Just being a touristSaturday, June 5. Today I don’t go near the house. Instead I drive to downtown Mobile and visit a 9-block historic section called De Tonti Square featuring homes from the mid 1800s. A bit further I park and meander about two-dozen blocks in sweltering 85-degree weather that must be almost 80% humidity. I am soaked after a few blocks. I think even my fingernails are sweating. But it is an interesting walk. Dilapidated buildings contrast with lovely parks and waterfalls, huge churches, small bed and breakfasts and large hotel chains. One thing that is fairly amusing is when I drove downtown, parking is sparse. So I drive into an almost empty lot and pay my $5 to the parking lot machine. On the very next block, not only is there plenty of street ... read more

Get ready. Get set. Go.Well, I'm at it again. But this time the travel is born of necessity. I need to sell a property in Mobile, AL. Don't know how long it will take to prepare the house so I've given myself 22 days between leaving and returning to LAX. How to pack for three weeks when you don't know what to expect or exactly what you'll be doing. Ah, the decisions. Lots of T shirts a few pair of pants as well as underwear and every pair of socks I have. The longer I can go without washing clothes the better I'll like it. But want to pack my computer and my Nikon Digital with two lenses so I end up taking a padded back pack for the electronics, and a separate back pack for ... read more

Oct 30 Day 13 Layover in Demopolis, AL We slept in and then did laundry this morning. It’s warm and muggy. The forecast for this afternoon is for thunder storms and a lot of rain. A good day to stay put. We were invited for cocktails on Sparkies Dream at 5:00 PM. We were joined by 2 additional Canadian couples who are cruising south. The Pinacoladas were great and a good time was had by all. We eat dinner at the New Orleans Bar and Grill located at the Marina. Critter Count: Hundreds of small ants made there way unto the boat. A whole string of them were found crawling up one of our mooring lines to find the good food aboard Amber Lee. Other boats had the same problem so a trip to town for ... read more

I begin back with some late summer and early fall travels. My seeing a new state and somewhat far-off literary landmarks are at a pause for now, but I have been to the following since August: Hilton Head Island, Savannah, the Virginia Highlands in Atlanta, the Florida Panhandle and Mobile, Alabama, plus another location of the music store chain that I briefly worked for during their busy season. All in all, I managed to come up with some material to put together a new entry. It is a new season and I welcome that fact, yet many a day comes when I longingly gaze at my atlas or wall maps. I probably shouldn’t even list the many places to which I’ve yet to make the venture, or the combinations of sights and cities that I must ... read more

Mobile and Dauphin Island - 7th-8th October We arrived in Mobile (pronounced Mobeel) a little after 4pm and headed towards the tourist information centre to get our bearings of local area. Mobile rests about 150 miles East of New Orleans on the Gulf Coast and we decided it would be a nice stop prior to heading to New Orleans itself. Upon arrival Mobile looked very much like an industrial city with ports and trains coming in and out on a regular basis. After speaking to the 2 friendly, elderly ladies in the tourist info who gave us lots of ideas of things to do, we then reserved our campsite 10 miles north of Mobile. We decided to check out a small island nearby known as Dauphin Island which the tourist ladies had said was a lovely ... read more

Oct 15 Day 6 Today we were able to get a ride on a spectator boat to watch the racing up close. The racers had a good wind and that made for a rough ride in the power boat we were in. I can hardly wait to get back on a sail boat. There was lots of excitement on the starting line; as you can see from the photos. When you have 30 boats starting it can get a little nuts. After the 3 races were done, our favorite boat, Peter Pan, was in 6th place overall. A nice day of racing. After the race we were invited to a dinner party hosted by one of the Club members on their patio. There were over 100 people at the party. Some more great generous Southern Hospitality. ... read more
