Route 66Route 66Route 66

This is our first encounter with Route 66
Hi All,

This morning we drove over Hoover Dam, the security checkpoint guard recognized us from yesterday. They had to search vehicles and since we have the car topper, we had to open it up and let them look in it.
In Arizona we thought that the landscape would be like southern California, but we saw many wildflowers and cactus that was different than we had ever seen. It was neat to watch, till we started changing elevations. We saw lots of grass plains that were brown and dead. Then we went hours in pine forests, some of the forests had a mixture of trees, but some were dry and dead.

We had lunch in Seligman and took pictures of Route 66, (our first encounter.)

We also thought that the Grand Canyon was desert on top, well it is not! There are trees all the way up to the rim! I have included a picture of the first view that I saw, and I haven’t any words to describe it! I asked the others and they really don’t have words either. The kids both walked up to the edge where there wasn’t any fence, they were in such

awe! Lucky I was watching them at the time, and redirected them.

We went to Mather Point lookout first and then went over to the Hopi House, and looked out behind it. The Hopi Indians were small people, we had to almost bend in half to go through the door when we went inside. There are nice things to buy that are made by the Indians, and some Grand Canyon things. We each bought a magnet made with sandstone from the Grand Canyon.

We stopped about 20 minutes south of the Grand Canyon and did a geocache at the ‘Yabba Dabba Doo’ camp ground, we took pictures of the kids. We then headed to Flagstaff, and reached 8,048 ft. above sea level, we are keeping track of elevation.

Flagstaff is really neat, it is all pine forest, you cannot see most houses from the roads. As we left Flagstaff we left the trees and haven’t seen them since. Now we are staying in Holbrook, Az. for the night.
