Mexico: Cancun / Isla Mujeres Erstes Ziel ist also Cancun, ... read more

Blogger Bec After making a deal in order to get a raspberry yoghurt Magnum without having to get off the couch, you all have to put up with my ramblings on the blog for the next 3 entries! ( I also had to do the washing up AND buy Dougo a beer, plus open it AND curtsey!!!) Though, admittedly, I haven't been pulling my respective blogging weight so I guess I better have a crack. The weather hasn't been great over the past few days, overcast and very windy so we've mostly been mooching around the shops of downtown Cancun, god help us this place is a hole, or having complete meltdowns over my ipod deciding to cark it. We have managed to leave the hostel for one excursion - to the little island of Isla ... read more

i dont have anything to report really. we're on isla mujeres. we came across with a girl from the netherlands anda girl from venezuela. brendan has been hangin out with them driving around the island, but as for me, i'm just kind of kicking back and doing my own thing. its been nice so far. very warm and our hostel is right ona beach. they have a beach bar that opens at 11pm. after a nap yesterday i went for a few drinks, but i couldnt really get into it. i suppose i'm not a huge beach guy maybe. though i do thoughoughly enjoy the hammocks. even more so if they are in the shade. not that it really matters, as my sunscreen could save me from a nuclear explosion. only been burnt once. good for ... read more

Anywhere with a zona hotelera should be avoided, unless Disneyland is your second favourite place on earth. Saturated with Burger Kings, Starbucks and all things American, including the language, I was confused as to where I was. It's true I wasn't in Central America, Mexico is in fact part of North America, but it's also definitely a different country. Mexico definitely has a different language, a distinct culture, a Mayan history and indigenous people. Didn't it? Doesn't it? So, we quickly left Cancun, but not before spending a couple of hours fighting with hotel security to get onto the beach, to then fight with the "lifeguard" for some shade, which was more of a priority for him than actually saving a drowning man, who he was unaware of until we insited he get in the water ... read more

Romance on Isla de Mujeres. Romance filled the air as Jim, Mindy, our grandson Kalin and I disembarked from the high speed jet boat to the sandy beach of this tiny island off the coast of Cancun. We were suddenly thrust into a time warp where life was slow and easy. Colors so vibrant and glorious greeted us at every turn. We made out way through the busy waterfront street at a snails pace navigating with rudimentary Spanish. Actually Jim’s Spanish was pretty good. A clunky cab bounced up the gravel street to the hotel with its open door which let straight through the lobby to the Caribbean Sea. A cool breeze chilled our hot sweaty bodies as we entered. Forty or so of Matt and Jenny’s friends and family arrived at different times over the ... read more

It took just 2 hours to reach Playa Del Carmen from Tulum and the mini bus or collectivo as we call it here was a short and comfortable ride. I had arranged to meet my Mexican friend , Arlette from Durango and spend two days hanging out in Playa Del Carmen. Arlette had a friend who owned a hotel with a beach front and accomodation was complimentary which was great. Playa Del Carmen is a very touristy location. Nonetheless I found it to be far more pleasant compared to Puerto Vallarta and Cancun ( passed through Cancun on the way to Playa DC) Everything was organised, clean and looked pretty. The only thing that you could not run away from were touts engaging you every inch along the walkway trying to sell you something which got ... read more

Tuesday: back in Cancun after the bus ride from Holbox. Would like to push on south to the beachesruinsdiving at Tulum. However I am waiting for a credit card to be delivered to my Cancun hostel from England by Thursday. Rather than spend the evening in Cancun, I opted to go straight over to the little island of Isla Mujeures, a short ferry ride away. Picked out Poc Na Hostel from the Lonely Planet and decided to break out the tent for the first time this trip. The eveving´s entertainment at the hostel was very good: a guy with a Korg and a drummer sidekick were excellent - even recorded some of his stuff on my camera. Got chatting to some french travellers and decided to hook up for cycling the following day. In the morning ... read more

Our first stop: Isla Mujeres: (island of women) We are staying in a really nice and funky hostel on the beach (Poc Na) on this very backpacker island (plenty of Americans during the day too although most just come over for the day from the Cancun resorts)....very colourful houses and the backpackers we´ve met are much more international than in Cancun. Most are also surprised to hear we actually spent two nights in Cancun..most have come here straight from the airport, or are just ending their trip here...and don´t spend a night in Cancun at all. Our first full day was planned out carefully, breakfast, and a full day at the beach..(yes again). We still can´t really believe how clear the water is and how idyllic everything looks (see pictures...sorry, next time we will have pictures ... read more

Hello everyone, Not that much to say, as we have been holidaying. We arrived in Mexico and went to Tulum, where we met Monica and Joe from England, who were very lovely. We stayed with them for the whole time we were there and had lots of fun. Tulum is lovely and has the most amazing torquise waters that you could ever see, and very stunning beaches. The people on the beaches were very beach savvy, which Lo and I werent, by any stretch of the imagination. But we soon got used to the beach way of life.. doing nothing but bathe in the sun or the sea! And having sneaky cocktails! We managed to do as little activity as possible.. we did go and see some ruins, but that was only because they were right ... read more
