De temps a autre ... read more

Winter in Saskatchewan, it's bright, hard and exhilarating. Everyday the sky changes around me, the wind rises and drops, the temperature soars and plummets. On the 15th we had wind of 120 kilometres per hour. Shingles were torn off roofs and hurled across the lake in front of me. The wind has an incredible effect on those isolated from everyone else. It takes on a persona, raises the hair on the back of your neck, and makes you continually look over your shoulder to see what is stalking you. The cabin where I am staying, was untouched by the wind, but as the windows shook in their frames, I was awed by the clouds of snow that were billowed and chased across the lake. It was an exciting and humbling birthday for me. Dinner, wine, chocolate ... read more

Jan 1st - 8th The return to Saskatchewan was easy, but the weather then changed. I love winter. I love the super bright clear skies. I love snow. I love skiing across country. I do not love -38 with a wind chill of -50. Wow was it cold. We nestled into the cabin on Fishing lake and we refused to leave. We watched movie marathons of Jurassic Park and Star Wars, and ate caramel popcorn. We stopped to look out at the panoramic view of the lake, feeling the pull to get out, move around, do something and then looked at the thermometer and went back to the movies. It was lovely, in its hibernation fashion. Then we began to brave the outdoors as dinners and visits and Ukrainian Christmas made their demands. It was the ... read more

Day 24. 9267Km. I just did the math and so far I'm getting 15.1 mpg or for you younger folks I'm using 18.7L/100Km. What would have been wrong with 5.35 Km per Litre? It's probably a European thing. That's about 50% more fuel than I use without the trailer. I'm moving about 13,000lbs which is probably a little less than I would do with my old trailer when it was loaded with fire wood but this one being so high it's like pushing a sheet of plywood through the air. What I'm saying is this one is more noticeable. All in all not too bad. There are guys out there with gas pickups who get that kind of mileage driving around empty. I slept in a bit this morning and just as I was starting to ... read more

Will Vitaliy get an American visa so he can get through customs on the way to Guatemala? He and my daughter Rachelle are driving to Edmonton right now and plan to catch a 7AM flight to Vancouver. On Thursday morning he has an interview at the American consulate (he's a Ukrainian citizen, with permanent residency in Canada). Later that day they'll catch a late afternoon flight back to Edmonton, and then drive back to Saskatoon so he can go to work early Friday morning! I leave Esterhazy on March 20 in the afternoon, fly to Dallas via Toronto Sunday, and then to Guat City via Mexico City on Monday, arriving late afternoon. Rachelle and Vitaliy fly Monday morning and arrive Monday evening via Dallas, Tampa, and Miami. What follows our arrival there is a week and ... read more

Hi everyone! This is all very exciting! A first of many things; first MSc., first backpacking trip coming up in a matter of hours, and of course first blog entry. My parents are seeing me off on a jet plane early Saturday morning- destination Vancouver. I imagine it'll be a bittersweet goodbye, mixed with excitement as well as apprehension. I will miss all my friends and family very much, and plan on blogging on this site throughout my journey. I'm sure I will think of some of you during various situations and destinations; you know those points in life where you for instance, meet someone that reminds you of someone else, or perhaps see something that you just know would be appreciated by a friend or family member. Overall, those instances where you say 'oh, I ... read more

Our first day off on the road! We had a relaxing afternoon in Yorkton. Hainsworth swam laps, and Blais, Del Campo, and Ramsden checked out the only movie playing in town: Cloverfield, a forgettable movie that is a Godzilla / Blair Witch blend. We all visited the laundromat later, then went for dinner at the York House Restaurant.... read more

Today was our two-show day in the Yorkton High School. It’s a spirited school with a great athletic program, great band and music spaces, and a real theatre! Sheila, our contact, served us hot Tim Horton’s coffee and muffins. Mmmm! We visited Free Trade Coffee for lunch and cheesecake, then did our second show in the school theatre. The evening was filled with waterpark, and Harvest Pizza takeout back at the motel.... read more

We performed this morning in Waywayseccapo, and had some residents from the Kesay reserve attending. Then we packed ourselves back into the van and SUV for the 2 ½ hour drive to Yorkton, SK. Our motel is right across the street from an indoor recreation centre which features a waterpark. Hot tub, steam room, sauna, wave pool, diving boards—you name it. A leisurely drive through the town revealed a movie theatre, a casino, pool halls, and ample dining and grocery-shopping opportunities.... read more

Can someone please explain why every year during the hottest week of summer the vacuum hose that the controls the heating and cooling vents in my van disconnects itself? As I fired up the van to leave for Yorkton from Gary and Gina’s I was comforted knowing that we would be in a climate controlled cabin for the forthcoming two hours. It’s not like I can’t take the heat. In fact I quite enjoy the heat of summer. However, when the temperature is at 27 degrees at eight in the morning ... read more
