I am find myself wanting to leave for Peru now. Perhaps I want to escape the frustration of life, of relationships (or lack there of) and disappointments that seem to occur in every day life. If I could leave today I would. If I could pack up everything in my 12x12 dry cabin, throw half of it away, give away a quarter, then keep the rest wishing I had the guts to throw that away too, I would. If I could buy my plane ticket for today instead of for five weeks from now when Fairbanks is cold and starting to grate on me even more than it already is, I would. If I could leave without putting myself through the pain of feeling like I don’t belong, that people are not what I thought they ... read more

My planned afternoon of repacking and organizing documents turned into a four hour motorcycle ride out to a place called Murphy Dome. The ride out to Murphy Dome doesn’t take four hours unless a person (or in our case, persons) drives from North Pole and back with frequent stops and off-roading. I imagined spending my time cleaning my little cabin, studying, and living in a quiet and simple manner for the last few weeks until I leave for Peru. However, thanks to adventurous friends, this was not the case, at least for the first two days. It all began when I was sitting on Jason’s only piece of furniture left in the living room, an ornamental carpet of red and black. He was trying to sell his house and had sold or given away most of ... read more

Back on the road after fun times in Denali. What to expect from Fairbanks! We were steeped in anticipation! It had been just a few months over a decade since my last visit to Fairbanks and my recollections of it were that it was somewhat anti-climactic. We arrived in the mid morning, and boy was I right. Basically Fairbanks is like Middletown in Alaska. The car was in need of an oil change, being a solid 4000 miles overdue, and there were a few food items we needed so we began our search for the local Wal-Mart. Every other town we have been to that has a Wally-World (including Anchorage) does not make it difficult to find. With no prior knowledge of a town, you can often drive through it and simply look for Wal-Mart and ... read more

Greetings from Michigan: We are home and internet service is both easier to use and less costly. :) I will begin to "catch you up" on our trip. In a word--fantastic. But I will elaborate. As mentioned earlier, we arrived in Fairbanks. (two weeks ago tonight) Since it was only 5 pm we had plenty of time to check into the hotel, then find someplace to eat. The Princess Cruise Line and Hotels do a terrific job of checking in and transfers, so that went smoothly. We found a restaurant next to the Chena River and had dinner. (about 7:30 which was 11:30 in Michigan. When we finally called it quits and went to bed, we had been up and going about 22 hours. Friday morning came early and we went on a river cruise down ... read more

Thursday August 21 - Saturday August 23 - 08 During the day at Denali the clouds had gathered and as the train pulled away from the station it started to rain but a few miles down the track the sun was out all the way to Fairbanks. Friday morning we went on our own to the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The museum is world class with various exhibits of the First Nation People, the gold rush era, native animals and modern art. That afternoon our tour included a cruise aboard the sternwheeler Discovery Experience on the historic Chena and Tanana Rivers. Along the way we stopped at Trail Breaker Kennels, the home of the late Susan Butcher, the first female winner of the Ididarod. We then proceeded to the Chena ... read more

Greetings from Fairbanks: With all that went wrong before, everything has gone right so far. We have had a day of history and walking around Fairbanks. Shirley is doing well with the arm and Mike and I almost got to play golf. The weather has been about 70, but about 7:30 each evening it has rained and the temps have fallen. The flight here went very well, except for the fact that we were on planes for 8 hours. We left home at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and arrived here at 9 p.m. EST. (5 pm Alaskan time) So as I type it is 10 p.m. here and 2 a.m. at home. We leave for Denali Park in the morning and are hoping for a site of Mt. McKinley. The trip from here on should get ... read more

Greetings: 15 hours till we leave for airport, so this will begin our "blog". What a motley crew we've become. Mike cut his head, Linda has larengitis (spelling?), I have poison ivy and went to chiropractor today, and Shirley fell Monday and tore her rotator cuff. She is in pain and currently asleep. We have to begin packing, but we've been to ER and doctors Monday and Tuesday and therapy this morning. But as this is entitled, it is Alaska or bust. We are broken but not busted, so off we go. :) I will look for internet cafes to send blogs, but don't know how often I can find time. This should be a great adventure for all of us. Take care everyone and "talk" to you next from somewhere in Alaska. God bless... Bill ... read more

Greetings from Michigan: Four days til "lift off". :) Weather has turned cooler here. I suppose in preparation for Alaska. Front page of newspaper entertainment section today was about Mt. McKinley. Even more preparation and excitement. I have added a few more friends and family members to this blog, so let me know if you receive it. As mentioned to the early "beta testers", this is a travel blog that I learned about from a friend as she and her boyfriend traveled around part of the world on scuba diving adventures. Through them, I have been to Costa Rica and Australia, as well as other places I can't remember. Hopefully, I will be able to share some of our trip to Alaska with you. Have a great week and to paraphrase an old time kids tv ... read more

Hello family and friends: Here is another entry for testing and this time there is a picture included of the preparation process. :) It took a long time to get this, so you will be receiving more "tests" as the days go by, so I'll be ready for Alaska. Please post comments, so I know you're getting these tests. Love to all... Bill ... read more

We are 7 days away from leaving for Alaska. This trip has been on my "goal list" (or bucket list as it is now called) for 9 years. We are finally going. :) :) I am testing this blog and hope that you receive it. If all goes well, I will be able to send you pictures and commentary on some of the things we are doing and seeing. You can even respond to my "blogs". Well, let's see how (and if) this works for me. (A response would be good to add to this test.) God bless... Bill... read more
