So I know I said this would be a food type blog... ‘girl v food’ an homage to the fabulous Adam Richman! And I’ve been diligently photographing everything that has passed my lips; however that was before I got to Playa del Carmen, Mexico and started diving and more specifically started diving the Cenotes. Any thought of food had to take a back seat when the cenotes came to town... or rather, when I came to their town! For those not in the know, let me explain what a cenote is: The word Cenote comes from the Mayan meaning ‘well’. It is a deep natural hole (or sink hole) created by the collapse of surface limestone exposing ground water underneath. These underground ‘rivers’ are all interconnected, or so it is believed. There are many unexplored areas ... read more

I figured this was a good place to post my recent published article for the Work & Family Foundation Canada, a fabulous organization that I write articles for about family, marriage, children and life in general. This one is on "Why Family Vacations are Important". (I have other posts on there, so feel free to toggle to older posts to see them) Having enjoyed our Mexico vacation this summer along with a fabulous getaway to Cindy & Gord's cottage, it made me realize how these vacations add so much richness to all areas of our lives. (including all those crazy things that happen to us along the way!) Click below to read it! Love your feedback! We're home and I think we'll need a withdrawal support group for tropical vacationers. It was odd looking out the window and not seeing the ocean. We said our good-byes to all the staff at Luna & had a final margarita with Luis! We tipped them all, and said a big goodbye to the security staff who I made lunch & brought dinner to on a regular basis since it's a long shift keeping the complex quiet and peaceful. Odin was sad to see us go; we gave him all our leftover food & a big tip, so he was pretty happy about that. What an absolute fine human being. Works 7 days a week there & has a family too. Cancun Airport was really quiet and no lineups for our flight to TO. Overall it ... read more

Unbeknownst to us, "someone" had a little fun with our camera the last day in Playa (after being warned not to use it). If we had to give a police description, we'd say oh someone around 4 feet tall, 45 pounds & who was acting rather suspicious...And if that stumped the Keystone cops, they could just use the folllowing pics to catch their suspect. If you see this little person who said they NEVER used our camera (pinkie promise), please report them to the authorities. All treats and dessert will be withheld (She did confess & we had a laugh over the series of photos she took when no one was looking.) This is what you get when you mix the Foran/Bennett, Robuskys/Davies together! (And oh her godparents Keith & Danielle probably have something to do ... read more

Before I forget, I wanted to make sure I posted about Martha's annual deep sea fishing trip with her buddies, Captain Bartolo, and first mate Gilberto. They left at 7 am & they put out five lines to see what they could catch. They trolled for about four hours and she succeeded or was very lucky in catching a 20 kg sailfish (it's quite the magnificent looking thing!) Note the top of the fish which is known as it's sail or fin which is amazing to look at. Normally kept folded when swimming, but the "sail" iwill be raised when it feels threatened or excited. Just so you know, the sailfish was a catch and release and was not hurt in any way. Marth also caught a mackeral that weighed approx. 10 pounds or so. She ... read more

Life wastes itself whilst we are preparing to live. Ralph Waldo Emerson Good morning everybody! I am lying on my oceanfront lounger, coffee in hand, and laptop on my lap typing you my blog. We are enjoying our last few days here. To say we don't want to go home is an under-understatement but one cannot be too greedy right?! I think summering on the shores of the Caribbean here or around Playa will be a yearly thing for us. Great fun, great food, R&R, culture and all around A plus experiences we've had. There are private oceanfront homes in Akumal that would be worth considering where it's very quiet and you are one with nature but close to all the amenities of Playa. Yesterday as you know by now from the videos we uploaded was ... read more

"Every good-bye makes the next hello closer". Well, it's our 14th day here and almost time to say good-bye. Al & I considered staying on after Marth offered to take the girls home; it would be our first vacation alone in years and years and well did I say years? I rubbed my hands in glee till well...till the reality hit that I just could not do that. (No matter how things fell into place to stay). Duty calls. And I thank MJ for offering. A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do and that's taking her kids home. It's all good though. We've had a rocking vacation from A-Z. Home will be a welcome thing when our feet hit inside the front door. "No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he ... read more

This video was captured by the guide today on Al and Lara's dive. And YES this is Lara and her dad swimming with whale sharks. They volunteered to be the first in the water. (Keep in mind there are hundreds of boats nearby with tourists waiting to be the first in the water!) Lara who just turned 13 and was ready, willing and excited to be swimming next to these beautiful creatures. This is as safe as swimming with dolphins despite the whale sharks size. We are always on the ball with our children's safety and this had no risk attached to it at all. (Read further blogs to see our comments) To say we are impressed with Lara is an understatement. She kept up with swimming with her dad who is a seasoned swimmer but ... read more

Yes this is Lara & Al video taped with whale sharks! While it may seem scary to hear Al & Lara swam with whale "sharks" they aren't the great white shark or anywhere near a preditory creature at all. In fact they don't really have teeth, or rather they are so small because they have no need for them since they filter feed on small krill. They are gentle giants and the biggest fish in the sea. It's the "high point" for seasoned divers, to see a whale shark which is a gift for so many people who know and love the whale shark. So for Al and Lara to see them was an unforgettable amazing adventure. The truth is the whale shark is more tame than a neighborhood dog you aren't familiar with. Take a ... read more

Well I have to say, HOLY SCHMOLIE what a glorious "Domingo" (Sunday) spent at Yal-Ku Lagoon today in Akumal. Yal-Ku is a beautiful tranquil serene environment where you can snorkel and swim with diverse marine life in a calm water environment. We arranged a van last minute and after a 45 minute drive we pulled into the small hidden lagoon by 11 am. The true definition of a lagoon is a shallow body of water, especially one separated from a sea by sandbars or coral reefs. Yal Ku is the crown jewel of Akumal, as Half Moon Bay collects more tourists with its free snorkeling and beach bars etc. This is more off the beaten path and there is an entrance fee to enter the lagoon; as it should be to continue to presever this beautiful ... read more
