Ann here -- okay, so Katherine has called me on this! I keep saying how I need to wrap this vacation blog up with a final entry... she says I'm not doing it, as I don't want the trip to "end". She's right! If I make this entry, then that makes it final... our amazing trip is over, vacation is over, back to the day-to-day reality of work. Well, our trip has been "over" for two months now, but we talk about it often... laugh about it often... and cherish the endless memories... many of them noted right here in this travel blog. But, with all things in life, we must move on! We recoiled... ending our trip as it had started... at the bike shop! We had to kiss Phil's new bike goodbye before heading ... read more

You are about to embark on an incredible life-safari -G-Ma July 2007 The Abbott children have a disease, which we call "continental ADD". Patients with this self-diagnosed disorder often attempt to cram as many travels into a year as both their budget and mother will allow. Indeed, it was our mother that instilled in us an insatiable desire to travel. From a young age, my mother would take us out of school for four to six weeks at a time, to explore the Indonesian archipelago, discover the forgotten temples of Bagan, Burma, road-trip in Zapatista territory in Chiapas, Mexico. Our trips were never typical and rarely included a beach (we're all too white to tan anyway). Dad's trips always focused on the great outdoors. With dad we have climbed Manchu Picchu and trekked the epic ... read more

I was in a funk lately. Nothing seems to get done, and nothing seems to matter much. Just going through the motion of living, I guess. So, what could be better than taking a leap of faith to a different existence? I'm talking about bungee jumping, of course. I've heard about this guy who organize bungee jumping trips to "somewhere" in Northern California. The time and place have always been shrouded in mystery. I contacted Richard who passed me to John and was given a time and direction to a place that has no address... The day starts with a long drive from Oakland up highway 80 to Sacramento. Summer time in Northern California is beautiful, clear blue sky and warm sunshine. Just beyond Sacramento, the freeway begins to snake up the highland, and evergreen ... read more

And we’re off! After 4 days driving across the country, and another 4 unload, moving furniture, and organizing our house, we have officially started vacationing. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, since yesterday required 13 hours of driving and today a 5 am start. But, back to the beginning. We started from Raleigh, North Carolina on the 18th of June on a cross-country trip. The plan was to drive across in four days, making only one stop, in Oklahoma. Needless to say, the plan was for an uneventful trip. Fortunately, the plan was a success, at least as much as possible when traveling with two drivers, two cats, a dog, two cars, and little elbowroom. The first day took us through North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. The weather was overcast, but rain was avoided. My ... read more

I have been back now for several weeks. I spent my first visiting my sister in Miami, and in Orlando to see my mom and attend the wedding of my niece. My sister made me a fruit and cheese plate and a glass of wine the night I returned and I marveled at the variety of cheese selection - triple cream brie and manchego! No queso fresco, which I like, but gets boring when that is all there is! I also relished the fine glass of chardonnay. From a bottle even! One of the first things I did the next day was go to the nearest Cold Stone and get chocolate ice cream! Made with real cream! Fabulous! It was great to see my family and there was a bonus shuttle launch which we viewed ... read more
