The next day greeted us with that same vicious heat. We were in the pool before 11 am and thankfully there were less people. We stood still in the water, so as not to accidently exercise, and tried to keep cool, but it wasn’t working. We went back to the room for lunch. Zack prepared delicious grilled chicken avocado sandwiches and Ralph’s French loaf. Ralph’s has the most amazing bakery bread! After lunch, we napped. For 2 hours we slept! In the middle of the day! We got up and decided to go to Joshua Tree National Park to see in the night sky. So at 6:00, we ventured out to the local Sam’s Club, our “home away from home”. We always go there on our vacations for discount pizza and giant sodas and the strange ... read more

Another late morning arrived and we enjoyed our coffee and cereal while watching a PBS special on how to find Supertwisters. Did you know a tornado can create winds of over 300 mph? The vicious heat prompted us to find something to do inside. We drove around the city of Palm Desert and found an entire strip mall of thrift stores! It was exciting, but pricey. We left with a few records to add to our collection and hunger that could only be satisfied with fish tacos. We went in search of Rubio’s and found on within a half mile. Four fish tacos, chips, a coke with lime, and a cup of pintos for $12.00! The food was delicious! Seriously, the best fish tacos we have ever eaten, and we live in little Mexico! We spent ... read more

Well, we won’t have much to blog about for this day…or the next 6, but we’ll try to keep you up to date. We woke up at about 11 and made some coffee and breakfast. Jenn lived her dream of doing the USA Today crossword, while Zack lived his dream of drinking coffee and reading the financial reports (not that he understands them!). With a second cup of coffee, we watched the third Harry Potter movie in bed—in the middle of the day! At about 3:30 we cooked a quick lunch of spaghetti with meat sauce for Jenn and more tacos for Zack. The pool scene was calling, so we got suited up and walked down. The pool next to us is labeled “SHHH! QUIET POOL!”—the drunk crew ranging from 25-55 years old, with an ... read more

Upon waking up we ate our day old donuts, and hurried to check out before 11. We laid out by the pool in the shade--which was a nice little bit of relaxation until the hot, hot desert sun found us. We quickly got up and made our way to the car. We headed out of Vegas—stopping by an Arco gas station. We’ve been avoiding BP stations the whole trip; little did we know that Arco is actually a part of BP. Darn. Zack got a burrito from Jack in the Box and we were off. The sun is amazingly hot out there! It was pretty sceneless, hot sun mirages, brown mountains, brown sand…for miles. Finally, we got on the stretch of I-15 that wraps itself around the edge of the Mojave Desert. It was pretty cool ... read more

The weather has been so crummy in the entire U.S. that we just decided to stay a little longer in Palm Desert, Calif. The weather hit 103 yesterday, but it's dry heat! We finished up getting our new motorcoach ready for the road. I have met some wonderful pickleball players here. The instructor at Thousand Trails, where we are camping, took me under his wing and I have improved my game. Jessie, age 70-something, is my new idol! She started competitions in Oregon....some years ago. She'd wear all her medals but then she couldn't hold her head up! For our 20th wedding anniversary Tom took me 8,516 ft up the face of Mt. San Jacinto on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Many of you know I am afraid of heights. Honestly, I did this for Tom. ... read more

Ya'll haven't heard from us because we've just been hangin' out for the winter. We are still in Palm Desert, Calif. The weather has been the best in the U.S. this winter. We said goodbye to friends Bruce and Sandy as they headed to their place in Branson; Bob and Janet headed to Florida and we had a brief visit with RV Dude, Bruce, and Diva, Kathy before they headed for a cruise to Alaska. Met up with friends Sheryl and Alan for a quick Happy Hour. Also, had a "girls day out" which included a doggy fashion show in Palm Springs! There is so much to do in this area. We went to a wind farm.....nearly 4,000 wind turbines. We learned about "clean energy." The bat and the moth and migratory birds have to be ... read more

Day Seven Palm Springs We slept in a bit...the previous occupant had cleverly and maliciously set the alarm for 3:30 AM....so we needed a bit of extra sleep. We had a good breakfast (inlcuded in our incredible price of $57/night in this hotel where the list price is $133...thank you, Hotwire!) and headed out to check out the local thrift stores on the way to the Palm Spring Tramway....one of the wonders of the world...(kind of). After buying a sweater (Lynn) and nothing else (Bill), we drove to the foot of the mountains where the road to the tram climbs up a few thousand feet. The tram goes from 2400 feet to 8400 feet in less than fifteen minutes! (Thus the title of this blog.) I had taken it several years ago when I was in ... read more

We took a southern route out of Arizona. First stop was Pio Pico Thousand Trails campground, close to the Mexican border. While there Princess had another emergency visit to the Vet on a Sunday. Three days and $900 later she had a ruptured tumor removed..benign! The border patrol drove their SUV''s through the campground hundreds of times while we were there. One night a helicopter flew over with search lights ablaze! We thought we were on a TV reality show. The "wall" hasn't been finished in this area because they ran out of money. Guess helicopters and SUV's are cheap. Next we moved 100 miles North near a little town of Temecula. (Wilderness Lakes Thousand Trails.) We enjoyed the healthy Farmers market and local wineries. This is the only area we've been in where homeless people ... read more

We are preparing to depart on an 86 day trip that will take us from Los Angeles to Ft Lauderdale aboard an old friend, The Regent Mariner. We lay over for five days in South Florida and then reboard the Mariner for the circumnavigation of South America. If you would like to view our detailed itinerary it is available on the Regent website. For the December 20 - January 5 trip from Los Angeles through the Panama canal it is http://www.rssc.com/cruises/MAR091220/Itinerary.aspx. For the 65 days around South America, the site is: http://www.rssc.com/cruises/MAR100110B/Itinerary.aspx. It is less than two weeks until we leave so we are starting to get quite organized. How does one pack for an 87 day trip? It's actually overwhelming and simple at the same time. We take clothes for touring in the really hot ... read more

We arrived back in La at the end of February to more warm ocean breezes and sunshine. After a couple days at the Ocean we headed inland to Palm Springs area. We had planned on renting a condo for the month of March but after spending a couple days searching the local papers and billboards in the area we settled on a "park model" ( a permenant mobile home with a yard and a place for our RV ) in a resort in Cathedral City called DESERT SHADOWS. The many features that were available to the residents sealed it for us: 2 Large & Well-Maintained Clubhouses Plus 3 More Satellite Clubhouses An Indoor Pool With Large Spa & Co-Ed Sauna Olympic-Size Lap Pool Total of 6 Pools, 5 Spas & 3 Saunas Sunken, Lighted Tennis ... read more
