Must apologise for the delay. We are now in Belize but will write this entry about our last few days in Mexico. We left Playa Del Carmen on Sunday morning dosed up on Diacalm heading for Vallodalid. We arrived 3 and a half hours later to a torrential downpour that even had the locals hiding. After trekking through the labaryinth of side streets we arrived at the hostel we'd been planning to stay at, only to discover it was closed. Soaked to the bone, and beyond caring, we set up camp in the hotel next door. The next morning we managed to track down the elusive hostel owner - Antonio Negro Aguillar, an ex-baseball star from the 50's and 60's who now runs a sports shop and the cheapest hostel in town, with a sideline in ... read more

Hola from Mexico. After the 2 week epic entry from Jamaica, we are trying to keep these diary entries like our bowel movements - frequent!! We have been in Mexico for 3 days in probably the most touristy region in the country. We flew into Cancun airport, but because of recent hurricaine damage there, decided to head south to Playa del Carmen. 10 years ago it was a little fishing village but now is fast becoming an extension of Cancun. Sprawling resorts and back to back souvenier shops selling sombreros and maracas. Without having left the airport we somehow found ourselves unknowingly embroiled in a timeshare hustle, not realising what we´d got ourselves into until the following day. Nachdem wir nach der anstrengenden Pyramidenbesichtigung uns nachmittags mit Hoehlenbaden in einer Cenote erholt haben, besichtigen wir noch ein bisschen Valladolid, wo es allerdings nicht viel mehr gibt als eine seltsame Wahlveranstaltung einer Lokalpartei auf dem Hauptmarktplatz. Wahlpropaganda auf mexikanisch ist schon etwas anders: es wir auf einer Buehne stundenlang gesungen (sehr schrecklich laut) und in Entenkostuemen verkleindet herumgesprungen. Die Leute (ob sie wohl zukuenftige Waehler sind?) sitzen vor der Buehne und einige hoeren gespannt dem Spektakel zu, waehrend die Kinder lieber herumrennen und schreien. Nun ja!? In cobá erwartet uns am naechsten Tag die Reste eines Hochwassers, das auch vom Wind des Huracáns ausgeloest wurde. Mit dem Flugzeug geht es von Guadalajara nach Cancún, um die Lage nach dem Orkan zu checken. Und natuerlich um moeglichst rasch in den Sueden zu kommen, von wo aus nun die Reise in Centralamerika startet. Cancún ist recht schockierend, zumindest wenn man auf der Suche nach schoenen Straenden und Natur pur ist. Es ist eine voellig neue Stadt (30Jahre) und mit haesslichen Haeusern, viel Verkehr und wenig Charme versehen. Ich weiss nicht, wie die Straende an der Zona Hotelera, einer 17km langen Hotelmeile, vor dem Orkan im November waren, jetzt sind sie mehr als haesslich. Die Hotels sind zerstoert und alles erscheint wie eine Riesenbaustelle. Der Sand wurde von Sturm wegtransportiert, so dass nun Steine ueberall hervortreten, an denen man sich beim Baden verletzten wuerde.
