If you like golf, this entry is pure indulgence....if you don't like golf, don't worry, more diving is on the way. I went pure "epicurism" over the last few days, it is actually bordering to way too much fun when it comes to golfing. Arizona is a mecca when it comes to golf...and yes, I did play three times the Old course at St Andrews, Scotland! Try to compare Scottsdale in Arizona to St Andrews in Scotland...in November...that's simply not a match! Remember last Monday...I was indeed somewhere 200km north of Port Sudan in the morning. Then the same day came Port Sudan, transit in Khartoum, Dubai. On Tuesday came...left Dubai, transit in Addis, tried to sort out a messy situation in Joburg...Wednesday was...two meetings in Hong Kong, transit in Shanghai and LAX...and finally got a ... read more

The Botanical Gardens here in Phoenix are full of amazing cacti and desert plants. Add to that the work of artist Dale Chihuly (a sculptor in glass), a wet Friday evening, great company and .....boom, a magical evening :-)... read more

Rob Writes: We had enjoyed our time at Monument Valley and it was now time to leave. It had been a great place to escape from our lives and unwind. I will miss it. I feel fortunate I was able to experience what it had to offer and would recommend it to anyone. Time to hit the road! Woo-fucking-hoo. As I write this we have just completed the final leg of our 2000 mile drive, so forgive my pessimism, but right now I hate driving. At the time however, I was quite enjoying myself. We were now going back the way we came, towards Flagstaff and further south to Scottsdale, Phoenix. It was our first long drive, about 5 – 6 hours in total and all in all it was quite uneventful, well, for Tina and ... read more

Hello everyone, we have managed to pay for one day's Wi-Fi which is now on its 2nd day of being active, more evidence of Americas incompetence with internet, so here's a quick update from sunny Arizona. The weather here is fantastic topping 40 degrees most days and providing excellent tanning conditions. Everyone is enjoying a bit of downtime and hence we haven't really done anything worth mentioning. This evening we will be heading into Old Scottsdale which is apparently pretty cool so will give you an update on that later. Kit and Mom have had a game of tennis which Kit only won 6-3 which has led me to believe that if I was still capable of running around a court I would still be able to beat him. Last night's dinner in a very nice ... read more

Right then apologies for the delay in the blogging, the Americans haven’t quite got the hang of free Wi-Fi like the rest of the world so we will not be picking up emails or iMessage texts for much of this week. During our last day in NYC we visited the National History Museum which is a truly awesome place with hundreds of displays and exhibits from extinct dinosaurs and mammals through to current species. The displays are very life like with stuffed animals in the foreground and painted backgrounds blending seamlessly together making it often difficult to see where the real stuff ends and the painting begins. The life size model of a Blue Whale hanging from the ceiling is also quite impressive and gives you an idea of how big this museum is as this ... read more

Los Angeles to Scottsdale, Phoenix Left our lovely hotel in Palm Springs rather reluctantly having enjoyed breakfast outside by the pool. Our only real stop on the trip was at the Joshua Tree National Park which involved a bit of a detour. We entered the park at 29 Palms and drove a little way to see some of the main ‘exhibits’, rather fantastic geological rock formations. One was called the skull and it was obvious why. We also admired the Joshua Trees, like enormous finger-pointing cacti, which grow throughout the park. We drove 40+ miles down through the park to rejoin route 10 and a good 15 of those miles were following a pilot car as the road was being relaid. We were really lucky as we joined the queue behind it just as it set ... read more

West Texas was filled with catus, cattle, dust and heat. Even in April the temperature hit 100 degrees as we came down from Hill Country into the flatlands. But, it did seem to have one very large redeeming factor-OIL. The number of oil transport trucks in that area was phenomenal. We traveled west on HWY 190 and for long stretches we would be completely alone. Then we would come across an area of good oil production and the tanks, derricks and big rigs would be everywhere. The flatlands gave way to a ridge plateau and there up along the bluff were hundreds of the new energy makers in West Texas- wind turbines. It was a strange combination of a desolate landscape combined with a vibrant economy. Finally, we had to relent and take I-10 for the ... read more

Today has seen me become an official coach tour member as Trafalgar Tours’ Western Discover” is on the road. It was quite the rude awakening as we had to be up at 0600 to ensure that we had our bags at our door before 0645 – up until this day we have not been up that early on this trip. The first port of call for the tour is San Diego, which is a two hour trip down the freeway. Thankfully this was at 8am on a Sunday morning so there was little or no traffic. It is fairly boring to write about but the traffic we have been in prior to this has been heavy. We hit rush hour traffic at 6am on the first morning – what should have been an easy 15 -20 ... read more

Thursday 1stDecember Had to get to the airport by 8.00am to catch the plane to Phoenix! It was the bumpiest journey I had ever had and more like a roller coaster ride! Apparently, the Santa Ana winds were to blame, and we learned 25 planes to LA were diverted because of the wind! A few people were sick, and they had to stop serving drinks as it was too dangerous!! Anyway, we duly arrived in Phoenix and met up with Wendy and Peter who took us to Alice’s house in Chandler. We all went out to lunch at a lovely little Italian restaurant before going back to Alice’s for coffee and delicious raspberry tart! Back to Wendy and Peters house where we had a relaxing evening eating my favourite food – salmon and drinking Cosmopolitans and ... read more
