalt from Chavs hanging off bridges. Sorry its been ... read more

We’d wanted to do Sacramento as a part of a camping trip to Folsom Lake. But all campgrounds seemed full during the memorial weekend. Instead of sitting at home, Sacramento is definitely a better option  So, we started from home around 7 am. We were there by 9 am. We first hit Old Sac (that’s slang for Old Sacramento). On the way to the garage, a cop stopped us to say that no cars were allowed in for 2 days as there was a Jazz festival going on. In any case, downtowns are best seen on foot. So, we parked the car just opposite to CA State Railroad Museum. We headed right there. Entrance fee $8.00. I definitely felt it a little pricey for the place (it looked small from outside). So, we dropped ... read more

After spending 2 days in San Francisco (refer to my post on SF), I decided to visit Sacramento on the 3rd day. Since I had a Greyhound Discovery Pass, I could take an unlimited number of Greyhound rides within 21 days and I could travel between SF and Sacramento without paying additional fares. When I arrived at Sacramento, the weather was lousy. The sky was excessively overcast with a generous serving of rain and lightning... Nevertheless, I made my way to the State Capitol building. (I was fortunate enough not to encounter any flood. After I left Sacramento and returned to San Francisco, I found out from the news that some other parts of California were having severe floods...) When I arrived at the State Capitol, I was relieved. At least for the next one or ... read more

Here's a map: TravelBlog Here's EVERYTHING: (for those of you interested in it) : ) Europe July 24 - Aug 5, 2005 Journal of France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany Day 1 In Flight There seems to be so much to tell already, but I’m waiting for my body to slowly recover itself. I can not very well tell a good story when my body and mind don’t have the same enthusiasm as I feel in my heart. Although I contracted a head cold shortly before setting off I was very fortunate not to experience any major pain on my flights. I actually had a really pleasant two flights. On my way to Washington DC, Dulles Airport, I could see out my window many checkerboard plots of land. I also saw funny, perfectly circular interruptions in the ... read more

So we'll see how this online journal goes... it's a little different than anything I've done before but hopefully it will help keep friends and family updated. Hopefully I'll get some pictures up pretty quick, too. There's only a week left before I fly out, and I feel like there should be another month- because I'm not ready! I didn't realize how much there is to take care of, but between foreign currency, student loans and searching for somewhere to live when I come back (!), time is running short! So hopefully all the packing gets done on time along with the numerous other random things I need to accomplish. It has been terrific to see everyone at school, though, before I leave. I have to say that I will definitely miss UoP more than I ... read more

The YUBA Location: truly middle of nowhere. Reason: Cuz that’s where Alvarez Farms is…. Just outside Yuba City, California is a town called Live Oak. Felicia and Dominica grew up in Live Oak and have 2 houses on their ranch that needed to be emptied, cleaned and yardsaled! Since I could spare the time, I volunteered to help. Mostly though I volunteered because if it were me, I would want to be helped! I wont bore you with the lame details of packing up 50 years and two generations of stuff, except to say…..since the houses have been empty for quite sometime the wildlife had taken over—inside. So in addition to extreme manual labor, heavy lifting, four 40-yard dumpsters and a three-day yard sale, we battled spiders, wasps, mice, rats’ and a snake. Yes, I typed ... read more
