From Mexico City we headed south to Taxco. It was really nice to get out of the city. We left the cloud of smog that engulfs the whole valley and the sun came out. It´s strange - the weather forecast for Mexico City says sunny but you can´t actually see the sun. Taxco was nice. But expensive. So we only spent one night. One massive bonus with taxco was the sheer number of aircooled vw´s clogging the streets. We´ve got some great beetle and camper traffic jam photos! It felt like Run to The Sun but without the water fights.... read more

Have just spent 2 days in a lovely little town called Taxco (tas-co). It"s built on a mountain side (lots of exhausting walks about) and it is famous for its silver. There were squillions of shops selling lovely jewellery and I"m pleased to say that I managed to avoid temptation! More yummy things to eat. I had an interesting soup yesterday which was made from chicken, with all these weird white things that I though might be some sort of cartilidge (sp?)but actually turned out to be some sort of maize or corn. Then it had half an avacado sliced on the top of it and loads of pork scratchings! Weird. My original itinery is changing quite a lot cos of all the crazy weather here. Don"t worry- I"m keeping well away from all hurricanes! Wish ... read more

We took a bus from Mexico City to Taxco this morning. As soon as we got off the bus, Ludo took a swig of vodka straight from the bottle. It was 11.00am. Cheers. I bought some jewellery for mum, she likes silver so I'm in the right town. Lots of cobblestone streets and steep streets. Maybe my Cuba weight will come off with all this walking.... read more

I got to Taxco and it pissed down with rain, very soon and for the next hour I was to discover how difficult it is to get a taxi in Taxco in the rain. NOBODY walks in the rain here, so I stood in the rain for an hour (at least) I stopped checking the time after that, whilst waiting, hoping, preying for a taxi to stop. In the end I had to do as the Romans were doing and fight people off for a taxi. Soaking wet I got to the hotel and boy oh boy what a treat was in store for me. By now I had the beginnings of a stinking cold, which is in fact still with me; I'm at the thick mucus stage whilst writing this. The hotel Melendez had two ... read more

Taxco is known as the Silver City of Mexico. The city is located in the state of Guerrero, 106 miles (170 km) from Mexico City. Silver has been mined in the area since pre-Colombian times. The Spanish picked up the mining pace during the colonial era. The city preserved its Spanish colonial look with its narrow cobblestone streets and Baroque church. The city is known to visitors today for its craftsmanship in silversmithing and fashioning of silver jewelry. Shops selling articles of silver line the main street. My mother and I stayed overnight in Taxco before returning to Mexico City and our Mexicana flight back to Los Angeles. Mr. Stadleman had arranged with a tour company to provide a guide and car for us for the two-day overnight visit to Taxco. However, there appeared to have ... read more
