Now I know why my parents have not put much on the travel blog. We arrived in Anchorage May 30th around 8:30p.m. and haven't stopped since! Alaska is beautiful. May 31st was Dad's birthday. We spent the day at the Anchorage Historical Society learning about native life in this area. No heated swimming pool for them! They say they stayed warm in thier comfy one room homes built for 30-40 people. Yeah, right. This is the smallest world I've ever been in! Before going to the museum, a man saw our Georgia tag and asked what part we were from. Come to find out they were from Folkston...Ronnie Murray and his wife (Becky Murray's in-laws)! After the museum, we went downtown to the Ship Creek bridge where we saw people along the banks and in ... read more

Friday May 11 We have been in Denali Park since Wednesday night. An extended visit was planned so as to celebrate one of the groups 44th birthday. And it was done in style. Wednesday we stopped at Costco and bought all kinds of food … small chocolate bars, crackers, socks, warm clothes, roast beef, milk, liquor, beer, potatoes, stewing beef, pasta, bread and more…enough for the next few days…. Had to come to Alaska to go shopping at Costco and Wal-Mart! Twenty three people eating well involves a lot of planning and food. My cook team ….Pablo, Sue, and me with Karen orchestrating …. put together a feast for Thursday. We had the birthday dinner a day early for two reasons … one we had all day to cook and two the liquor had to ... read more

UntitledAfter another fabulous breakfast with Mary, who now has 9 other guests. We head off to the airport with Jim and Lisa. Our expected tour over the Artic Circle and onto Coldfoot has to be abandoned explains Robert from the North Alaskan Tour Company on account of its snowing and visibility is down to 200 feet - a bit low for flying. Instead of going home our alternative destination could be a native village at Beaver on the Yukon River followed by a flight slightly north so we can cross the imaginary Artic Circle line and therefore attain our official certificates. We all agree, that included another couple from Utah and pilot Pete. Little planes can be a little daunting, we sit in the back seats so that our view is unobstructed by the wings, Lisa ... read more

It's day number... I don't really know but wake about 5am, Tuesday 8 May Ummm daylight. Des writes up the diary, wakes me and we join Mary for breakfast. Guests Jim and Lisa have arrived from Philadelphia. They decided to join us for the much anticipated (by Maree anyway) Artic Circle trip tomorrow. Breakhast is delicious but way too much... but should keep the fires buring until tea time. We wander downtown to the visitors centre where we are advised of local attractions and how to get there. After some discussion of possibilities we make a scramble back down a few blocks to the bus terminal -- our distination Fairbanks University where the museum is located. En route of notice apart from the thrid world look of the place (junk everywhere) is the piles of ... read more

I know most of you know that I am no longer in Alaska but I couldn't move on without a blog on Denali National Park. My sister, Sherry, my neice, Natalie, nephew, Brennen, Morgan and I visited Denali in July. Denali, "High One" named by the local Athabascan native Alaskans was formerly named McKinley National Park. It was renamed Denali by Carter in 1980. It is a 6 million acre sub-arctic park, larger than the state of Massachusetts. It remains mostly wild and unspoiled. Most surprising is how small the trees are. According to the park guides, the permafrost (the thin layer of topsoil that thaws each summer) leaves the spruce trees small and spindly. While the mountains are large the fauna is minature and dwarfed. Mt. McKinley is usually cloud-covered and rarely able to be ... read more

At 6 million plus acres, Denali National Park is huge -- bigger than the state of Massachusetts, and the terrain is magnificent, with enormous mountains, big rivers and many lakes. There is only one road, which extends about 75 miles into the park. Except for a few miles near the park entrance the road is gravel, and personal vehicles are only allowed on the first 14 or 15 miles. The public can only travel the rest of the road on a limited number of excursion busses. This leaves a whole lot of wilderness for the animals to roam in their natural habitat. The crown jewel of the park is Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. At over 20,000 feet it is half again as big as Pike's Peak. Because of its size it creates ... read more

A travelling day - from Denali National Park to Anchorage by bus. We then hired a car to drive down to Seward, a small-ish city (not even close to a city by our standards) by the sea in Resurrection Bay, on the Kenai Peninsula We did not turn up till about 6, so we got some food, pitched the tent and that was pretty much the day!... read more

Last day in Denali and only thing left to tick off our list was to walk up Mt Healey to get a good view of the park entrance and surrounding areas, we had heard that it was a good view and walk. We did the 2,000 ft ascent and descent in 2 hours. A little dazed and confused we then decided to walk the couple of miles into the commercial area for a meal and also to see where we had to walk tomorrow morning, early, to catch our bus. ...And that is all we really have to say about today.... read more

Today was a discovery day, with again an early bus out to mile 55.3 (the whole length of the one road in and out is 95 miles), where 11 of us were going to be dropped off. We had signed up for a hike with a Park ranger to get to learn more about Deanli, the surrounding area and the importance of the park. We met Cass, our ranger, who knew so much about the animals, flora and fauna, and history that we all were soon asking many questions just to tap into some of the knowledge. It did however impede on our progress and we only went up one ridge and pretty much back again in little over 4 hours - but what a ridge. From the top we had the most 'AWESOME' (Cass's word ... read more

Today we went exploring for wildlife on the shuttle bus system run by the park. It took us 5 hours going 35 mph (at best) to get to a place called Wonder Lake, a location perfect for viewing Mt McKinley, when you are lucky enough, she shows some of herself (ie not much)1 out of every 4 days. The early morning started out well with sightings of Dall sheep, moose, caribou and then a grizzly bear off in the distance. We even got a glimpse of the top of Mt McKinley. Something we have picked up on is that it is not very often in the summer months to see McKinley (or local name Denali, meaning "the high one"), as it has its own weather system, and what can be a nice day everywhere else, there ... read more
