New to this blog idea. I will just start in by asking what is the "real world" to you? I have been travelling lately and when I get back to home base people always say the same thing, "Welcome back to the real world!" It brings up a great song from the early 80's from a band called Talk Talk, 'Life's what you make it'. If working low wage jobs and being too tired to contemplate anything after work besides staring blankly at an electrical hole in the wall(insert Survivor episode #576 here) is the real world, then I'd rather stick to travelling. There is something deeply wrong with "the real world". ... read more

It is so frustrating to not know where a loved one is and how they are doing. No blame on them, for a number of factors can interfere with proper communication; poor telephone system, non-existant internet, etc. Why can't we all have ESP damn it! Although i guess no one would have any secrets anymore. Might make for a better world in the long run. At least we'd get to the heart of our problems instead of bad communication. Like couples wouldn't fight over who left the remote in the wrong place when really what they are saying is I don't want to be taken 4 granted and I need a hug. Sentimental with a bit too much mental I know but there you have it. I miss my friend and I need to know she ... read more

Having spent a fair bit of time in Vancouver, myself, Lucy, our new English friend Madaline who I'd met in Toronto who'd rocked up to our hostel in Vancouver; and Jo the Aussie chick, decided it was time for a bit of a girlie trip to Vancouver Island. After a 5 hour journey, including 3 busses and a ferry, we arrived in Victoria. A place that people had been raving about. Personally, I wasn't overly impressed with it but there were some nice places. We decided to stay there for only 1 day, 2 nightas then move on. We hired bikes and cycled through the park to the coast. The breaks on my bike were really sensitive and as a consequence, I ended up almost being crushed by a truck when I hit the brekas too ... read more

Sorry for the long gap in updates as I fell behind, so I am going back a bit in history. After one hell of a long trip (6 hrs), we finally manage to make it to Victoria, all it takes is a train, three buses and ferry journey. After finding our hostel and getting settled into a 42 person room (the hostel is a listed building so they can't put in any dividing rooms). Later on in the day we go for a stroll around Victoria. Then later I made a large pot of vegetarian chilli that seem to go down very well. The next day we explored around Victoria, it all centered around a very picturesque harbour. Full of yachts and seaplanes and tourists. We stopped for lunch at a local cafe, were I had ... read more

I'm in Victoria, British Columbia a GORGEOUS little part of ocean, harbor, old growth forest, crazy music, awesome food and a fantastic combination of ocean and moutain all at the same time. If anyone gets a chance to go, here's some hints on amazing adventures to take: -Go down to fisherman's warf, eat fish and chips *omg so good*, feed the cute seals *if you move the fish around above the water, the seals will roll over!*, and check out the houses that are floating on the water. -Check out the empress hotel, uber-fancy, where tea costs $50 a cup if you go during high tea. (just go down the street and drink other tea, but look at the empress hotel while you do it, and i'm sure its the same. wouldn't actually know, i don't ... read more

After a fantastic week or so in Vancouver, unexpectedly extended after I lost my wallet (a big drama but everything got sorted in the end) Lucy, Amy, Madeline and I headed over to Vancouver Island. We spent a night in Victoria which is definitely the 'british' part of British Columbia but to be honest wasnt that wrapped with the place. We rented bicycles and did a bit of riding around the city and coast and had sushi for dinner (we love our sushi - again to be explained in another post) So being less than impressed with Victoria we decided to head to Tofino. Tofino Tofino was fantastic! We stayed at the Whaler's Cove HI which was the best backpackers I have been in to date. The first night we headed into town for what is ... read more

The day started way too early, for people who are supposed to be on holiday, at 6am! Today we were going to catch the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island, 1 ½ hours away. It was tipping it down and we hoped that it would improve, as today would involve plenty of walking. Breakfast was again the delights of Mc D’s before heading to Tsawwassen ferry port. We arrived in good time so pulled out the lap top to update the blog while sitting in the car waiting to board the ferry. Once on, we strolled around the decks taking in the passing views, then moved down into the warmth to have a proper breakfast! We chose the ‘meatless’ breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs, hash browns and two slices of brown toast with jam and ... read more

Traveling can be very demanding. Having to decide where to go, where to eat and who to talk to every day is a full time job. Especially after a week in Whistler where hard work included: Taking about an hour every morning to get at least four layers of clothing on, getting yourself back up after falling into half a meter or powder, cooking macaroni and cheese every night because you are on a budget and having to try at least four new beer brands every night (market research - have decided I’m going to be a freelance beer expert) and telling my life story over and over again to strangers. So….it was a very tired little Vicki who landed at the Ens’ residence in Sidney, Victoria last week. Luckily for me I had landed in ... read more

I had my interview in Downtown Victoria this morning. Driving me to and from was Ken, who I love talking to. On the way to the beautiful Parliament Buildings, he was ranting to me about the current government now. Was funny. Anyway, the interview went well. I answered all the questions the best I could. And the girls that were after me came all the way from Prince Rupert! So they had to fly in and stay overnight. At least it's all reimbursed. Ahhh. I should've taken more pictures inside!! The place is really beautiful. These pics I have now don't do the place justice.... read more

A post-conference four day weekend spurred a much needed get-away for two of us middle school teachers. After completing our final parent-teacher conference we hastily headed for our separate homes where we gathered gear and surfed the web looking for anywhere within a day's drive to play in nature. Settling on Tofino, we loaded kayaks, checked ferry schedules and bagged the necessary books, cameras, maps, cards, and iPod. First thing in the morning we would begin our adventure north. Not having ever traveled together (Sarah, being new in the area and I having recently lost my adventure buddy to Singapore) we didn't know what to expect for the weekend. We shared goals of relaxing, hiking, and being on the water in some fashion. But it wasn't until Sarah called on her way to my house, joyfully ... read more
