Then wind was still whipping crazy with whitecaps and vapor coming off the bay. Jan had to make alternate plans for us to get to Qaqortoq. The original plan was for a boat to pick us up in Igaliku and transport us to Quqortoq, stopping to see a church ruin. But the wind dictated we weren't going to do that. Plan #2 is to go up & over the ridge by the same route we had walked previously and catch a boat there. The boat ride would take longer, but would be safer. After lots of discussion they decided to give us 6 and a German couple a ride to the other boat dock, and transport our luggage. We met the boat at about 1:45 p.m., and took a fun, bumpy ride to Qaqortoq, which took ... read more

Today 4 of us took a 10 mile hike to see Qooroq glacier. Sheila and John dii not go (John did hike a short distance with us and then turned around) because Sheila’s knee is hurting a lot. In the beginning we were hiking on the road, which is quite rocky, and I walked on the grass next to the road. My toe got stuck in a lump of grass and I pancaked face first in the grass. I wasn’t hurt, just embarrassed. This was Fall #1. Angela, Rick, Jan, and I continued on the road up to several small lakes, then climbed up to a ridge. The fohn winds had arrived during the night and were blowing about 35 miles per hour. Jan told us it would get worse. We arrived at the viewpoint where ... read more

Today was an adventurous day. It started out with meeting a NASA scientist who measures the effect the ocean has on the glaciers. They were going out that day on an airplane to do measurements. He calls himself “Climate Elvis” and has a patch that says “OMG, Oceans Melting Greenland”. On the map I’ve included there are numbers 1 through 4. That is the route we took today. #1 is Narsarsauq; #2 is Qussiarsuk, #3 is Itilleq, and #4 is Igaliku. This will make more sense as you read on. We checked out of our hotel and got on a small boat to travel from Narsarsuaq across the Qooroq Fjord to Qassiarsuk, just across from Narsarsuaq. This place is supposedly where Erik the Red settled when he went to Greenland in 985. At the dock, Jan ... read more

August 8, 2019 – Scenic Cruising of Prince Christian Sound – Weather: 39°F/4°C, sky clear and sunny in am - partly cloudy in pm, wind 1 mph, humidity 84° Prince Christian Sound wends its way through the islands at the southern tip of Greenland. After another night a fog we awoke to a beautifully clear sky and frosty temperatures. We entered the sound at 7:00 am and exited it around 5:00 pm taking in the beautiful scenery, rugged mountains and glaciers coming down to the sea. Due to the twisting course of the sound the Captain kept the ship’s speed under 5 knots, with extended stops in front of several glaciers for photo opportunities and the fishing village of Aappilatioq (130 pop.) which is situated within the sound. Jessica, the EXC Travel Host provided a running ... read more

Greetings from Greenland! Today has been a fabulous day. I took a taxi from the AirBnB to the domestic airport and met the Greenland tour group – 5 of us and our leader Jan (pronounced “Yen”). A couple from New York City: John and Sheila, and a couple from Australia (somewhere north of Sydney): Rick and Angela, and me. Jan said the tour was almost cancelled due to the low number of participants, but they decided to allow the trip to go. Whew – dodged a bullet there. You may be wondering, why Greenland? I've been wanting to come here for about 5 years. Every time I flew to or from Europe I would see the south tip of Greenland and wonder what it would be like to visit there. Then my friend Ellen tells me ... read more

August 7, 2019 – Nanortalik, Greenland - Weather: 42.8°F/6°C, partly cloudy, wind 6.8 mph, humidity 88° We travelled down the south-west coast of Greenland overnight at a leisurely pace of 10 knots passing in and out of fog banks. This morning we arrived at Nanortalik, located on a small island near the mouth of the Tasermiut Fjord at the very southern tip of Greenland. The name of the town translates to the “place of polar bears” which we did not encounter other than those on the town’s official crest. The settlement of the area dates back to the early 18th century when a trading post was established to supply European fishermen and whalers along with the local Inuit. Today the area’s main industries are crab fishing, seal hunting, fishing, and gold mining along with a robust ... read more

August 6, 2019 – Paamiut, Greenland - Weather: at 9:00 am 39°F/4°C, Heavy fog enveloped the ship by 9:30 am, heavy rains in pm, clearing skies at sailing with heavy cloud bank on horizon, wind 4 mph, humidity 99° Today’s port of call is Paamiut (Frederikshab), Greenland. Archaeological evidence shows that people have lived in the area since 1500 B.C. In 1742 the Danes established a trading post here and named it after Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark. Once a trading center for fur and whale products the town of 1,500 today is known for its soapstone carvings and apparel made from seal furs. There has been considerable fog throughout the night as we approached Greenland. This morning as we were nearing the anchorage the fog was so thick, combined with considerable floating ice in the ... read more

"I am perfectly acquainted with the arctic, my knowledge having been acquired by thirty-three voyages to these regions, and by spending three winters there. I have become intimately associated with the Esquimaux and their habits and manners." William Penny 1809 - 1892 Nuuk. I am always surprised at how cosmopolitan Nuuk is! A city in Greenland complete with museums, malls, galleries, theatres and a brewery. The Greenlandic capital is built in a seemingly impossible fjord that twists and cuts its way inland to the ice sheet, a fjord system so complicated that map-makers must have nightmares. It’s quite astounding that there’s a functioning city in among the towering arctic peaks and wild coastline. I am only beginning to understand Nuuk (and Greenland for that matter). I am sure I once thought of Greenland as a far ... read more

The day began with a thick veil of fog engulfing our passage towards Prince Christian Sound. The fog was burning off and by the time that we went up to the Lido for breakfast, today was turning into an incredible sunny day. It was nothing like our last passage through the fog shrouded stony walled passages of Prince Christian Sound. I had worn just a light sweater up for breakfast, and Sharon suggested that I go on up to the Sports Deck, take her phone and take some pictures. All of this because I’d observed a fair-sized iceberg passing by on our entrance to Prince Christian Sound. She was going to go back to the cabin and get the camera. At first there was no noticeable breeze, and I found an opening on the rail. I ... read more

Greenland Our crossing the Labrador Sea was interesting to say the least. We were heading into a force 8 gale and the ship was rocking side to side and up and down, often at the same time. We are on deck three and even this low on the ship it was really rocking. By morning the wind had died down a bit and the swells were smaller but still we knew we were at sea. The show tonight was a group named The Emperors of Soul and the were very good. They did Jackie Wilson, Aretha, Michael Jackson and other hits. They each had good voices and danced well. Later they were interviewed by the cruise director and we found out that there were from England and one from Australia. You would never know from their ... read more
