Wednesday August 22, 2007 Today we were out of bed before 5:00 am to get ready to catch the shuttle bus by 6:00 am. The day was cloudy but it wasn’t raining. The shuttle buses take visitors into the park to see the scenery and wildlife, since private vehicles aren’t allowed passed mile 15 unless you are staying at Teklineka Campground at mile 32. Limiting the number of vehicles keeps the area more “natural” for animals. They are habituated to the buses and often come close to them. I appreciate not having to worry about driving a gravel road while trying to look for wildlife. Another advantage is you have more eyes looking for animals. I’m not a good spotter. The buses have about 60 seats (a nice school bus). and you make reservations for the ... read more

Tuesday August 21, 2007 This morning we started down the Denali Highway about 8:00 am. We drove to Savage River which is 15 miles into the park. Our plan was to walk a loop trail recommended in a book I have on Denali Hikes. This was a marked trail into the Savage River Canyon. Before we started charting our own path we wanted to get a feel for the area. It was cloudy and rained alittle as we drove the paved road. Didn’t see any wildlife on the way. The temperature was in the high 50’s. Only one car was parked at the trailhead (parking is always better early morning). It was not a problem finding the trail. As soon as we left the parking lot we saw Willow Ptarmigan. These birds look similar to a ... read more

Monday August 20, 2007 Denali Highway to Denali National Park The last 30 miles of the Denali Highway had some very bad parts and some pretty good parts. The terrain was rolling tundra with white spruce. The day was cloudy so at the Mt. McKinley viewpoint we were out of luck. We didn’t make many geology stops today, but we did have to turn around and recover some miles because we missed some folded rock. Never did find it. We were on the main highway to Denali by 11:00 am. We planned to spend one night out of the park with electricity and internet service so we could catch up on some things. After choosing a campground about 6 miles south of the park, we headed up to Denali. There is one site where you go ... read more

On our way to Denali we stopped at a Museum that was in a cabin from The 59ers. They were a group of homesteaders from Michigan that George remembers reading about when he was a teenager. Of course it caught the imagination of a teenage boy, so it was interesting for him to learn more about it many years later. We arrived in the Denali area and camped north of the park entrance at Denali RV Park. It is 20 minutes north of the busy touristy area known as Glitter Gulch. That’s where the cruise ships have hotels and there’s lots of pedestrians and traffic. Stop lights are unusual except is larger cities, but in Glitter Gulch there are 2 of them! The stop lights are on The Parks Highway. They and allow the pedestrians to ... read more

Well, today we had planned to fly out of Denali but @ 5:30 am we were awakened and told the weather was to bad to allow any flights so we had to get dressed, eat breakfast and be on the bus by 6:05am for the 5 hour bus drive out of Denali park. Not too happy about that but didn't want to risk bad weather flying in those tiny bush planes. The good part of the bus ride was that we were making a "restroom" stop and a very big grizzly bear decided it was time for him to visit the same restroom stop. He wandered around us for awhile then the bus driver moved the bus which caused the grizzly to move across the road and we could cautiously go about our business. We didn't ... read more

Final Night in Fairbanks North America » United States » Alaska » Denali By Lisa Ted and ChongJuly 5th 2007 Just when we thought we were done with all the adventures with our wonderful guests in Fairbanks, we scheduled one more day trip of a life time. Leaving the Fairbanks train depot at 8:00 a.m. we headed for Denali NP. The train ride was beautiful, complete with an open air observation deck and dining car. Once we arrived at the park we walked around the visitors center for about an hour. After this we were met by a helicopter outfitter how took us on a spectacular, 75 minute trip ... read more

Ok, so this was one of the things I was most looking forward to. We booked a flight to the 20 320' summit of Denali (Mt. McKinley), only to find out the girl who booked us had made a mistake and there was actually NO summit flight that day. We were pretty disappointed but when they offered us an enormous discount we accepted it, we were already there so why not? It was incredible. We toured all of the mountains surrounding McKinley, saw the Ruth Glacier and Don Sheldon Amphitheatre and the Kahiltna base camp (a few tents, no climbers in sight). I won't try to explain more, I'll just post the pics and that should do it :) We hung out in Talkeetna, about 150 miles N of Anchorage and just before the entrance ... read more

Hello all... recieved an email from Brian a few days ago and a very brief satellite phone call this morning. They ended up doing the hiking trip in Denali National Park rather than the Troublesome Creek state park hike they were originally planning. Apparently there were very few people and they were able to camp where they wanted. They had a couple of days amongst forested areas and then hiked above the tree line where they camped for a couple of nights on the side of a mountain. Spectacular views of the ranges and across to Alaska's highest peak Mt. McKinlay (not sure if that is spelt correctly). They saw grizzly bears, some with cubs - but all from a safe distance. Matty and himself were chased by an angry male cariboo who obviously saw such ... read more

So the reality of the cruise ending was a little harder for mumsy... but it still sucked having to go back to eating and sleeping cheaply!!! Anchorage was our first stop... this is the biggest city in Alaska and well to say the least we didnt really enjoy it.... we only stayed 2 nights and were off to Denali NP! Here wqe stayed in the cutest hostel right on the river... there was an awesome bunch of people there and the nights (that were not dark) were spent round a campfire or chatting to the groovy people staying there!!! The fact that it never got completley dark took a while to get use to... your body doesnt feel tired cause the sun is still shining at 11.30 at night???????????????????????? I had a phone call and an email from Brian a few days ago. They were well and in Anchorage after four days hiking in the Valdez area. Brian had found a 1904 gold coin from the gold rush days in Alaska! Quite a special find. Apparently it is worth about US$900! A lovely momento of their adventure... and not something he was thinking of selling! They were packing off and heading up to Denali State Park, north of Anchorage. There they were planning to do the Troubsome creek walk which my Lonely Planet Alaska book tells me is named that because of the bears that are along the way! It follows the creek past the "numerous black bears feeding on salmon" up to the treeline and then along a ridge with spectacular views of the ... read more
