Hola! I am switching gears and have moved from China to Mexico, a place I feel much more comfortable with since I speak some Spanish. I have always wanted to attend a Spanish language immersion program but have never had the opportunity. Usually the programs are multiple weeks in length and that just didn’t fit into my home or work schedule. Fortunately for me a group of California Diabetes Educators put together this language school trip, specifically to improve medical Spanish skills. I am departing Phoenix in just a little while on my way to Mexico City, then Cuernavaca, a city with several language schools. Our program consists of six hours a day of Spanish, three that are conversational Spanish and three that are diabetes specific. They are breaking us down into small groups so we ... read more

These past three months have been wonderful, yet quite an emotional struggle for me here in Mexico. In February, the other volunteers and I went on a week long immersion trip to the US-Mexico border. The emotional impact of that trip was the main reason why I haven’t been able to bring myself to write you all for so long. How do I share the reality, the pain and suffering, and somehow even the hope we found along the way? How do I even know what to say - when I myself have never, and will never be able to fully comprehend what it truly means to be a Mexican or Central American migrant? In the end, the only thing I could think to do was to share a few stories. Here in Mexico, everyone has ... read more

Well, a welcomed break came in the middle of February and I took the chance to flee the grey weather in the city for sunny and colorful Mexico! Mama has taken a month over the last three years to go to Mexico in order to learn Spanish and experience the culture. For many reasons it seemed that now would be a great time to learn Spanish- not that I needed any excuse to travel or learn a something new! So, I met Mama for a week in Mexico where I found myself overwhelmed by the experience. Everything seemed enhanced, like it was in high definition- only not fed through a wire onto a TV but instead filling all your senses. Coming from the muted winter of the city Mexico abounded with light, color, rich smells, intricate ... read more

I started my trip in Mexico city on the 25th of January. I went to all the popular spots in the city. The Zocalo is the huge city square with the presidential palace and National Cathedral. I stayed with a very nice family while I was there. They live in Xochimilco, which is in the southern part of the city near the University of Mexico. In this part of the city there are canals that the Aztecs built and used for obvious agricultural purposes, but today it is mostly used for some fishing and on Sundays families come out and rent long brightly painted boats, more like larger gondolas. Someone drives the boat around the canals with plenty of food and beverages being sold from other boats and mariachi music on others. The mexican gondola ... read more

We´ve added photo´s to our previous blogs if you want a peek. Day 4 was a travel day to Cuernavaca. We had a great bus (no chickens allowed). It was air conditioned and we watched 2 movies. Although it cost $60.00 CDN we were glad we didn´t drive because it would have cost us $50.00 in tolls. We settled into Hotel Colonial then headed out to hang out at the zocalo. We thought we found great seats till Neil got crapped on by a bird. We looked up and the trees over head were filled with pigeons. We promptly move to safer grounds. Later while leaving the same square Neil was crapped on again. Laura found this hilarious! Welcome to Cuernavaca. In the evening we watched the most amazing rap dancers bust some moves. Like a ... read more

Okay, so I admit… I haven’t written in a while mainly because I’ve been in a bit of a funk and didn’t feel like passing it on to you all. But the canned-soup version includes things like my country coordinator Heidi leaving for a new job, people I care about struggling with alcohol, feeling like an enabler rather than an empowering figure, and other more selfish things like missing snow, food, people, cancelled vacation plans, and other things that go along with the Christmas season. Then of course with me, there’s ALWAYS the other larger things that get me riled up… the realities of water and food scarcity, corruption and inaction in government (both at home as well as right here in Cuernavaca), and most recently Obama’s not-so-subtle wink to Big Ag when he picked Vilsack ... read more

Hey Everyone! So now that I'm finally back in the states for the holidays, I have some time to catch you all up on the past three months of life at NPH. Here are a few random pictures from the month of October. Here is a list of things that went down: 1. Going to Houston for a LIFE TEEN Youth Minister Training Conference (AND staying with the KEANE's!!!) 2. Baking cakes with some of the girls for our October birthday celebration. 3. Our October birthday celebration that turned into a huge CAKE FIGHT that covered our office floor in whip cream. 4. I helped create a pretty cool Haunted House (really a haunted pathway) outside for Halloween. I got to be a psychotic nurse with a huge knife...it was pretty scary for real! Enjoy the ... read more

My dear family, Though I was hoping to sit down at my computer and add more fun-filled entries with crazy pictures of my energetic teens, I instead am writing this as a request for your prayers. This past weekend I was informed that one of our boys who lived in the house, but had left the orphanage about a month ago, took his own life. Gydgray, known among all the kids as "Rubio" (he was the only one with blues and blond hair) was a boy who you could tell had been through a lot. He has two younger brothers in the house who are obviously having a hard time with their brother's death. This tragedy is of course also affecting the other kids in the home who spent every day with him. My little Polly, ... read more

So apparently all of us gringos out there think that Cinco de Mayo is a big holiday for Mexicans, however it is actually not that big of deal. So apparently for us Americans who go out to eat on the 5th of May at the closest establishment with colorful lights, multi-colored tapestries on the wall, and chimichangas on the menu (which they don't even eat here) and think we are toasting margaritas to the freedom of our amigos south of the border....we are actually just looking for another excuse to drink and eat good food. As if we don't have enough of our own holidays to stuff ourselves and drink with our friends and family. El "Grito" or the cry, is celebrated all day on Monday the 15th and at midnight the loud "cry" happens where ... read more

When I was student teaching in Germany, Papa Burcham always reminded me that EVERYONE has a story…. But it’s not enough to simply know that a story exists. We have to make a deliberate effort to understand and appreciate each person’s unique history, because in doing so, we will inevitably love them as well. When I worried about “How do I be a good and effective teacher?” the only advice Papa B. would ever give was, “Love them. Each and every day, love each and every one. Once they know that, everything else just happens.” I can’t emphasize how much that advice has been ringing true again and again these past few weeks here at ALEM. Most recently, the ALEM team just finished up a 4-day course in human relations. The goal was to help everyone ... read more
