I've had problems publishing blogs and got fed up with it so its been a while, sorry if you've been frustrated trying to open a "private" blog. You should now be getting open blogs. So, we've had a great time so far with Larry & Judy. Liz and Judy have been exchanging NHS notes, just like us ex coppers swinging the lamp. HaHa! Sunday L&J took us out sightseeing on the lake in their cruiser for several hours, admired lots of very expensive houses including those with float plane garages! The lower part of the lake was pretty busy with boats taking advantage of the fab weather. Up the Taylor Arm it was quiet and peaceful. We finished with a swim off a friends dock and beers and nachos at the Fish and Duck Pub, magic. ... read more

A quiet start to the week, pottering around the house, in and out to PA, drinkies down the Fish & Duck. Shock, horror! IT RAINED!! Not much, a bit of occasional drizzle Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday. It didn't get cold though and it dawned a nice day Wednesday when we went on a one night road trip to Campbell River on the Inside Passage coast. This was recommended by my old mate Rik who was there last year with Angie; they went kayaking in the rain! - Well I think they did. He mentioned kayaking and rain in the same sentance. In fact he mentioned rain in most sentances about that holiday :( I'm sure he thinks I've gone to a different Vancouver Island as until this week we've had great sunny weather. It's about ... read more

Last Sunday we visited the Coulson Fire Fighting facility on the other side of the lake. They are restoring one of the seaplanes so it can fly out to a museum in the USA. Its being repainted in its original US Navy dark blue. There were originally seven built, only two remain, the one in service as a water bomber and the one being restored. We had a walk in the lakeshore park and looked at the first nation petroglyphs on the rocks. Roast pork for dinner. Wednesday Larry and I were up in the dark at 5.30am to go fishing with neighbour Richard who is a commercial fishing boat captain. The public launch at PA was a hive of activity, boats launching every couple of minutes. Word had got around that the Springer Salmon run ... read more

After an uncomfortable Tuesday night (burning legs:) I drove the truck down to Victoria for a couple of days. Stopped at Cathedral Grove to inspect the arboreal spectacularium. (made that one up, don't bother checking the dictionary :) a grove of giant trees. Some very impressive specimens. The Big Tree ( a lot of thought went into that one!) was over 70m tall and 800 years old. Lots of tourists too. About 100 miles later I pulled up at Steve Drane HD dealership, Victoria. The only dealer on the island. It became apparent that that last sentence was very significant. Island prices, captive market and HST tax! Expecting to spend a wedge I was very disappointed: limited choice, high prices as bad as UK, (ie: rain suit I bought in Denver for $200 was C$300), no ... read more

Sunday morning was hot but I went out for a walk along Faber Road, admiring the houses overlooking the lake as I went. Moved from shaded areas one to another. As I proceeded in a westerly direction (old habits die hard :)) I heard the engines of the water bomber start up. Realising it was going to take off I jogged up and down the road trying to get a clear view through the trees for a photo or video. I must have amused the neighbours as I frantically searched for a good position; there were a lot of trees! I failed to get the takeoff but it slowly circled the lake twice before flying away. It did fly over me at one stage though so I got some pics. Spent the late afternoon swimming again, ... read more

Sadly, on Tuesday this week, Larry & Judy's Labrador Sonny had to be put down. Sonny had been unwell for some time and eventually, after a bad night, was unable to get up. The vet examination confirmed that he was undoubtedly suffering from a large tumour in his abdomen which was causing extensive problems. He was nearly 14 and had had a good life. Didnt want Judy to have to cook so I bought us a Chinese from Quality Foods, huge portions and tasty! Wednesday we drove to Tofino on the Pacific coast. A smal trendy fishing town at the end of the Pacific Rim Highway. We stopped at the famous Long Beach, a UNESCO world heritage site. Picturesque. In Tofino we watched charter boats unloading their catch whilst we ate lunch. I had a very ... read more
