After our breakfast at the Mile High, I returned to the lodge to work on these blogs and the rest of the crew headed back into town. Since today was relatively relaxing after the 3 hour flight and tomorrow would be a long day doing an 8 hour bus tour of Denali Natl Park, tonight we were going to dinner with Howard and Darlene at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, a high end lodge with a great restaurant. It's about a half mile away and located up on a large hill. It has a wonderful view of the Alaska Mountain range and Mt. McKinley. I went there 3 years ago before my previous glacier flight and that's where I dropped and broke my camera from the raised outside deck. (martinis WERE involved!) Howard surprised us by telling ... read more

The day after our Brooks River excursion, we checked out of our hotel in Anchorage and started driving the 2-1/2 hour drive to the town of Talkeetna. On the way, we would pass through Wasilla, Sarah Palin's home town and saw a lot of pretty scenery once again driving north on the Parks Highway. The weather was pretty good, 60's and cloudy, but no rain. We arrived at our home for the next 3 days, the Susitna River Lodge, about 2:30 in the afternoon and checked in. It was an opportunity for me to catch up with Howard and Darlene, the owners of the lodge. When I was here 3 years ago, they were very kind and hospitable to me after I dropped and broke my camera the night before my glacier landing flight. (Howard loaned ... read more

... read more

Took a bus from Seward to Talkeetna. Talkeetna is a small outpost, mainly used as the gateway to Denali for mountain climbers and hikers. Took a flight to Mt. McKinley (Denali) from there, then took the train to Fairbanks, en route to the Arctic. Taking a flight to Prudhoe Bay in the Arctic tomorrow, then bussing it back 800 km across the tundra to Fairbanks along the Dalton Highway. ... read more

We finished the last of the puzzle before we had breakfast at the lodge. It was rainy and overcast again. Last night it was chilly enough to see our breath, but it wasn't that bad this morning. We got on the road again. Even though we were out on a remote highway, it didn't feel so remote because there were houses and businesses fairly close together along the road. Maybe there was nothing in back of them for 100 miles, but it still didn't feel remote. Also, we didn't see any moose or bears AGAIN! We took a short detour to Talkeetna for lunch. We remembered the roadhouse there. When we were there before, there was one serving for lunch and one for dinner. Everyone sat at one long table and you ate whatever the cook ... read more

Howard, the owner of the Susitna River Lodge, sent me some pictures he recently took of Brown Bears. They are so cool I had to add them to this story. I guess I always didn't have perfect luck. I wish I had been there when, as Howard said, they were overrun with bears. Thanks Howard.... read more

(If you've been wondering why I took so long to add this update, read on and you'll find out.) I left Fairbanks with Denali National Park as my next destination. Thanks to the good old Milepost I finally found an interesting bar along the highway: Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn. I had a beer (no Bloody Mary mix or tomato juice) and checked out the most extensive collection of goofy, utterly tasteless sexual humor I've ever seen...... It was great. I got to the park mid-afternoon and decided to drive in as far as they allow cars, only 15 miles. To really see the park, you have to take a bus. There are several different tours, but to see the whole park it's an 8 hour day so I decided to head down to Talkeetna where they ... read more

Hello again: I hope you had a good Labor Day weekend. I worked in the yard most of it, but there was much to do after being "in the last frontier" of Alaska. (That's how my yard was looking.) I ended the last time in Denali. After the awesome plane ride to and around Mt. McKinley, I met up with Shirley, Mike and Linda for the 5 hour train ride to Talkeetna. The distance is only 121 miles but the train only goes about 25 miles an hour. It is a "scenic" train, not a "transportation" train. And the scenery was beautiful. The railroad goes along the river through the mountain valleys, so there are often high mountains one minute and crossing river gorges the next. (As Shirley and I have been watching the video I ... read more

August 7, 2008 Rafting ride on the Talkeetna River in Alaska. Talkeetna. a small tourist/artist town that is just southeast of the Denali National Forest and is a starting point for many of the mountain climbers that dare to scale the peaks. I arrived in Talkeetna after two nights in Anchorage. I stayed at a lovely hostel in town and found my way wandering through town where I spotted a sign for a rafting ride. Who can say no? Had a wonderful Bear Tooth Ale while waiting for the trip and then we gathered together and traveled in a van to our launch site. It was a very beautiful evening. We didn't see much wildlife, but a bald eagle, beaver, and salmon. Apparently we missed a baby bear by about 20 minutes. (Which would probably mean ... read more

Finally on the way out of Talkeetna, after many days of hiding herself, she is finally out. (Well almost, you can kind of see the peak through the clouds. Drove back to Anchorage and on the way stopped in Palmer to drop off Jennifer and Tressa, two travelers from San Francisco making their way through Alaska. Palmer is in the valley where there are many farms framed by the mountains. I loved the barn frame and flowers!... read more
