Epilogue December 2010 The Marilsnick had made it; captain and crew were elated. There had been highlights and “lowlights” during our journey. The highlights were the 18-hour crossing of the Gulf of Mexico at night, the crossing of Lake Okeechobee, the endless but beautiful Intracoastal Waterway, my vacation onboard when Skip and Barb ran the boat, the entering of New York Harbor with my siblings, the vacation on land at the cottage of cousin Marianne Duenhoelter and the scenic wild Georgian Bay and Northern Channel, the camaraderie with other Loopers and finally returning to Dog River after having completed the Loop. The “lowlights” were the accident in St. Augustine at the Bridge of Lions and the two groundings. Problems, which I had to overcome were an unexplained weight loss of twenty pounds, which according to my ... read more

We got up this morning to cloudy skies, breezy, but still pretty warm. What happened to that cold front that was supposed to move in last night? While we were still drinking our morning coffee, the wind shifted, the temperature dropped and in came the front. Sara had been talking since yesterday about renting a tank and diving down to check out her propellar, but the weather was so nasty and the nearest dive shop 15 miles away. She and Trevor discussed and thought and finally decided it was worth the money to have the boat hauled out so they could thoroughly check for damage. It was scary and tricky moving the boat in the strong wind with poor handling, but they managed to get the boat over to the lift. Once the boat was out ... read more

It was most enjoyable to spend a night with our daughter and grand children and the next day, early morning off to New Johnsonville. It was a beautiful day for travelling. Everything was fine on Trusty III and the next day was a cleanup day. Nous avons quitté Pebble Isle Marina, le vendredi le 12 par un soleil radieux et des températures presque d’été et apprécié notre première journée de navigation sur la rivière Tennessee. Ce fut de courte durée et l’automne fait ... read more

Thursday, 25 November, 2010 Happy Thanksgiving to all. We are in Mobile, happily tied up at Grand Mariner Marina on the Dog River at the western edge of Mobile Bay. But I get ahead of myself. This morning we watched as Trevor and Sara wrestled a tree that had floated up against their boat. It had to be 25’ long and stuck out both sides of their boat and was against their anchor rope. The trip through the industrial and maritime sections of Mobile was not nearly as bad as it could have been. Since it was Thanksgiving morning, most everything was shut down, just a few tugs and tows were moving. I imagine that on a normal day, it can be pretty intimidating cruising in that area with all the big ships and tows. We ... read more

Wednesday, 24 November, 2010 We thought today would be another busy tow day, but we really only passed one on the river and a few have passed the bayou where we’re anchored. By the way, I’ve been told I need to explain tows. On inland waterways tug boats push barges filled with whatever and all strung together. On the Mississippi they may be 5 barges wide and 7 long, on the Tennessee they’re usually 3 wide and 5 long, but on the Tombigbee it appears they are up to 3 wide, but usually only 3 long, I guess due to the twisty nature of the river, as they are pretty awkward to turn. Anyway, the tugs and the barges together are called a tow, even though the tug pushes the barges not pulls. Is that clear ... read more

After the whirlwind few days in Louisiana, particularly New Orleans, the pace of our road trip slowed a little over the next couple of days as we took in the Gulf Coast, oil tainted waters and damage still visible from Hurricane Katrina. We left the Prat's farm late on Sunday afternoon, just as Spain were lifting the World Cup for the first time and drove south east towards the Louisiana Mississippi state line, skirting past the swamps and waterways we had visited on the swamp tour the day before. After an hour or so we said goodbye to The Pelican State after what had been a really memorable, touching and informative six days. The coast opened up ahead of us almost as soon as we arrived in Mississippi (The Magnolia State) as we travelled along the ... read more

Through His Eyes.Saturday, June 19. One of the CS members I asked to host who was unable to because he had a house full of ‘surfers’ wanted to meet when we were both in Mobile. So Saturday Ken stops by, picks me up, and we drive to downtown Mobile. This affords me a great opportunity to look around at the beautiful old historic homes. I almost get whip lash as I stare at one side of the road and then the other. We eat at a Mexican restaurant Ken suggests—fish tacos, ummm, and enjoy terrific conversation. After we head for the bay. He recommends the Museum of Mobile which is featuring a traveling exhibit of the life of George Washington Carver. Ken has seen it numerous times but he generously insists he doesn’t mind seeing it ... read more

Totally BusinessThursday, June 10. Devote the whole day to the Mobile 'investment' house. Various meetings. One with a stager, who, if you haven't heard about them, dress a house in furnishings to give it a warm, model-home look. Pretty popular right now when the market's so bad. Took more pictures of the house now that it's painted and boasting new window shades and a few new plants in the front. At first glance it doesn't look a lot different than it did before. It's the smell of smoke I have to get rid of. Another meeting with Realtor to sign the paperwork. A few more things to do (ducts must be cleaned and carpets scrubbed). If all goes well, house will go on the market on Monday. Well, the bad news is that after all that ... read more

Interesting day.Wednesday June 9. Drive to Medical Museum in Mobile this morning. Lots of interesting medical artifacts. Some of the amputation saws date back to the civil war. Shudder. For $4 I got a guided tour. What a deal. The museum is housed on the first floor of one of the oldest houses in Mobile, built in 1827. And it's right next to a park, part of the Univ of S AL Children and Women's Hospital, filled with incredible bronze statues. So after the tour, I wander around snapping pics of the art work and the house. Then I drive to the Botanical Gardens. Quiet and soothing. Lots of shade. Yesss. Azalea plants everywhere, but only a few azaleas left. It must be very colorful around April when the blooms are in season. Lots of areas ... read more

Churches everywhere you lookMonday, June 7th. Meetings and phone calls re house today so didn't really get to do much sightseeing. But I'm fascinated with the number and architectural variety of the churches here so while I’m running around I stop and shot three of them. Not very many when you consider there is one on every corner. I estimate there is about one church for every inhabitant in Mobile. Ha ha. Some are simple. Some are enormous, sprawling complexes. These three were within about a one-mile stretch.... read more
