... read more

Deze middag collectivo genomen richting Palenque Ruinas, very very very nice!!! Dit is echt wel indrukwekkend. Ruïnes in de jungle en very very very hot, de maya's moeten nogal conditie gehad hebben met al die trappekes...Tot nu toe het meest indrukwekkend ... read more

Well not totally ruined. Yesterday I took a long tour from Palenque to two ruins near the Guatemala border - Yaxchilan and Bonampak - left town at 6am and got back near 7pm - long, wonderful and extremely hot day. Left early, just as it was getting light out, for the long drive - 148 km plus along the Carretera Fronteriza - a long drive with the frequent traffic bumps (and they are serious bumps in villages and some I think to allow for easier military, police chases as this zone has numerous military checkpoints (we were only stopped at one on the way back - the vans all tend to leave Palenque at the same time) due to the border - immigration, smuggling, was rebel activity area. The drive was beautiful, much in a valley ... read more

Blogger Bec There are many ways a girl can get into her wedding dress: dieting, exercising, fasting, detoxing, pills, having a tube stuck up your bum, mud or seaweed wraps... OR... you could do what I did and get pandemonium inducing, injection requiring, sheet changing gastritis!! Blogger Doug We spent today pooing instead of weeing as Bec so aptly put it. A product of the drugs killing off the infection I suspect. Ben and Phil went off to Palenque during the day whilst we watched a full cycle of programs on Warner Channel cable TV. At around 4:30pm, Ben returned to tell us that, if we were up for it, we were having a guided tour of the Palenque ruins after hours with the head archaeologist of the site. Turns out he was Bens lecturer ... read more

Dont get impressed by the title of this story. the mushrooms, despite being the coolest part, were only one part of our story in palenque. After a 6 hour journey of 250 Km (yes, the bala is rocking it hard!) we arrived to palenque with no aparent mechanical problem (go bala go!) to a place called panchan, situated in the middle of the jungle. under the mountains where the ruins were built thousands of years ago and rebuilt a few decades ago, this place was like tarzans view of cancun, cottages everywhere, rivers with lights and shit with paths on top forming a labirinth than far from being funny, it was quite annoying when drunk at night. The people there were the lonely planet bagpackers whose only topics of conversations are: "hows life in your ... read more

I am in San Cristobal as I write this and already Palenque seems so far away, but more of that in my next entry. Spent 3 nights and 2 days in Palenque - beautiful true lush jungle setting (gets some of the highest rainfall in Mexico but now is the dry season), with hills, rivers, waterfalls and ruins and tourists. My mood in Campeche picked up a bit later than day as I was able to talk to some people - two different women from the hostel - one from Hungary and one from the States who has lived off and on in Mexico for about 5 years and an older guy who I kept bumping into on the way back from buying my ticket at the bus station, in the main square when music was ... read more

This place was Weird, with a capital W. At the bus station in Campeche a guy recommended "this vegetarian camp with hammocks and gardens, close to the ruins." That sounded Ok to me, so I decided to scrub staying at the hostel and check his place out. I arrived as the sun went down, there didn't seem to be any real reception area, just a bar and open plan restaurants. So, after waiting for a bit I enquired about beds. The guy brusquely retorted that the place was full. It was dark, I wasn't about to trudge back to the entrance of the "camp" and try and flag an expensive taxi, with all my bags, so I decided that that was not the answer I would settle for. "Is there anyone else I can talk to?" ... read more

ANGLAIS It is now 6th February and we have some catching-up to do. The next few entries should bring us up to date. Palenque now seems like donkeys years ago ... We failed to take any pics of the ruins (but you can always go to google images if you're interested) and to be honest we've seen more impressive since: Tonina Ruins near Ocosingo. The only Palenque pics we did take were of the fire dancers. Nearby Palenque we went to the falls at Misol-Ha and Agua Azul, where Jason did some "power swimming" with the aid of a rope, against the current in the only place where it was not perilous. Oh! How much fun he had! At Ocosingo, after an afternoon of being stared by kids and adults alike, we ventured in a VW ... read more

Hello all, Here is my next blog entry from my Mexican leg of the trip. After Tulum headed inland (end of the hot white Caribbean beach updates - shame, I know that you all enjoyed reading about the beaches whilst in a UK winter…) Next stop was Palenque a small town (didn’t stop there) but the main attraction is the Mayan Ruins set in the jungle. Very impressive setting for the ruins with amazing jungle backdrops and views from the tops of the temples. Lots of parts still shrouded and buried in jungle awaiting excavation. After Palenque I took a very scenic bus ride to San Cristobal de las Casas, a small colonial town in the highlands of southern Mexico. On the way saw amazing cloud forests and the high levels of poverty of the highland ... read more
