did some cool things here in tucson besides being worked hard by the udall foundation, my scholarship foundation. i went to the biosphere 2, which is a crazy concept. trying to replicate the earth in a building that is completely sealed off from the earth. of course it failed when people tried to live in it because you can never replicate all the wonderful interdependencies of the natural world. ironically, they ran out of oxygen because 'the co2 levels were too high. hmmm. and they didnt even use the plants from the different "ecosystems" for food and medicine. they brought in meds and used chemical intensive agriculture. like that will work on mars. then i went with the udall group to the desert "museum" which is really a zoo. i felt bad for the bear and ... read more

Mt. Trumbull Field School Written in 2007 about my field school experience in 2006 Fear is temporary, regret is forever. --author unknown Mt. Trumbull All would-be archaeologists should go to a field school to become familiar with basic excavation and survey techniques. When I made the decision to study archaeology, I knew it would mean a lot of travel and time away from home. I am lucky to have a very understanding and supportive husband and family. I knew my field school experience would be the true test of whether or not archaeology is a good career choice for me, and if I could handle being away from home for weeks at a time. Mt. Trumbull is a remote location in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona. It is only accessible by a dirt road ... read more

The last few days I have been worried about two things: murdering thieves and murdering, thieving bears. Several friends encouraged me to get a gun, and I did consider it, however, I believe that preparing for war manifests war. So instead I will prepare for a damn good adventure. It’s about time we evolve past man against nature. How about man is nature? So no, I will not be sleeping with a shotgun in my tent. Unless you are a murdering thief, in which case I have a ready arsenal pointed at my tent zipper and I am not making that chck-chck shotgun loading sound with my mouth just to scare you away. If you are a murdering thieving bear, the good stuff is locked in the trunk, unless you are craving skin, bones, fleece, and ... read more

Life is good here in the Grand Canyon. Today I had to get up for work bright and early at 6 AM.... to go to the Colorado River! Woo-hoo! I dropped off a busload of temporary park workers from overseas (hailing from Moldova to Mongolia) for a four and a half hour raft trip through the Grand Canyon, killed some time in Page (you have to be both creative and easily entertained in order for this to be possible), checked out the Glen Canyon Dam (yes, it's huge), and struggled to fully submerge myself in the Colorado at Lee's Ferry. I must say I failed miserably. After taking approximately 30 minutes to acclimate my legs in increments measured in inches, I couldn't bear the icy vise grip of pain that throttled my meat and two veg ... read more

I missed blogging on my last day in Australia and will have that up some day, maybe... but now i'm back in the states and my cerecita met me in scottsdale to take care of me and so i could take care of her. We took a little trip up to Sedona. The highlight for me, since i had been there many times in the past, was seeing cerecita's reaction to the rock formations.. It did feel like only a few days ago i was driving my toyota across the oz outback, where now i'm driving a suped up toyota, a lexus, across the sedona desert; on a red dirt road. The chocolate chex mix was an appropriate snack as we chilled by the river crossing. The river was chocolate brown, like a scene from willy ... read more

I will set out Friday, August 4, 2006, to wander and wonder around the Western USA and on into South America (Ecuador). Phase 1 begins with Phoenix, Arizona to Yellowstone Nat’l Park in Wyoming (via Las Vegas and Utah). Then its 8 days with ARTA Whitewater Rowing School on the Salmon River in Idaho. Then, I hop off the river and meander over to Redwood National Park in California, then its over to Yosemite with stops along the way at Mt. Shasta and Lake Tahoe. From there, I’m off to San Francisco for a few days, and then ride the Pacific Coast Highway all the way down to San Diego, with plenty of stops along the way. Phase 2 is an 81 day Outward Bound Wilderness Expedition, “The Rockies to Ecuador,” in which I will backpack ... read more

7th July to 24th July 2006 Due to a dodgy cab driver dropping me in the wrong place, I waltzed up to the U.S border without a Mexico exit stamp. I was thinking that, because of horror stories I had heard and some of my own previous personal experiences, I would have trouble gaining entry to Estados Unidas. However, my pre-conceptions about the American customs service, or Department of Homeland Security, as I believe it is now named, were entirely unfounded and they dealt with me in an efficient, prompt and polite manner. Good job they didn't find the four pounds of Colombian cocaine I had secreted about my person though! ;-) This was only the first of my pre-conceptions to be dispelled in The States and I have a funny feeling that, as I tour ... read more

Me and Dolon visited the Grand Canyon on the 29th and 30th of May,2006.It was a much awaited and a distant wish to visit the natural wonder. This was also a trip that combined our exhilerating experience at Las Vegas,Nevada. We made a quick decision to visit Vegas and G.C while I was working at North Carolina. It was the coming of a long week end (Don't remember which one) and we wanted to visit some place beyond the East Coast.Las Vegas was the one that seemed most exciting. We took a flight to Atlanta and then a 4 hour flight to Las Vegas.More on Vegas on my next blog! We rented a Chrysler PT from our hotel in Vegas and drove down to a town called Williams. The road trip was quite an experience. In fact I had never ... read more
