Hi everyone After a few days in San Cristobal de las Casas, I decided to continue my journey through Mexico. I headed for the town of Palenque. Not very far on the map but 5 winding, twisting hours on the bus. I hadn't realised quite how high I had been in San Cristobal until it came to time to leave. 2,000 metres/6,000 feet for the stat keepers out there. The ancient Mayan ruins in Palenque are considered by many to be the finest. As for the town itself, I didn't take a shine to it. Perhaps it's because I was tired but there was not much going for the town. My guide book described it as a "lively and colourful" town. That would only apply if by "lively" you mean "noisy" and by "colourful" you mean ... read more

Queue Palenque, much hyped Mayan city in the jungle. Unlike Calakmul, Palenque has an extensive tourist network set up around it, together with the hordes of coach trips, hawkers and touting tour guides. Getting past all the hype and hullabaloo to try to enjoy the ruins can prove a bit tricky. We had arrived, courtesy of the only bus out of Xpujil serving Palenque at 3-30am more or less. Despite our best efforts we had not managed to penetrate the Mexican long distance telephone calling system to reserve accomodation (just like Xpujil we comprised Keith, Anna and me). So we were arriving unexpected and not knowing which hostel or hostel or cabañas had a 24hr reception. We tried the much touted El Panchan, but there was no one on recpetion at Maragarita & Ed Cabañas. We ... read more

Yet another early morning awaited us as we arose in the middle of the night to catch a shuttle that brought us up through the Peten region in Guatemala to a river that seperates the Chiapas in Mexico from Guatemala. It was a nice, but chilly boat ride, then another bus ride to Pelenque from the opposite bank. Had a bit of a sketchy time when we found our passports couldn't get stamped at the border because they were 'out of forms', and we were stopped at an immigration checkpoint on our way to the passport office in Pelenque. Luckily, the police bought our story, but not that of the three Mexicans who were with us who we promptly left behind with the border police and carried onwards. We had a pretty late night the first ... read more

Left San Cristobal and moved on further down South towards Palenque, the famous Mayan ruins located 4 hours away from San Cristobal. Decided to take a tour which took us to Palenque in a nice tour van making two stops along the way at Agua Azul and Misol-ha known for its amazing blue rivers and waterfalls. The plan was to take the full day tour and not return to San Cristobal after and stay on in El Panchan in Palenque instead. The cost makes sense compared to just paying for a bus ride. We were lucky as the weather was perfect and sunny. It was raining a fair bit for a few days prior. Agua Azul means blue water in Spanish, and and true to its name, the cascading river was a beautiful blue, cool and ... read more

From Merida we took the nightbus to Palenque what seemed to be a good idea but turned out not to be such a good idea, or at least not for me (krista). The bus driver was more or less a wild rider who just bumped his horn when overtaking another car, besides he got confused with his light and turned it of and on and off all the time.... As you can imagine it gave me small heart attacks and kept my eyes wide open... Luckely Flora had a good night rest and we arrived in the early morning in Palenque and went straigth to the first hotel (cheap and dirty with beds on cement blocks) because we couldn't be bothered and tried to sleep for a while. Unfortunately a crazy rooster was in the yard ... read more

Soon we will be marking the historic day of my birthday. Last year I spent it in Madrid, and they declared a national holiday, and everyone got the day off, and we had a big march and stuff. Some people say it is a coincidence, because it is also Christopher Columbus day, but it wasn´t! My Birthday, Oct 12, marks the day Columbus sailed the ocean blue. So much is wrapped up in that. Now here I am, a gringo of european descent travelling in the very territories Columbus (or Colon, as we´ll call him, for he is so called here) landed upon. îmg=woah In school we are taught colon is some great man, who discovered america, but it is a lie, for others had been here before. Colon represents the doctrine of discovery: he ¨discovered¨this ... read more
