We left Tulum and decided to go to Valladoloid so we could see Chitchen Itza and go check out some more cenotes.

We arrived and found a really nice hostel although as it was a Hostelling International one it was a bit dry...

Anyway, just as we were looking out the window we saw some English guys who we´d met in San Cristobal and Palenque, and it turned out that Henry A had actually worked with one of them (Ben) last summer which was pretty wierd but cool

That evening we went for a few beers and a meal on the square but took it fairly easy as we were hoping to get up early to go to Chitchen Itza before the hoards of American day trippers from Cancun.

We overslept so missed the first bus but we managed to get a little collectivo van so got there at about 8 30. The ruins were fairly impressive and at first it was almost as if we had the place to ourselves.

Then, almost as if on cue, at 10 30 a wave of flabby white/pink skin surged through the site. We went to get something to

eat to try and have some respite but even in the cafe all the prices were in US$ and the food tasted exactly like Burger King. It is actually amazing how the Americans manage to colonise everywhere and make it like a little slice of America. The people trying to sell their various bits of tourist tat even quoted all prices in dollars as well!

We amused ourselves by taking photos of the fatties (see below!) and then quickly left.

We got another collectivo van back and decided that as we were both wearing our swimming trunks that we might as well stop off at these two cenotes that we had heard about. They were stunning, stalagtite filled caves that had holes in the roof where the sun shone through, illuminating the water beneath. Whilst there we met an English couple who told us all about Isla Holbox being amazing so we thought that we´d head there next...the only other thing to happen was Henry M´s near death experience...in the second cenote there was a platform at about 15 ft which you could jump off into the water. Clearly for pussies. Being the hardcore extreme mentalists that we

are we decided that we would up the ante and jump from the steps above it which was about 35ft. Henry A went first and launched himself into the water with no problems. Henry M however, slipped as he was climbing over the wet wooden railings...Although there was no real danger, for Henry A in the water it looked for a few seconds that he might fall onto the rocks below...which wouldn´t have been pretty.

Oh well, it was all ok in the end (Mum and Dad - thought you´d appreciate these types of stories, our experiences of Mexican jails to follow!!)

We then went back to town and met up with Ben, Effy, Julio and Jamie the guys from Oxford Brookes and spent the evening drinking beers and playing cards...

The next day we overslept so nearly missed our bus to Holbox - at the last minute Ben and Effy decided to join us so the four of us made our way to the island.

We´re not too sure when this happened but think it must have been during the drunken night swimming in Tulum!

Jumping Rocks, Jellyfish and Gaols
Much relieved to hear that Henry M is not lying smashed on the rocks below, and sorry that Henry A had an encounter with jellyfish (interesting that he didn't notice) and hoping that the gaol remains only a joke....! A noticable amount of oversleeping creeping in - obviously the hard life is getting to you both. Glad that you have teamed up with some others, perhaps temporarily, it's a small world. I suspect the culture has now been done and the sea beckons, far from any internet cafes..... xxx
