The day started early but at least it wasn’t 5:00am like the Labrador days. But we had a long drive ahead of us as we planned to overnight in Gander. It is one of the tricky parts of the Newfoundland experience; there is only one road that criss-crosses the country and the things we want to see are spread out. The first stop on our day’s adventure was the whaling station at King’s Point. Here we learned not just about whales but also about attempts to create an “All Red Line” to link the British Empire by telegraph in the late 1800s. There also was an attempt to link the Empire by railroad including sailing in the Fog Free Zone. The Lusitania used to call in here on a regular basis. Hard to imagine when you ... read more

Today was cool, high 61, overcast but fabulous weather. Headed north -30 min- to the tip of Bonavista peninsula which was sunny and beautiful. Stopped at several small villages (see pictures with captions), once in a life-time adventures. We were fortunate to travel the road to Elliston, that’s under construction during the week(even though we drove a large stone/rock road),to see the breeding area of the Atlantic Puffin, the provincial bird. Here’s today’s adventures:... read more

Today we woke up to an absolutely beautiful day- not a cloud in the sky. Went to breakfast in the dining room that overlooked the bay and Atlantic Ocean. Excellent tea, coffee, muffins, with eggs and bacon. Decided on a scenic 5K trail , Skerwink Trail, that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. A popular whale sighting but none today - also icebergs broken off from Greenland have been seen floating near this area. This trail was very steep and narrow in spots but other areas were open - just gorgeous. Max and I were so thankful to have our walking sticks and our water bags to sip water as we hiked. After our 2 hr hike, we headed to Port Rexton’s Brewery for a local brew and scrumptious customized grill cheese sandwiches from their food truck. After a bumpy flight from Toronto to St John’s NL, we picked up our rental car and headed to Bonivista Peninsula to our B&B located in Port Rexton. On our way on the trans Canada highway, we spotted a moose running along the side of the road. Ok, we’ve only been in Canada for 1 1/2 hrs and we see a moose already!! Picture shows how close the moose was to the road. When we reached the peninsula, we had to turn around and take a 50 minute detour on the back roads because of an accident on the main highway. Did I mention in the pouring rain. We were so glad to pop the cork when we arrived at our destination. This area is absolutely beautiful, even in the rain and fog. I’ll have pictures ... read more

Despite the fourth day of rain, had a busy day today. First stop was Elliston where I wanted to see the root cellars. Elliston is the root cellar capital of the world with over 130 spread over town, some still functional. Interesting to see storage methods of days gone by. While in Elliston, there is a well-recognized puffin viewing site where you can see puffins up close. I missed the fact that this was seasonal based upon the birds migration. As it turned out, right place, wrong time as not a single puffin was seen. Oh well, the root cellars were worth the trip. Off to Bonavista to view the majestic red and white lighthouse and scramble (carefully) around the cliffs viewing the action of the waves. Although still functioning, in previous times it was manned ... read more

Day 8 started with a drive to King's Cove to hike the LIghthouse Trail. The fifth straight day of rain made the trails a tad wet but during the actual walk it was only "misting". I took the short inner loop of 1.7 km which of course takes you to the King's Cove Lighthouse. Actually it was kind of a boring trail, walking through forest with little coastal views except at the lighthouse. Following this, I drove toTickle Cove just to take a picture of the name. Actually, I did bump into the Walkers Trail while there which I took for a km or so just to give a tad more creedence to my visit. Off to Bonavista to check into my hostel and around four I started the Cape Shore Trail. This is a 3 ... read more

Leaving St John's today for a 3 plus hour drive to my hostel in Trinity East. Although raining as I was driving, fortunately it stopped as I arrived allowing me to contemplate hiking the Skerwink trail in the area that afternoon. This is a 5.3 km trail marked as moderate/strenuous. The first km was relatively flat and easy going through trees and along a roadway or trail. The next 3 km hugged the coastline providing ample opportunities to view the ocean, various coves and beaches, and numerous sea stacks, with multiple observation points along the way. It is a rugged trail and extremely wet given the amount of recent rain. The various up and downs of the trail ( and there are many) reflect the trails rating. It took over two and a half hours for ... read more

Friends -- As you can see, the first few photos are of puffins. Bob and I walked out to a ledge where there was a crevasse separating people from the puffin colony on an adjoining ledge. I always wondered where they hung out. Apparently, they don't just sit around in trees. We could have spent an hour or so just watching those cute little birds. However, it was windy and cold, so we moved on to the root cellars in the little village of Elliston, very near Bonavista which was at the tip end of a northeastern peninsula. If you can read the sign, you will be informed that Elliston is the world's leader in root cellars, over 100 still useable. Root veggies probably do well in that cold, windy weather. The crate in front of ... read more

Quick breakfast in our room, pack and on our way. On the way out of Holyrood, we stop at the harbour to take a final look. A pleasant, friendly little town. Today is gorgeous. As if to make up for yesterday, there literally is not a cloud in the sky. Forecast high is 20°C. We take the Trans-Canada (TCH) heading west. It's a well maintained limited-access highway and we make good time. Soon we are no longer in the Avalon Peninsula but in what you might call east-central Newfoundland. The highway maintains a relatively high elevation, providing occasional glimpses of the sea on one side or the other in the distance. The forest is almost exclusively coniferous with only an occasional flash of colour that betrays a deciduous tree, usually a birch or more rarely a ... read more

Another beautiful day here in Trinity. A brilliant blue sky, though slightly cooler than yesterday. We enjoy a complimentary "continental" breakfast at the hotel, which has a lot of lovely choices. We fall into a conversation with a couple from Calgary, who have been here for a few days and are willing to share their experiences. We try to get on a whale-watching tour but it's all booked up. Apparently, orcas are in the vicinity. We put ourselves on the waiting list for tomorrow. That means we can devote the day to circumnavigating the Bonavista Pennisula and return back to the Artisan Inn in Trinity for another night. Our destination, Bonavista, lies at the very top of the pennisula. Heading north, we opt for the long, scenic route along the east shore. We pass through many ... read more
