Blog stuff: After a few months back in Mexico, I've learned a few new things! I decided to come back due to my having to leave Colombia for 6 months, to learn more about the country and it's history and to learn some more about colloquial Mexican Spanish now that I have far better Spanish than I did when I left 2 years ago. Some new expressions I've encountered include "Como el tigre de Santa Julia". This is used to describe a situation in which someone is caught in some kind of unfortunate situation whilst sitting on the toilet. The story of the origin of this idiom is an amusing one; it goes that there was a bandit who robbed from the rich and was very difficult to capture. He was known as the Tiger of ... read more

I arrived early to the Cathedral in the morning and waited to meet Martha and Ivan again for breakfast. There was a friendly Spanish and English teacher and tour guide who came to speak with me while I waited. He asked if I was German, as most foreigners in Puebla were German as there was a large Volkswagen factory in Puebla. We spoke for a while and he introduced his student to me so she could practice English. Martha and Ivan arrived soon after. They took me to one of their favourite spots, a local Puebla restaurant that specialises in roasted meat. They first brought out a hot broth, with a tray of toppings to add to the soup including chili, onion and chickpeas, and served a fresh fruit juice on the side. For the main ... read more

An early walk took me to the bus station before my five hour bus journey to Puebla. I had a window seat fortunately so had a great view of Oaxaca as we climbed the surrounding hills towards Puebla. For the remainder of the trip I was fortunate to be able to take in the mountain views and see the desert nature, birds, eagles and cacti. There were valleys full with forests of cacti as far as you could see, with the road running through the mountains. I was happy that the roads were good, as it meant the journey to Puebla would be fairly quick. We arrived in Puebla around 2pm. There was a large volcano acting as a backdrop to the city, although it wasn’t clearly visible due to smog and pollution, which was unfortunate. ... read more

We crossed the dangerous (no wall but a fence) border at Nogales. This has to be one of the easiest crossings. You just drive past the American huts, along the two lane highway, get waved over have a quick chat with the Mexican guard and off you go. You stop at Km 21 where you get your vehicle import sticker (TIP) and your six month tourist card. Or not, in the case of one couple we met at San Carlos who forgot to stop and had to drive all the way back! When you meet up with other travellers it is always fun to chat and exchange a few “Crossing the border” stories. Most of us have had some sort of hassle, mainly from the US because they just don’t appear to know the rules or ... read more

Making our return to British Columbia we left Oaxaca RV Park after a lovely 3 day stay and took the Auto pista to Pueblo. A beautiful drive high over the mountain passes with excellent road surfaces, a little pricey on Tolls . Found an empty lot beside a Pemmex behind a restaurant that blocked the freeway noise with even a yard for the dogs to run. The price was right Free and the owners a delight. This is Mexico very friendly. Leaving very early try to get through Guadalajara , on the bypass route and as close to Tepic on the west coast as possible. well did that not change in a hurry when we had such a perfect morning traveled through Puebla with ease , the bypass of Mexico city watching the compass to make ... read more

Took a Taxi to the City of Pueblo and what a beautiful place it is. Founded in 1575 The lovely Cathedral took 200 years to build. It has 50 angels protecting it from the electrical storm that are very common in the rainy season. There are over 200 historical buildings in the downtown area. Fuerte de Loreto where the 1st battle was in 1862, the french battle with Dueglo and a church built on top of a pyramid. A must see for anyone passing through these parts.... read more

Ok so now there is delaying something and then there is this. Its now over 1 1/2 years since we came back and I finally sit down to write this. Main driver is that I got around to starting the photo books for the trip. Talk about procrastinating... Anyway here is my recollection of what happened Puebla Nice town, colonial buildings and loads of churches. You get the picture. This time its surrounded by a large city. We only stayed 2 nights but we had a good time enjoying the local food, wandering around the cities and admiring the soldiers with their vehicle mounted machine guns. Wait what? Yes this is also Mexico. A couple of days before we arrived there were large protests and some looting over the most important pressing issue that this world ... read more

December was my last month in Mexico. Just like every other country I've lived in, people started asking about when I am leaving to make sure that we can meet up one last time before I fly. I've heard "cuando te vas?" About two dozen times in the last month, and because Mexican people always leave everything to the last minute, it's made for a busy December! December started with a family party and a big bar crawl. The family party was a birthday bash, and featured a mariachi band, karaoke, salsa dancing, food, and conversation. It was great fun, despite it being a Tuesday, the party finished at 3am. My host father used his restaurant to host the party, and served delicious porzole to mark the occasion. Porzole is soup comprised of a type of ... read more

I've been walking a lot for the last 6 months, and have lost 18kgs of bodyweight. I've been curious to see the impact on my fitness, and so November began with a big run to Altepexi; a small town about 20km from my house. This is the biggest run I've ever done, and I was proud to finish it! Lunch and a beer followed the run, which took almost exactly 3 hours. I felt surprisingly good after it, although I was a tad sunburned! I'm still very much an incipient runner, but I'd like to improve my fitness enough to run a really large distance in the future. The afternoon after the run, I was in Zocalo watching some people dressed in tribal garb participating in a ritual dance for Day of the Dead. It was ... read more
