North Pole We left Fairbanks and headed southeast to the North Pole. No not THE North Pole but the town in Alaska named North Pole. Of course there is a Christmas theme to the town. We noticed even a welding company had gigantic candy canes as part of the entrance to the company. Items that are mailed from this town are postmarked “North Pole.” Delta Junction This was our next stop. We took pictures by the marker for the end of the Alaska Highway, so now we have a picture at each end. We had planned to have dinner at a restaurant outside of DJ on the way to Tok, but it was closed. Being self contained we made our own dinner at a scenic pullout. On our drive we saw moose. Once there was ... read more

On Wednesday August 15th Martha, Sally and I drove to Kluane. It was perfect weather for the scenic drive. We stopped at Haines Junction Visitors Centre where we saw a presentation about Kluane National Park. We went to the bakery and bought smoked salmon bagels for dinner and some things for a picnic lunch the following day. We arrived at Kluane Cabins Bed and Breakfast at about 6-30pm and enjoyed our bagels with a view of Kluane Lake. After dinner we went to the Kluane Research Station where we had a drink with Lyn and David. Alice was out for dinner at Haines Junction so we arranged to see her the following morning. On Thursday Cecile prepared us a delicious breakfast for us including some huge hot cakes. After chatting to Alice, Lyn and David we ... read more

After arriving at Skagway on August 13th we got a lift from the airport to the Skagway Hostel. We dropped off our luggage and strolled around town. There were 3 large cruise ships at Skagway so there were lots of tourists in town! We found a good restaurant near the wharf where we ate halibut burgers. After that we saw the "Days of '98 show" about Soapy Smith who was a con man in the early gold rush days of Skagway. The next day we got up early to catch the 8 am train up the White Pass. We had fantastic views and there was a good commentary telling us all about the gold rush days and points of interest. At Fraser in British Columbia we caught a bus. The bus got to Whitehorse at 1pm ... read more

Day 4 July 17 482 miles taveled Out of the grain fields and into the spruce forests. Got onto the Alaskan Highway at Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Spent the night at a campground with a bunch of French Canadian pipeline construction workers. They are finding lots of natural gas in the area and will be piping some it our way. We also met a young couple from Green Bay and a couple of old geezers, like you know who, from Iowa at the camp ground. Also had a slight mishap with the laptop computer. A Geoose set it on a lawn chair when he went to get a beverage. He came back and sat on the computer and it hasn't worked since. Will be using Library services along the way until I find someone to fix ... read more

Hello Everyone! Well after reading Jenica’s blog it made me really want to write my own… however, mine is sadly not as adventurous or exciting! My biggest news is that Marcus (one of my best buddies from my last stint in the creek) came up to visit us with his friend Chris, and together we booted it to Dawson City. The top of the world highway was absolutely amazing and breathtaking, and Dawson City - once a rival of New York during the gold rush - was very cool with old buildings and hotels and saloons everywhere. It’s here that you can do the “Sour Toe” a gold miner back during the rush lost his big toe, and now travelers can buy their favorite shot, toss in the toe, and shoot it back to get ... read more

Whitehorse Beringia Interpretive Center had great exhibits. We watched some movies, participated in some spear throwing instructions and toured the exhibits. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon. Their website is: www.beringia.com. McBride Museum had a lot of displays on the gold rush. They also had Sam McGee’s cabin. He knew Robert Service and that is how his name was used in one of the poems. It was interesting to learn about his life rather than the life that was associated with the name in the poem. We’ll be passing through Whitehorse on our way home, so we deferred some things until that time. Lake Laberge It’s north of Whitehorse and of course we visited it. I’ve learned more about Robert Service, his life and his poems since being in this area. George did a ... read more

My Greta Garbo phase is over. No longer cycling solo. Met up again with Alain and Tom, Swiss guys that I met last year in South America, in Vancouver. The last time I saw Alain was in Bolivia when I watched him cycle off into the rain forest with Felix the map cutter, an organic farmer from Dresden. At the time I vowed that I wouldn't let myself get hurt again and rush straight into another cycling relationship on the rebound. However time is a great healer. After a year pedalling on my own it has been good fun riding with them from Vancouver to Whitehorse. We have developed our own exclusive touring language which is a combination of badly pronounced Spanish (with lots of over enthusiastic r's being rolled all over the place), Swiss-German ... read more
