The university decides to stay at the Laredo - Texas side for insurance and security reason, but we are free to go to the Mexican side of the town - Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. All the vans are to stay at the hotel along Rio Grande, and we walked over the Friendship Bridge to Mexico. Just like that, we are in Mexico without even having our paperwork checked by the Mexican immigration and custom. The assignment is to observe different culture through landscape design projects in Mexico. Carrie, Sandy, Jason and I were paired up to walk around as a group, and we survived the day. We had our dinner at a small piazza tucked in somewhere and I guess it was bluntly obvious that we don’t look like Mexicans, as we hastily had to decline many ... read more

lovin it down here in cancun.... hit up the beaches, ate some bomb mexi-carribean food, and of course - explored the ancient temples of chichen itza. itz a bird... itz a plane... itz a chichen! umm, okay, nevermind. we thought one of the coolest things about chichen itza was how back in the ancient mayan times, the king would force his servants to play mayan basketball. the losers were executed, and the MVP was sacrificed - since it was an honor. so i guess your goal as a player was to be on the winning team but to not be the MVP. can you say samaki walker of the lakers? or will purdue of the bulls?... read more

Yes, I am now in Acapulco, Mexico. It is very much like Rio de Janeiro in many ways - sun, sand, beach volleyball, lifesavers, concerts on the beach...I love it! We are hoping to move to somewhere more tranquil and paradise-like soon, but are not sure where. We are doing the stupid thing of travelling without a guide book ( we were too stingy to buy one for only two weeks) so it is a challenge! Hoping to make friends with some nice backpackers with a Lonely Planet soon! Last night we went to a restaurant with a real life Manuel from “Fawlty Towers” (I apologise to those of you who are not British and have no idea what I am going on about!). It was uncanny though. He had everything - the black trousers and ... read more

North America » Mexico » Jalisco » Puerto Vallarta October 13th 2000

During my first job out of college, my company took us on an all expense paid release celebration to a resort in Puerto Vallarta. It is my first time in a resort, and my first time to Mexico... if you consider the areas around the resort to be Mexico! For one, it certainly wasn't much of a cultural experience since we stayed in the pool and hottub day in and out sipping margaritas. But it was a trip to remember! All 7 days of it that is. ... read more

A decade of travels around the globe “Nostalgia isn't quite what it used to be”.... 10 years. A decade. If only someone had told me back then how much there's to see... Flashback to Mexico City's airport, August 2000. We just landed, trying to find our way out of the enormous terminal, feeling utterly exhausted from the long flight. 24 hours ago we were celebrating the Queen’s Day in frenzy Amsterdam. "Excuse me sir"- I'm approaching an officer in uniforms. No answer. "Excuse me!"- I'm trying again with his partner. Still no reply. In the second attempt I'm starting to realize the bitter truth. No one speaks English here! Now how are we going to find a place to lay our heads? We rushed to the nearby public phone and tried the first hotel on our ... read more

17 Feb 2000 Hotel Continental, Juarez Crossed over to Mexico today for the first time and will probably do a bit of to-ing and fro-ing along the border. We crossed over to Mexico in a major dust storm, El Paso is a hole, but at least we now have all the relevant paper work and documentation to take our car into Mexico. The Americans are convinced we will be back as they can’t believe anyone would keep heading south around here. Mind you when I see how seedy El Paso and Juarez are I can understand why they may think that. Just ran into the same 12 year old boy escorting yet more fat American old men back to the room down the hallway in the Hotel Continental we are staying in on my way to ... read more

Myself, along with 5 good friends of mine head down to mexico for a night of partying. Not sure of the date as it was a long ass time ago. Anywho, take a taxi from the boarder to rosarito. 30 minutes later the taxi drops us near papas and bear and all the other hub bub. $10 all you can drink... have a great time. I end up having to babysit one of my friends as he drank way too much. hold him up so he can piss in the bathroom. it was ugly. Locals were friendly. the place seemed to have a great vibe. Although we were all quite drunk and happy ourselves. 2 of my friends end up getting in to it with some locals over something to do with the price of a ... read more
