Terry Fox is a big inspiration to runners and to non-runners After spending a few days in Montreal we were ready to leave. We decided to rent a car a few days to allow us some sightseeing outside the major cities. Here follows a short description of the various places we visited the next few days of our vacation. Brockville Our first stop was in the town Brockville, a small town south of Ottawa. We had heard that they in town have a spectacular railway tunnel, Brockville Tunnel. After we had seen some pictures of it we knew that we had to visit this tunnel. The tunnel is about half a kilometre long and begins and ends in central Brockville. It is the first railway tunnel in Canada and was in active use from 1860 to ... read more

Leonard Cohen rules (and nobody cares about Barbie) Our first stop in Canada was the city Montreal. Montreal is named after the mountain Mount Royal. We felt that we had to visit Mount Royal now that we were in the city. Both because we wanted to see the views from there and because the way we see things a visit to Montreal is not complete without visiting the mountain the city is named after. Mount Royal We walked up to Mount Royal. The mountain is accessible on foot from downtown Montreal thanks to there being walking paths with stairs all the way up to the top. The views at the top were awesome. You can see what it looked like if you watch the panorama at the top of this page. But for some strange reason ... read more

I like this staying in one place more than one night. It means I can stay in bed until 8:00 or as was the case today, 9:00. Charlie joined me after he'd had his breakfast and curled up in my armpit. He's a weird dog. We headed into town around 1:00 and signed up for the guided walking tour of the city. Our tour wouldn't start until 3:00 so we wandered around town. Down the main road a few blocks there was a small fair taking place. There was music playing and several pop-up canopies sheltering hand-made goods, freebies for the kids from the local library, and raffle tickets to support the local First Nations. Upon our arrival we learned the festival was celebrating the 25th anniversary of Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in self government. The Canadian government signed ... read more

I tried to stay up to see the Northern Lights, but when 2:30 rolled around and it was just dark enough to start the first feature at a drive-in movie theater I decided to call it a night. While I was waiting for it to get dark I did pull out that bag of ketchup flavored potato chips and tried a few. Yep, they taste like ketchup. Would I buy them again? No, not my thing. I woke to a beautiful day, the bright sun already high in the sky. Dave spoke with a couple last night who gave him the lowdown of what to expect today. He passed the good news on to us this morning. From Pelly Crossing to Dawson City we can expect to encounter potholes. Lots of them. Some "big enough to ... read more

Only fifteen minutes late on our 9:30 departure time this morning. Not horrible. And it wasn't me who caused it this time. According to Weatherman Mike and his weather app there's still a smoke advisory for the area, but the skies are clear and the sun is shining. It's a great day to be driving (I can say that because all I do is sit in the passenger seat and take pictures). We have bright blue skies with puffy, white clouds; happy little clouds. A favorite pastime of people who drive this stretch of the Alaska Highway seems to be writing your name on the hillside using some of the many rocks made available to you by the annual snowmelt. Some have taken the time to paint their chosen rocks to make them stand out against ... read more

Woke up to the clearest day we've seen in what seems like quite a while, but in actuality has only been four days. I suppose if you've only been on the road six days, four is a long time. We can actually see the cloud cover and patches of blue. The downpour we heard pelting the roof last night worked its magic and cleaned a lot of the smoke from the air. It's refreshing to be rid of the brown-gray filter and see the true green of the trees again. It was a very slow, lazy start this morning. Today's drive will be the shortest at only 94 miles. There's no rush to get on the road. So we didn't. Hold that thought. (One hour later) I had to take a timeout from the blog post ... read more

Today was the first opportunity to actually sleep in. We didn't have to get up and get on the road to the next destination, we were already there. It was pretty nice. When Mike returned from taking Charlie on his morning walk he told me the sun was actually normal looking. It wasn't a fuzzy orange orb in the sky. The smoke had cleared somewhat and you could almost see a few patches of blue if you squinted hard enough and used a little imagination. By the time I dragged myself out of bed, everything was as it was the last time I'd looked up. Mike and Dave went to the park's restaurant for breakfast. Teri and I were invited, but turned it down and opted for a more gradual start to the day. According to ... read more

The Water Doesn't Look Too Bad From Up Here

It was a drizzly morning. Not enough to make packing up miserable, just enough to let you know it was there. As I said in yesterday's post, Mike and I went to the on-site restaurant for dinner. The dining area had a high curved ceiling. At about the height a regular ceiling would have been built, there was a wide wooden shelf that ran on three sides of the room. Now on this shelf there was some greenery; some bushy greenery, some viney greenery. The greenery on the shelf, and the shelf on the wall and the walls there in the dining area-o. Oops, sorry. So among the plastic pine boughs and fake trees were several taxidermied animals posed to attack, alert or flee. It was a little too dark in there last night to take ... read more

Sleep was much more comfortable last night. I remembered to turn the electric mattress pad on and it didn't get as cold overnight as it did the night before. We were up and on the road by 8:30. On our way through downtown Chetwynd we passed the many chainsaw carvings Dave had added to the list of possible things to see and do nearly a year ago when we began our planning meetings. As we drove by them I wished we had made an attempt to drive in to look at them properly. They're very impressive. But when you're up early and traveling 350 - 400 miles a day you don't really have the energy to do much more than set up camp, eat dinner and relax before going to bed and doing it all over ... read more

The Building of the Alaska Highway

North America » Canada » British Columbia July 8th 2023

After a chilly night we woke early to get started on the longest leg of our trip. After a quick breakfast, we broke camp and continued east. I know, you're thinking, "But Alaska is northwest." We're heading over the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the official starting point of the Alcan Highway located in Dawson Creek, BC. We took the lead again to start the leg and an hour down the road I realized I'd left my phone in the trailer. We were now relying solely on Mike's phone for communication as well as navigation. This is not good because his phone has been having issues connecting to the internet and we kinda need that to help us get from here to there. All was going smoothly for about half an hour when I screwed up while ... read more
