Well I have catching up to do. A few days since my last entry. Since then we had another day in the redwoods, which included driving the truck through a redwood tree. Our last day in Lincoln City we explored along the coast south of Lincoln City. More beautiful giants and some hiking along the coast. We did take in some tourist type things. We did a drive through a redwood tree and took pictures with Paul Bunyan and Babe. We couldn’t resist. Sunday we drove the beautiful coast to Petaluma and are set up here for a few days. Yesterday we did some wine tasting in Sonoma and Napa valley. Tasted some great wines and had lunch at The Sattui winery. Joanne and I use to visit this winery often when we lived in San ... read more

" All the pathos and irony of leaving one's youth behind is thus implicit in every joyous moment of travel: one knows that the first joy can never be recovered, and the wise traveler learns not to repeat successes but tries new places all the time." Paul Fussell Routing: Brookings, Oregon- Redwoods State Park- Mendocino- Petaluma and Newark CA (Home of Cruise America). Distance : 694 km. Total trip distance: 4994 km. Towards the end of any journey there is a tendency to slip into a "Shucks, this is all done and dusted" mode and some of the gloss of the trip loses it's shine. But somehow, with our time running out, it was almost a gift that we set off from Harris Beach State Park in the knowledge that the famous Redwood forests were just ... read more

Today we had along drive of about 200 miles from Yosemite Lakes to Petaluma in Sonoma County. Before setting off the resident mechanic had to fix our leaking waste hose as we needed to dump again. The gasket we had bought was not quite the right one, but it was duly adapted and fitted - result no leakage. We still have a leaking fresh water hose; a new washer has not stopped the leaking from the pressure regulator. That looks like a job for tomorrow. The way suggested by our tour booklet for today involved lots of travelling on toll roads and interstate highways, so our tour leader had put together an alternative route and that was the one we choose to follow. Initially we were travelling out of the pine forest area around Yosemite and ... read more

We had one last claim in Yreka, all the way to the Oregon border and drove there after Burney Falls. From Yreka we needed to get to Petaluma. The plan was that we’d get to Petaluma by late afternoon, Clayton and Jen would join us with their kids and pizza. First delay was at a rest stop where we stopped for lunch. We’d just pulled into the stop and 2 of the grandkids and I had gone into the RV to get lunch stuff. One was still in the truck waking up and Dale was nearby. I was standing at the RV table when a tractor trailer rig came thru, way too fast, pulling into a spot one over from us. The truck proceeded to go thru the parking spot, jumped the curb and hit a ... read more

Today we set a record. Up at 6:30, out of the campground by 7:20, including a shower. It helps we were still on Mountain time (so it felt later) and we did a 97% setup last night. We ate at a nice diner in Ely. The decor was modern camoflage. It was quite busy... we think much busier than they expected. After about 15 minutes, a new lady showed up to wait tables to asssit the obviously harried solo waitress that was there to start with. We left Ely and headed out into the Nevada mountain and desert passes. Lots of passes here also, and the gasoline problem became intolerable to the point where we drove with our windows down the entire way (it was near 90 degrees). Leaving Ely, we shared the road with a ... read more

We are off to Petaluma to spend the weekend with our youngest son and family. This is a different weekend though because it is a surprise weekend for our son. Jen asked if we’d come up and do a surprise Father’s Day celebration and we thought it would be fun. Jen is the planner in the family so we left the planning up to her. She said that we’ll be doing a wine party and arranged a sitter for our granddaughter. Then we will go to brunch on Sunday at a place they’ve wanted to take us. I wrote in Clayton on the calendar on the weekend of Father’s Day. Justin was asking what we’d be doing for Father’s Day and I told him about the surprise weekend for his younger brother. Then Justin mentioned that ... read more

Happpy Canada Day! Today was a very long day of riding and most challenging. We left paradise (moonstone beach) this morning and started to work our way up the coast highway - I say "work" because it seems like a workout with all the twists and turns and gearing up and gearing down. My wrist is sore from working the clutch today. We stopped at Ragged Point for an early morning latte and had some fun watching the sea lions. Check out the video!! They were super cute little darlings - well not so little! We made it to Big Sur for lunch and it is at this point that things look familiar because we did this part of the coast last year. The weather was sunny but cool for sure - I was completely geared ... read more

Petaluma, CA is where John's brother, Charlie, and his wife, Perry, live. We had a nice relaxing visit with "The Other Freemans" and the petaluma hills were actually GREEN. The hills are usually brown in most of Califronia when we have visited later in the summer. It was interesting to learn about the history of The Petaluma Adobe and Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.... read more
