So who are we? Nathan and I (Anne-Marie) met in high school when we were 14 and in grade 9. We've been best friends ever since. That's about it. When I decided to spend two months this summer traveling in southeast Asia, I naturally invited my best bud to come along. This blog belongs to both me and Nathan but the first month or so of updates will be solely from me as I am taking on part of Thailand and all of Vietnam by myself. Nathan and I are meeting in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam on August 7 for the latter half of the trip during which we will visit Cambodia, Laos and southern Thailand. I'm both nervous and excited about traveling alone. I've never really done it before on this level and ... read more

Or my back, to be more precise. Only, it wasn't a straw. It was a couch. And no, I wasn't carrying it. It was a lazy day on the farm after a busy week in Toronto, I had just finished watching a movie with Jean, while doing my nails and went to get up off the couch. Searing back pain seized me and became increasingly severe over the following hours until I could barely walk. Even the slightest movement sent nasty nerve pulses to my brain. I knew I'd done a number on myself, of course, this being the 3rd time something like this has happened. But getting off the couch?!?!? I mean, COME ON! These days, the capacity to tie my shoe laces unassisted or being able to squeeze an extra 5 minutes walking out ... read more

Somewhere this week we figure that we have reached half way on our trip by distance, but since we are not sure of the exact place, we decided to have a week long party! why not? It started with a 3 day canoe trip in gorgeous Quetico Park followed by a relaxing day in Thunder Bay chez my good friend, Fiona, where we took in the World Cup soccer and Blues Fest festivities, not to mention the infamous Finnish pancakes. Thanks Fiona and Jeff! To re-cap up from my last entry; most noteworthy is that we are now a group of three on the road. In Pipestone, Manitoba we met up with Dan, a young man from Chicago who was on his way to Vancouver but after a few weeks of solo riding he was in ... read more

Odometer: 33673km Here we go on another driving day. This is a Saturday, so there should be fewer trucks at the border and most people should be where they want to be for the weekend. As I read back over my recent entries, I realize that I've made it seem as though there is nothing to see in many of the locations I've been. I need to be careful to note that my purview is from the motorcycle. If I had a family with me who wanted to play in the water and sand, or I was a fisherman, or a hunter; the country in Minnesota and Michigan would be fantastic. There, I feel better now that I've confessed. I left Goderich at 7:00am. There were few cars on the road and no police so I ... read more

Trying to get past the hump on Lake Superior, that was our only goal in life and darn it it is taking us FOREVER! Along the way rocky outcroppings and inukshuks wave bye as we make haste. Ontario all looks the same. We've bypassed Ottawa and Toronto and have tried to make it over the hump. We drove along the northern border of majestic Lake Superior. That led us to Wawa, Ontario, a tiny little town that closes at 10 and we are out of gas so we will sleep here. At least it was friendly. Some restaurant lady offered us a pizza for 10 Canadian bucks.... read more

I had a successfull, although long, day. It took sometime and trips to the library, the Land Registry Office, and Knox Presbyterian Church, but I found where my Dad use to live in Goderich. The thing that made it tough was that, back in the time of the 1911 Census, there were no street addresses. However, I did find that he lived on St. Vincent and that street is only on block long. A very nice lady in the Land office pulled out the right book and I found the particular plot. Referencing that to a present map pinpointed the house. I went over to the house and met some of the family now living there. They had no idea about the history of the place and couldn't decide amongst themselves whether they had been there ... read more

Well Canada Day in the capital is certainly something. I'm not sure if it's for everyone but I suppose it's worth seeing at least once. The crowds were giant. I am not sure how many people showed up in and around Capital Hill but it sure made moving around difficult. There were estimates of about 100,000 people out and about between the Hill, Major Hills Park and the park in Gatineau which I can't remember the name of. I went up to the Hill around 10:00 so that I could see the RCMP musical ride and the changing of the guard but the place was so crowded that I couldn't see anything anyway! Later on Mom, Colin and me wandered around Wellington Street and down into Major Hills Park. There were some street performers and musicians ... read more
