Monte Alban, one of the most spectucular ruined cities among Mesoamerica, is located just outside of Oaxaca City. We took at bus from a local hotel in Oaxaca City with many other tourists, which was the most economical way. It was a 20 minute ride up and over the mountains on a one-lane curvy road. We are still not sure how other buses passed us coming from the other direction. Upon arrival to Monte Alban around 10:00 a.m.the fog was quite thick, but little by little the fog lifted and the sky opened up a bit. We were lucky that we started as early as we did because by the time we finished around 12:30 p.m. there was a severe downpour of rain. Monte Alban was known in ancient times by its Zapotec name, Danni ... read more

Day 30 - Saturday 23 June 2007 - Oacaxa and Monte Alban Today we took a short bus trip to the ruins site of Monte Alban. The bus trip took us up quite high and past a lot of local mexican homes. The homes outside of the actual towns seem to be fairly basic. Some are even just basic walls, no flooring and sheet metal for a roof. They are also packed in together tightly. I´ve attached a pic, so hopefully you get some idea. Monte Alban began around 500 BC through 800 AD, but I don´t think anyone one actually knows why it was abandoned. It was the capital of the Zapotecs. There are 12 sites within the area and we had a local tour guide taking us around them for about 2 hours. ... read more

Oaxaca City (again). I am back here now so that K&N could see this beautifully colonial city which stands 1200m above sea level so it´s fairly temperate (33 degC), I was more than happy to show them around and had omitted stuff on my last stay so we could all do it together. Like mountain biking!! Our hostel rents top notch ones for 120 pesos (div 10, div 2 so 6 GBP) per day, I think its a a great way to look around a city, our trip took us in a circuit of OC and also to the Monte Alban ruins. Monte Alban is a mixture of Zapotec (AD 300) and Mixtec (AD 1200) before being conquored by the Aztecs (AD 1600) ruins atop of a 400m mountain, it´s the kinda ruins you see ... read more

First to the Thursday market in Etla, a fraction of the Tlacolula market, but delightful, with the most beautiful local vegetables and fruit, and pottery. Then the entire afternoon on the mesa of Monte Albán, one of Mesoamerica's most incredible Zapotec ruins. Words and even the images don't do it justice; the expansive space and massive structures are stunning rock constructions, perched on the top of a mountain that dominates the valley below. It exhudes a power and a mystery, 'facts' are few, and even they are open to dispute. A thunder storm was moving in from the west, adding to the drama.... read more

I learned many things in my visit to Mexico City. First, it is far from Oaxaca by car- six or seven hours. It is the same drive time as from Los Angeles to Berkely. I heard the story about the geography of Mexico. It is said that when ... read more

I am in the midst of a revolution. La Senora knocked on my door. This is unusual. It is ten to eight. Breakfast is at eight. At the same time my phone beeps. A text message has arrived. It is from the teacher. ÄVOID THE STRIKE AREA. MAESTROS ARE BEING EVICTED, TEAR GAS, BILLY CLUBS, ETC. THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BE CURIOUS! Since I arrived three weeks ago the maestros have been protesting and demonstrating by camping out in the main town square, the Zocalo. Their plastic eggshell blue tarps clog the streets, the thin ropes they use to hold up their tents stretch like spider webs across the streets. Walking down what is normally a wide open avenue is now like dodging laser alarms in a Tom Cruise action-adventure movie. So far, the ... read more

Friends, On Sunday we went to Monte Alban one of the most impressive and important archeological sites of Mesoamerica. We were fortunate enough to have a very knowledgeable guide in don Pedro lead our tour as he provided the different schools of thought about Monte Alban's ruins and their purpose for the ancestors of Oaxaca's present day Zapotecs. What is clear is that Monte Alban was unearthed by Mexican archeologist Alfonso Caso in the 1930s and that the ancient city was founded about 500 b.c. where they raised monumental platforms, pyramids, palaces, and a ceremonial ball court. Its present day name implies white mountain as it is atop a hill above the Oaxaca Valley and the reason the natives decided to build there can probably be attributed to it stategic location overlooking the valley. Whether or ... read more
