Progresso, a beach front area about 25 min by car or about 40 min by Bus north of Merida is a location with apparently good seafood. I headed there with Pablo (our first Mexican/US friend). It is a sleepy place with lots of potential (Being a Monday, it was dead with a capital D!). img=http://image7.bubbleshare.com/media/00/22/de/4e/4cf3c5026a35c5239ac7f02b4ccbd86af699b0f5/580x435/Progresso1_580x435.jpg Perhaps it was the wrong time to go but the stark sunlight brought out a lanscape that gives the impression that the local council have not tapped into this in a focused way. There were some nice private beachfront bungalows but for a strange reason, they were empty and looked abandoned. We contemplated life over a bottle of cerveza under the shade of some beach huts and after another bought img=http://image5.bubbleshare.com/media/00/22/de/ac/9a22ae166fb1... read more

Flight that Richy booked on the internet in Spanish whilst in Canada was boarded without a hitch ... *phew*! Yet more surprises... Mexico City must have one of the nicest, efficient domestic terminals in the developing world... one and a half hours later, we landed to 40 degC, 80% humidity - significantly hotter than high Mexico City (or as San would say: "Wah lau! hot until can die.... walking hot, sleeping hot, eating hot... everything picante!" She takes about 3 to 4 showers a day just to try and cool off!). Merida, Yucatan is the land of Haciendas (Old manufacturing communes), Quaint streets, Siestas, heaps of Mayan ruins (including the grand ChiChen-Itza and the elegant Uxmal) and what Richy came for .... The Yucatan is HOT and comprises mostly marsh lands and jungle. Campeche is on the Gulf Coast which from an oceanic perspective is also as flat as a pancake (no waves). Two nights in Campeche / Edzna Ruins I stopped in the town of Campeche, as it shortened the bus trip and provided a base to see the Edzna ruins and also study some more local history. Campeche was an offensive / defensive outpost built and used by the Spanich. A sizeable militiary force was setup here complete with canons. The walls of the various fortresses are 2 to 3 metres thick. For me, however the highlight of Campeche was the Monkey Hostel where i met this Portuguese guy called Paulo, we got talking and ended up spending the next week traversing the Yucatan. The hostel ... read more

Having left the guys early in the morning to get back to Mexico in time to avoid spending the night in Chetumal I don´t really remember any of the journey (other than the fact that I slept for the whole way and always had lots of space on the bus...could have been because I smelt?!) Caught the bus to this tiny little remote town south of Tulum called Mahahual. Again, it is meant to be amazing to dive there as the reef has loads of wrecks which are easily dived. This is what I had planned to do but when I arrived I discovered that there were no hostels in the town...only a few expensive hotels or really shabby beach cabanas, which when you are on your own were still fairly expensive...anyway, so I decided that ... read more

Said goodbye to Cheryl at Tulum bus station, and while she headed to Playa del Carmen for a week with Mark, I headed to Merida.. planning for a week of culture and Spanish lessons and spending less money :) .. I did do a few hours of Spanish lessons with a teacher from CIS, and managed to fit in a bit of culture (well a couple of galleries, a museum if that counts!.. and there's lots of free events at the cultural centre here, so have been to watch a few random things.. such as a Belgian film with Spanish subtitles, and some traditional Catalan dancing! .. hmm a deserate way to try and fill time, or making the most of what's free.. i'm not sure!) BUT met lots of nice people, so spent most of ... read more

After Chichen Itza we went to the largest city up to now on our travels, Merida. It was a nice enough place and for me just a larger version of Valladolid but a bit cheaper which is always nice! The first day didn’t start to well as the bus dropped us off at a bus station not on the map, so took us a while to find our bearings and then even longer to find some accommodation because it fell on a weekend. After about 2 hours of walking around in similar heat you are getting at home but with a heavy back pack! In the end we got lucky and found a lovely place. It was an old colonial house, which from the outside looked nothing special, but in the center was a luscious green ... read more

We left Tulum and decided to go to Valladoloid so we could see Chitchen Itza and go check out some more cenotes. We arrived and found a really nice hostel although as it was a Hostelling International one it was a bit dry... Anyway, just as we were looking out the window we saw some English guys who we´d met in San Cristobal and Palenque, and it turned out that Henry A had actually worked with one of them (Ben) last summer which was pretty wierd but cool That evening we went for a few beers and a meal on the square but took it fairly easy as we were hoping to get up early to go to Chitchen Itza before the hoards of American day trippers from Cancun. We overslept so missed the first bus ... read more

No Photos?! Ok here's the deal: Internet here is slow. Not quite dialup, but slow. However, the good side is that an Internet Cafe down here consists of unrestricted access to any computer sitting on a desk or two. So... we have no problems plugging our camera in and loading pictures on to the computer, but it takes 8 years to upload them... and sometimes it just times out. So to keep everyone up to date, we're going to continue to publish blog entries, but pictures will only go up when we find a place with the bandwidth to do so. If and when we find such a place, we will do our best to go back and post pictures associated with entries that we've already published. Here's the link to all of our blog entries: ... read more

Bienvenido a México It's been said that no one believes in love at first sight more than the people of Mexico. Many travelers who sit on white-sand Caribbean beaches in the Yucatan feel that love. As do those who climb the steep Mayan pyramid steps or venture into the cool, lemon-lime hills of Chipas where 21st-century Maya embrace traditions that date back centuries. Both areas - sitting across the northern extremes of Central America - are convenient add-ons or gateway to a Central American journey. Intro to Cancun and Isla MujeresCancun In the Yucatan, the beach-resort mecca of Cancun is a major gateway to the region,... read more
