Wednesday 26th, Thursday 27th, Friday 28th April 2023 He certainly made the right call not to go to Kushiro!! There was a storm forecast for that area and we were just going to skirt around the edge of it! It was a wild night!! All balcony doors were locked, the storm wind whistling all night, gale force 11, and angry seas with 25ft waves! This lasted all night and all the next day and made moving around the ship quite difficult (the ship has excellent stabilisers!!) Then on the Friday we woke up to blue sky, blue sea and sun! The wind was still quite strong and there were white horses on the sea but a definite improvement. So far the clocks have been/going forward by 1hr a night which means a total of 3 hrs ... read more

Each time I see Jack he tells me that I should come up to Alaska and spend time with him at his fish camp. This summer I did. Jack is an old college friend. He and his wife, Ann, have been fishing salmon commercially in Kodiak, Alaska, for 30 years. They are among a small group of licensed setnetters, which means that every summer they move from the town of Kodiak to their rustic camp near where their nets are deployed. Three times a day, like spiders, they harvest several hundred entangled salmon. The fish are stored on ice in a holding skiff. Every other day a tender picks up the fish and takes them to a cannery in town. Bear Garden There are several fish camps scattered around Uganik Pass, the body of water separating ... read more

Kodiak Island is about the size of CT. It is referred to as the Emerald Isle and it lives up to it's name. Once again we boarded a boat to explore the shoreline and islands. The boat was a 42' yacht and once again our group was limited to six. This gave us all plenty of room to sit in the cabin for hot chocolate or go out on deck to watch for wildlife. Captain Marty Owen is a retired Harbor Master in Sitka. Marion Owen, his wife, is a professional photographer and gave me helpful hints. I am basically I'm a point and shoot type of gal so I am grateful for any advice. Our first encounter was a bull sea lion hauled up on a custom built hauling area constructed under Marty's supervision when ... read more

We flew into Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, and were greeted by Becky’s brother, Phil, his wife, Ok-Kyung and their two children, Alexander and Sophia who live there. Her other brother, Matt and his wife, Helen, flew in from California later that night so we all had several days together as a family before the next leg of travel. Matt and Helen, avid birders, had planned a side trip to Kodiak with a particular quest in mind – to capture a natural close up of a tufted puffed on its cliff-side perch. They remembered seeing a great number of puffins on a ferry ride from Seward to Kodiak many years earlier. We had pre-arranged to join them so the four of us had ferry reservations between Homer and Kodiak, a slight route variation but one that made ... read more

Kodiak is one of those smaller towns in Alaska which has not been transformed by the large jewelry merchants of the Caribbean who come north for the summer and hustle the tourist trade. We’ve had more than one tour guides, train guides, bus drivers and such ask, “By a show of hands, how many of you came here to shop in the diamond stores?” So far nobody has raised their hands. One bus driver apologized for asking, saying “I just had to ask. I haven’t found anyone yet to say yes!” But obviously, some cruisers must buy from them or they wouldn’t be here! It is one of the reasons that Kodiak is a nice place to visit; because, it hasn’t been spoiled yet by outside influences. It was one of the reasons that we wanted ... read more

Just wanted to fill my friends in on my latest adventure. Planning on moving up to Alaska for the summer at least. Going to work on a fishing boat off the coast of Kodiak Island. I will be staying in an off-the-grid cabin with my cousin Jeb. My mom and I are driving there by way of Seattle and then through British Columbia. It looks like a pretty awesome drive with tons of things to see. Our Alaska Road Trip Itinerary starts in Seattle. We are renting an RV and plan on driving to Anchorage, which is about 2400 miles one-way. Obviously, it is going to take a few weeks to really enjoy the trip there. The first leg of our itinerary takes us from Seattle through Bellingham to Vancouver, British Columbia. For an incredibly scenic ... read more

Mountains towered and rolled in a 180-degree panorama. The sun sifted through the small breaks in the clouds, sprinkling the bay with short bursts of light. Waves crept in and out between the rock-creviced shore. Driftwood blended any barrier separating the rocky shore from the damp, greening grass. Our tent settled under leafless trees, scattered with trunks and branches squiggling the grey sky in reach what rays they could grasp. Marya and I sat in two camp chairs. The humble crackling of the coals harmonized with the subtle crashing of the waves close by. Steam from our sweating reindeer sausages rose and filled the fresh clean air. The near by tree swing made of beach-salvaged rope and drift wood still swung from our recent attempts to reach the clouds with our feet. All else was still. ... read more

Just Kidding! Just couldn’t come up with something with a “K” that applied. With a 6:30AM arrival in Kodiak Alaska, we were just rising, sleeping in a bit before our 11AM tour of Kodiak sites and Russian Tea. We had a leisurely breakfast, and John resumed his eggs benedict with sausage and potato cakes, and Sharon had a French toast. Our tablemates were a couple, the man had eaten lunch with us on the boat tour while the Amsterdam was docked in Anchorage (and after a bus ride thru the tunnel to Whittier) and his wife. His wife wasn’t on the earlier expedition, and he had alluded to her not feeling well, but Sharon and I were both surprised by her saying that 14 days on a cruise was too much and she was ready to ... read more
