Hola Amigos, FRIDAY: Today, we went to Tulum, a site of Mayan ruins about 60 miles or so from our resort. We signed up for the "express" tour, which meant that we'd leave at about 7am and get back "a little after 1pm." At least, that's what the travel company's sales rep told us the previous day. We envisioned ourselves in a van cruising straight to Tulum, where we'd meet up with a guide, get the low-down on the place, swim a bit (Tulum is on the sea), dry off and grab a bit to eat and then come straight back home in the van. It didn't go down exactly like that. Here's the story... CC and I, and another couple jumped on a big tour bus at 650am. The bus drove south to another resort, ... read more

April 29, Wednesday Up and at it early enough to easily make my 8:15 dive appointment. I was excited as we were going to dive two places along the reef system, which is fairly close to shore here at Playa del Carmen. Helene, a pretty Danish girl, was my "Dive Mike" quide/dive buddy, and we chatted about where we've both camped in Denmark. We carried our gear about 1/2 block down to the beach, loaded up on the boat, and in about 10 minutes were at the dive location. This was about a 60 foot deep area, and we saw many turtles, stingrays, moray eels, spiny lobsters, and we were even followed VERY closely by a remora, the kind of fish that fasten on to sharks. It's full name is Shark Remora (Echeneis naucrates ) This ... read more

April 28, Tuesday I had picked up a brochure for BioMaya, a jungle adventure site just north of Bacalar, where the beautiful 7 shades of blue fresh water lagoon is located. Deb was a little disappointed that we didn’t get to try zip-lining while in Belize, and this place offered us the chance, with the added benefit of its being directly on the way to Playa del Carmen. We pulled in to the site and were greeted by an employee with a surprised look on his face. Come to find out they didn’t expect to see anyone, as all the holidays are over in Mexico, and this was early in the middle of the week. They easily could have told us they were closed, but instead they went all out to make us feel welcome and ... read more

Well, I have just returned from my first all inclusive Mexico holiday. Wow, what a treat! Camille and I decided to celebrate her upcoming divorce in the best way we knew how - fun and sun! Se we headed to Cancun/Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Before we left, we spent about a month looking at different all inclusive sites. We knew we wanted to have a place that had 24 room service, all inclusive, and waiter service on the beach. A week before leaving, we found the Valentin Imperial Maya resort that met all of our requirements and then some. It was an adult only place, which suited us more than fine to not have children running everywhere. It was a bit of a couples style resort, but we did not mind, because the cliente were more ... read more

We’ve acquired some pretty handy travel skills in the last year, the most well-honed and particularly important ones being: 1) packing; 2) bartering; 3) getting along with each other on travel days (the most fight-worthy day of them all). A close fourth would be our ability to find cheap(er) flights. It was a cheaper flight that led us through South Africa (rather than Australia) on the way to Argentina, and it was also the reason we spent four days in Bogota, Colombia - simply a cheaper option than flying directly from Lima to Cancun. But really, our little layover in Bogota was a blip on the radar, and we don't have much to report since we hardly saw the city. It was raining, somewhat dangerous (a mugging a day took place outside our hostel) and we ... read more

Only an abreviated blog this time. Silence (in blog terms at least) due to lack of access to useful internet facilities, so even the photos are only from two of the four countries we saw - Mexico and Belize will have to wait til we arrive in Aus, only a few days from now. Central America was (except for non-Cancun Mexico) surprisingly expensive and quite over-populated with vendors who wanted to (a) be your next best friend and (b) sell something to you that really you did not need. We resisted their overtures poltely but firmly, becoming quite adept at not even pausing when approached, an act that feels impolite but was necessary if any progress was to be made on our walkabouts......... The trip here has been markedly different to the truck-based travel in South ... read more

Saturday, February 28th, the fifth anniversary of my retirement. (Actually, I retired on Leap Year Day 2004.) Before we left Cancun’ Mecoloco’s RV Park on the 25th, Furgie posed for pictures and we spent some time with Laura and her rescued kitties. Laura who will be 15 in two months began rescuing cats about two years ago. It was heart warming to watch her with her cats. As Laura seemed to speak no English I communicated with her mother. There are, I understand, thirty-seven at this time. They all have names. Only the chicas (girls) have had operations. The chicos (boys) don’t fight because they are all well loved and cared for. Laura mostly pays for her chica’s surgery by volunteering at a local veterinarian office. Female spaying only costs 150 pesos (about $11.00 dollars) here. ... read more

Well, our Caravan bus tour of ruins in the Yucatan is already over. Hard to believe. We would recommend this tour to anyone. It was well planned, well run, and our tour guide, Pepe, was very knowledgeable. We are looking forward to relaxing on a white sand beach though, as we have been on the go for the past 8 days. So, what can I say about Playa? It is packed full of drunks, wide-eyed tourists, rude people, loud music at each store and restaurant, all competing to out-blare the next. Vendors, hucksters, police, whooping and hollering, yelling, drums, horns......you get the idea. Oh yes, everyone seems to smoke - and lots of stinky cigars everywhere. You can't get away from it. Food smells, both good and bad. Everything is overpriced. No bargains to be had ... read more
