We toured around a bit outside the city today. First stop was the ruins of the Zapotepec capital at Monte Alban. It was occupied between approximately 500 BC to 700 AD. It is located on a hilltop that affords excellent views overlooking the three valleys that connect to form Oaxaca City. The ruins reminded me very much of the Mayan ruins at Copan, Honduras because of the layout of the city and the ruins themselves; not so much at all of the Mayan ruins at Tikal, Guatemala though. I wonder why. Maybe have to do a bit of research when I get time on whether there was any connection between the Zapotepec and the Maya but still, Copan is much further south than Tikal so it's hard to explain. Maybe it's just me and the ruins ... read more

The days that we spent in Oaxaca were, for the most part, very leisurely. This beautiful colonial town is perfect for long strolls, with its Spanish colonial architecture, broad plazas, ancient churches, and delectable food. It feels that there is an equal part traveller or Spanish student for every native Mexican here. As many people are here studying in language schools, it is easy to find people who will converse with you solely in Spanish. So I had lots of opportunities to practice. Oaxaca is also a central location for artists in this area, and many boutiques along the pedestrian drag show this off. It is easy to take a bus to Monte Alban. There are many companies offering the service. It took us some time to find the one I had read about in the ... read more

Got the bus to Oaxaca (pronounced O-ha-ca) early in the morning. Bus journey was alright as had a good chat with Laura and tried to learn Spanish. Finding it pretty difficult! The hotel was gorgeous with plants and birds everywhere and one particularly noisy parrot! We went into the town and wandered around. Again lots of markets to look and and so much activities going on in the town. To be cultured myself and Laura went to visit a few more churches! after which we treated ourselves to some beers on the terrace with the others in the hotel. We went into town and had dinner on the streets which watching a Mexican band play and the locals dancing. Its amazing how much they all love dancing here! We got up early and got on a ... read more

I only had 2 days in Oaxaca which made the morning lost in locating my day bag left somewhere the night before and the hostels padlock that had gone awol. Having found the bag and bought a replacement padlock I spent the remainder of the day visiting the ruins of Monte Alban. Like, Teotihuacan, not that much is known about it but it's glory days were between AD 450 and AD 600. It sits 400m up a steep mountain and overlooks the valley that hems in Oaxaca City. Much smaller (pop of 30K at peak compared to Ts 250K pop), younger and less deadly than Teotihuacan , Monte Alban also attracts many fewer tourists. There are signs that tell you what the buildings might have looked like and their purpose, but you end up just appreciating ... read more

Today we all got up bright and early, even though it was Domingo (Sunday) and headed off to our first ruins. My Mexican mother stuffed me with food once again, fresh fruit, pan (sweet bread), cereal (frosted flakes this time), mango juice and a fresh Oaxacan cheese and avocado tortilla. How does one explain in Spanish that a big breakfast to me is yogurt and granola? I met up with Christina and Chelsea at Chedraoiu (the local version of Canadian Superstore) and walked the 30 minutes to our meeting spot, just south of Santa Domingo. Being early (that’s right, early!) we went to find coffee at Mexico’s Starbucks, The Italian Coffee Company. The group congregated and chatted about cell phone conquests and mishaps from the previous day and then loaded onto the coach (a white Mercedes, ... read more

I´ve escaped!!!! (Hahaha not really!) We have a super dooper mega long weekend this week thanks to the Dia del Niños (yesterday), Dia del Trajabo (today), a random day to bridge the gap (tomorrow) and it being the 5th of May on Monday...almost as special in Mexico as the 16th Spetember as I can gather. Unfortunately the Battle of Puebla sounds so boring I haven´t had the will power to read up about it and find out exactly WHY we have this fantastic spate of holidays. On Tuesday the Dia del Niño celebrations in the camp were fantastic. It was all kicked off with an entertainer playing games with the children, a sack race and one where they had to tie a balloon to their ankle and the last one with their balloon intact won. I ... read more

Feeling a little tired from last night's cocktails, we had a 8.30am start. We visited the Monte Alban ruins until lunch time and then it was relaxation time. I'm a little pyramid'd out so I'm going to throttle back on the optional tours of ruins.... read more
