Most people arrive in Denali by train or by bus. We took the McKinley Express north from Anchorage with a glass dome top and scenic views on both sides. Little chance to blog, but lots of time for reading, card playing, napping and picture taking, besides meeting and chatting up everybody in my car. As soon as I arrived at the lodge in Denali, it was time for my fly fishing adventure. Okay, so I wasn’t a pro, but I “got her done” as they say. They didn’t have a full body suit, so I settled for frog tog no camo waders. I don’t think it was a bad look…what do you think? My learning curve wasn’t too bad (mainly because we were on a skinny streambed and the casting was very short). I got the ... read more

Took the train to Denali en route to the Arctic. Gorgeous unspoiled terrain. No roads (except one, closed to private vehicles), no condos, no crap to obscure the scenery.... read more

Today we boarded the McKinley Explorer train for an all day ride to Denali. We had a large domed carriage which enabled us to experience the spectacular scenery all around us. I spent quite a bit of time on the exterior deck taking lots of photos of course. Early in the trip we passed the Elmendorf Airforce base which had lots of signs saying “no photos’....so who’s going to stop all us tourist on the train taking photos as you travel past ? Didn’t see what was so secret there anyway....lots of F22’s and Hercules parked there but that’s about all we could see – secret indeed ! We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the downstairs dining area of our carriage and then took in the rest of the beautiful scenery on the way to Denali. ... read more

This morning we break camp at Fox Run Campground, and head north about 200 miles to Denali and the Denali National Park. We found two spaces at the Denali Rainbow Village and RV Park in downtown Denali. We were backed into the rear side of the stores that lined the main drag of Denali, and were so close together you could hear the neighbors sneeze, but it was convenient to downtown shopping. Faith and Marcus went for a walk window shopping while I cooked a supper of country fried steak, rice, gravy, and green beans. Not much to do after eating seeing as it has turned rather cool and has started a light rain. Today, Monday, Faith and Marcus drove about 15 miles into Denali National Park, which is as for as you can take ... read more

Friday the 30th of July. Hello Wonderful People, Well today was a long one for us and I now sit in my tent at 10:30 at night typing today’s news onto a word sheet so I can copy & paste tomorrow in Prudhoe Bay ,……actually Deadhorse Alaska ……the Oil companies won’t allow us to get to Prudhoe unless we book 24 hours in advance and pay $45 each to be escorted the last 4 miles! Yup…..even 9/11 affected us here too! Anyway, we rode through the arctic circle again today and that’s become quite evident in the fact that the sun is still well above the horizon at 10:30pm. In fact I don’t think it’s going to bed tonight. En-route today we took a small detour to a town(?) called Wiseman. Try googling it if you ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well we made it to Prudhoe bay! it was a 238km ride north from our campground at Galbraith and wrist slittingly boring on that stretch of road. Deadhorse/Prudhoe looks like it belongs on the moon by the way and the wind blows dust devils through the area something fierce if you're on a bike. Anyway, after a $15 lunch at the Prudhoe Bay hotel we headed south and camped at Coldfoot for the night. At last we got to have a warm shower and bathrooms again! We slept like logs too after the mammoth day (630kms of dirt mixed with pavement) and headed south toward Fairbanks. My concern was the ever growing "ticking" noise that is now coming from the left hand cylinder of my bike (I think it's excessive endplay in the inlet ... read more

Slept in this morning. Got up went for a ride 15 miles into Denali to Savage River. Furtherest point you can drive your personal vehicle without a special camping permit. Took a two mile hike here and saw arctic ground squirrels, moose, and three ptarmigans(chickens :-). Bought our tickets for the shuttle bus ride into Denali tomorrow to Eilsen - 66 mile bus ride. On our way out we did see Mount McKinnely in the far distance. For dinner, Shelby T cooked smothered porkchops, rice & gravy, green beans, and biscuits.... read more

Temps - in 50s during the day and 40s at night. We headed out in the rain today towards Healy, AK. Had to stop for Jack's "Wal-Mart fix" before really hitting the road :-). We fueled up for what was a very boring ride in the rain and low overcast. Not a lot to see except low, very low clouds until we get close to Denali and then the views of the mountains were pretty. While at Wal-Mart we found that the Denali Rainbow RV Park was the only one with full hookups that had openings so that is where we are going. Got to the park, the views of the area around the RV park is really great, but would only recommend this park if full hookup was really necessary!! The park is a gravel ... read more

Haven’t heard from us for a couple days? Let me tell you, its because camping totally sucks in the rain! That , and the RV Park in Talkeetna we went to had RV’s side by side like LA traffic, right on top of each other. To make things worse (but really, the rain and crappy site was the downer), we couldn’t take our flight over Mt McKinley as the clouds prevented the wing and a prayer planes from flying - they only go on sight and vision had a 3’ distance. So we camped there, Juli looked for every out to a Hilton, but found the closest was in either Seattle or Vancouver, neither being a hop skip nor jump. She made it clear to all of us that she wasn’t really a camper (shocker), and ... read more

We got an awesome RV! It’s actually pretty big. Jaden and I get to sleep over the driver’s seat. Blaze sleeps on the pull-out coach. It’s really hard to sleep because it stays light for a really long time. People say that it will get dark at some point of day. So our dad tried to stay up until it gets dark but, he couldn’t stay awake past 11:30. When its 11:30 in Alaska it is 1:30am in Colorado. But even at 11:30 Alaska time, it was still light as day. So we don’t believe that it gets dark in the summer in Alaska. Alaska is 2 hours behind Colorado time. In the winter in Alaska it’s never really light. It’s only dim at noon. All the rest of the day it is pitch black. We ... read more
