Oakland CA Sunday morning afore noon - apologies to Johnny Cash. Bo blog or pix with this one - this was definitely a recovery morning form blogging all night and not enuf sleep on (at least) the 2 or 3 previous nights. This is lo-fat milk then, no cream. I have to check out from the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Oakland in 20 mins so this is brief. Hopped off the train from Sacramento here - and struggled to find a hotel at all (long story - later) but lobbed here, $109 + tax more than I wanted to pay but I had spent a hot hour slogging ard the streets here and did not want to go further. If I stayed here tonite Sunday (nothing much in Oakland but, but this area here is in ... read more

One of the things that is anticipated in the Bay Area each year is the first rain of the season. There are distinct seasons here. From mid to late April until the first of November, it is completely dry. It does not rain a single day. Then, in November, it rains quite a lot in non drought years. The dry season is also thought of as the fire season. The first rain therefore is looked upon almost with a sigh of relief. "We've made it through without burning again." As with most changes of the season, there is a certain amount of confusion when the weather turns inclement. In St. Louis, when we get our first inch of snow, the city is paralized. At least initially until everyone eases up on the panic button. So it ... read more

What's in Oakland? The Holy Land Restaurant, a little hole in the wall off Grand Ave., with great fresh pita bread, yellow lentil soup, hummus, falafel, Israeli salad (cucumbers, cabbage, dressing, etc.). Also Noah's Bagels, with pesto and roasted bell pepper bagels with jalapeno schmear. Besides the food, there's the company: Robin, my beautiful daughter. We played a notably short game of War, a game you can play and talk at the same time. I lost badly. One of Robin's roommates, Rashad, commenting on the bumper sticker on her car which declares, "War Is Not the Answer," said "That's not true! What if the question is, 'What sucks more than anything?' Then, 'war' is the answer." ... read more

The day after tomorrow we leave. Still plenty to do........and I decided to have a last minute bake sale to raise what ever funds we can. I know it sounds a little silly, a big medical trip 10 or so boxes of medicines, 200 ponds of supplies lots of other important donations and I am wanting to sell cookies to get every last bit of funds I can to take to Haiti. But that is how Sionfonds has grown. I do everything I can to raise funds and get other people involved too and every bit we do really does make a difference to the people we serve in Haiti. Most people in Haiti live on less than $1 a day, which puts that $1 I get for a cookie in to perspective. the movies doesn't ... read more

Getting things ready to go. Amazing how many little things there are to do still. And I still have to pack. Just checking to see how this blog thing works. I leave tomorrow at 6:10am with Drea from SFO. We fly into Miami and sit there for about 5 hours. Then she leaves a bit earlier than me and we arrive about an hour apart. Taxi to the apartment and then - YEH - Amy & Paul in the flesh. Check back later. Not sure how often I'll blog - but I'll try. love & hugs ... read more

Ok, so I take it some of you are aware that my last entry was more than a little tardy. Let me explain, briefly. It's not that I have given up, it's just that since arriving in the States, the Internet Cafe has become a wholly different beast. No longer the cheap and plentiful things that they were in Europe (OK, not France or Frankfurt airport), if you can actually find one, it's going to cost around $8 per hour, and seeing as it takes me a few hours to write these things I've been unable to swallow such a bitter pill. Most places over here have free WiFi networks which you can just log onto with your laptop. Guess what, I don't have a laptop. Good one Olza, start writing a worldwide travel blog relying ... read more

Woke up at 5:15, was at the front desk for the taxi by 5:45, discovered that the clueless night auditor was working again and she was just as useless when Polly came up to inform her that his Nintendo DS had been taken from the room. A half-hearted "will let you know if we find it" was all he got. The taxi ride was uneventful, except for the first time in 4 days we were in a car with 4 doors and leg room. Checked in at Oakland Airport only to find out that our flight was very delayed. It had not even taken off from Columbus yet. Anyway, got checked in, went thru security, staked out a couple of benches and Polly, Megan, and Gallaway went to sleep. Speck stayed up and read a book, ... read more
