During the day at Denali the clouds had gathered and as the train pulled away from the station it started to rain but a few miles down the track the sun was out all the way to Fairbanks. Friday morning we went on our own to the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The museum is world class with various exhibits of the First Nation People, the gold rush era, native animals and modern art. That afternoon our tour included a cruise aboard the sternwheeler Discovery Experience on the historic Chena and Tanana Rivers. Along the way we stopped at Trail Breaker Kennels, the home of the late Susan Butcher, the first female winner of the Ididarod. We then proceeded to the Chena Indian Village where Native guides provided an informative tour. Saturday morning our tour is treated to one of Alaska’s premier gold mining attractions, Gold Dredge No. 8. A video of actual footage of the dredge in action reveals of how the machine scooped up and separated gold from gravel. After an opportunity to pan for gold we enjoyed an all-you-can-eat miners lunch at the Dredge.
After a historical city tour of Fairbanks and a stop at the TransAlaskan pipeline we depart for Tok. Our route takes us south along the Richardson Highway to Delta Junction with a coffee stop at the historic Rika’s Roadhouse State Park. Rika’s is renowned up and down the highway for delicious pies and bear claws.
