Cousins Connecting
Owen and Benjamin loved hanging out with their "big" cousin Monique. PLEASE NOTE: YOU CAN READ THE JOURNALS FROM THE BEGINNING BY CLICKING ON SMALL PICTURE TITLED THE NOWLAN AND DORE FAMILY. Can someone please explain why every year during the hottest week of summer the vacuum hose that the controls the heating and cooling vents in my van disconnects itself? As I fired up the van to leave for Yorkton from Gary and Gina’s I was comforted knowing that we would be in a climate controlled cabin for the forthcoming two hours. It’s not like I can’t take the heat. In fact I quite enjoy the heat of summer. However, when the temperature is at 27 degrees at eight in the morning it makes sense to try to stay cool as long as possible. So as we drove away I turned the dial but get no response from the controls. It has happened before so I knew the exact problem. In fact Jerry Breton had remedied the problem on two separate occasions for a very reasonable price. We drove to Yorkton with some latent cooling coming
Holy Hail Stones
No, our phone is not super tiny. The sky was falling! through the floor vents and by the time we arrived at the Nowlan residence the temperature in the van was comfortable. Not like Owen and Benjamin would notice. Owen fell asleep as soon as we left Regina and Benjamin occupied himself with stories from a CD until he fell asleep.
We made it to Yorkton in the late afternoon and were greeted by Pat and Nicole. It had been quite a while since we’ve visited Yorkton and the house is looking great. We enjoyed yet another great meal and had a great visit. The boys had so much fun playing Wei the night before at Gary and Gina’s we thought they might be burnt out. But of course they are young…and they both had a nap during the drive so they were good to go again. They loved playing video games with Monique and we didn’t see them for most of that evening. After touring around and visiting with so many people and so many places it was nice just to sit around and relax for a day or two. We did get a chance to go to the wave pool and water slide park with Pat and Monique. Who can argue with a water park in the midst of a three week heat wave?
As Monique was leaving to visit Giselle in Kananaskis, and an immanent call from work pending for Pat, we packed our things and headed to the Melville Regional Park. The Regional Park in Melville will always be a special place for me. Summers in Melville were typically spent sharing time between the ball diamond and the swimming pool and in the early years, at the playground. Growing up in a house on Jubilee Crescent meant our family had easy access to the park. We arrived in the early afternoon and set up camp at our favorite site. Of course we couldn’t do anything in Melville without first taking the tour. We cruised around town looking at the sights and then headed to one of my all-time comfort zones- the Melville swimming pool. I’m sure they have many significant changes to the mechanical systems, the concrete, and paint but the pool looks the same to me. Of course it should be noted they switched the locations of the men’s and women’s change room. I’m sorry for what I saw by accident that afternoon…just kidding. Of course since we had set-up our tent in Melville, the inevitable storm with a bonus of golf balled sized hail rained from above. The last time we camped in Melville we experienced a major wind, rain, and hailstorm in the middle of the night. Given past experience we were confident the tent would survive.
After the pool we made the mandatory stop at Matty’s and then tried tracking down some other friends. We spent an enjoyable evening with Scott, Lois and Nicole at their home. The next day was spent with Doug and Scott and their families. We had a BBQ and smallish party at our campsite with more friends coming over to enjoy. It was great to throw the Frisbee and fry meat with some old pals. We even got to go see the Millionaires play ball against Yorkton under the new lights at Pirie Field. Unfortunately other commitments cut our visit to Melville short and we never got to see many people who were on our list. We headed back to Saskatoon a mere 40 hours after arriving in Melville. Although the time we spent there was quite short we were able to pack it full of memories thanks to our friends. Once back in Saskatoon we had a chance to relax and visit with Diane and Terry over the long-weekend. With the Fringe and Owen’s hockey camp occurring in the forthcoming week it was nice to chill out for a few days.
P.S. We got the A/C fixed in Yorkton at the GMC dealership. They changed the hose as the original part was hard plastic and prone to succumbing to the vibrations from the road(Otter Lake). Great service thanks to Pat and his relationship with the dealership.
