Distance driven today: 284 miles / 457 km Cumulative distance driven: 1,703 miles / 2,741 km Today’s trip: Fort St. John, British Columbia, Canada to Prince George, British Columbia, Canada Hours of sunshine during the ride: 5 ;-) Today’s ride was pretty uneventful, apart from a pesky problem with the onboard system monitoring the brakes of the motorcycle. About one hour into the ride, the warning system on the control panel, keeping track of the health of the brakes, started flashing. It indicated that there was a “brake failure”. I immediately stopped to trouble shoot, but nothing that I could come up with helped me figure out what was causing the error message, or how to make it go away. I tried turning off and on the ignition key, pumping the front and rear brake, taking ... read more

Another sunny day in Prince George. We got up leisurely and then I headed to do a load of laundry. We will be dry camping for the next 6 days so figured I needed to get a head of the dirty clothes game. HA! Tonight we took Jon and Joyce out to dinner for being such great wagon masters. They have done a great job keeping us together and taking us some wonderful places. Joe and I have been with them since San Antonio (over 10,500 miles ago), so we will really miss them when we part ways after Banff. We went to a great local place called Camelot. They had an outstanding prime rib buffet and an 8 foot table full of every kind of dessert you could think of. I won't eat for two ... read more

It was a bright sunny day today and the roads were spectacular. The primary source of income in this area seems to be logging, farming and ranching. We did not see any wildlife today, but did see a lot of cows and horses. LOL The weather all of a sudden got hot (85 degrees today and 90 tomorrow), so we might have to head for the mountains and cooler country. Happy Birthday to our traveling pal, Joyce!!!... read more

Last weekend, I had hoped to go to Spock Days, in Vulcan Alberta. But, I didn’t get to go… maybe next year. This year, the guest stars were Robert Picardo, Ethan Phillips, and Rick Sternbach. I did happen across Vulcan Beer, though, which honors Vulcan’s Centennial Year. The Star Trek website says: ”How often, after a tough day, have you muttered the words, “Man, I wish I could have some Vulcan Ale right about now”?” … I haven’t actually said that…but I am curious to try it.. I found it ... read more

We drove straight from Watson Lake to Northern Rockies Lodge at Muncho Lake, in one 3-4 hour segment. I can't remember any particular event, BUT we saw so many animals, it was like we were at the zoo! (Except, we were in the enclosure and they were running (walking, pacing, meandering) wild). We did a tally at the end of the trip (when we arrived at Calgary) of everything we saw that trip, but this particular leg of the trip, we saw 2 black bear, a bunch of buffalo (including one with her baby), an eagle, and a deer. About 90 miles (Mile post 543) east-ish is Whirlpool Canyon. I'm not sure what's there, but check it out and let me know! I vaguely remember talking with Shannan about going to "the Hotsprings", but I'd forgotten ... read more

Sunday 27/05/12 – This morning we rode to the BC Wildlife park, which is just outside Kamloops. We got to see grizzly and black bears, as well as raccoons, a badger, deer, coyote, wolves, lynxes etc. Adam got to feed an elk, who has a penchant for carrots. He was growing his new set of antlers, so they were covered with fuzzy brown skin and the ranger said if the antler was cut off now, the elk would bleed to death as there is so many blood vessels in the antlers helping them grow. The antlers that fell off last year were hanging on the fence; I didn’t know that they grew a new set every spring! The two grizzly bears were siblings and were only a year old. They were bought to the park as ... read more

We were about 60 miles from Prince George, BC, when Dan said his engine was making a funny sound. We pulled over and I had a listen and something was seriously wrong. My first thought was it was a bad valve or a blown head gasket. He asked me if we could limp into town like that, so we continued at about 45 MPH. That didn't stop us from visiting an ancient cedar forest along the way. We parked the bikes and took the half hour walk through this forest with cedar trees as old as 2,000 years. Beautiful majestic things they were. When we were less than 10 miles from Prince George Dan's bike stopped running. We coasted down the hill and tried to get it to fire up, but nothing. I got on my ... read more

Tuesday, August 2, 2011 Ft. Telkwa RV park. Starting mileage was 13732. 53 degrees with high clouds but sunny. 10:00 starting out time. A free RV wash came with the fee for the night’s stay, so we both washed our rigs first thing before starting out. Both of us had picked up some tiny dots/spots that looked like tar all over the outside, maybe from road construction. After taking some wild flower and other pictures of the river and mountains in view, we took to the road. The highway continued through ranch land. The animals seen were now of the domestic variety---cattle, horses, with a few instances of goats and sheep. Saw large lumber mills in several of the small towns. Also saw mining activity. Silver, copper and molybdenum are mined around the town of Houston. ... read more

2011-08-15 Stewart to Hazelton, BC The community of Hazelton sits at the confluence of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers. Our campground for the night was at the ‘Ksan Village and Museum. It is a reconstruction of the traditional Gitxsan Village which has stood at this site for centuries. There are 7 traditionally styled cedar longhouses, as well as various totem poles and dugout canoes. On the way into the village and campground you cross the Bulkley River on a single lane bridge high above the canyon and river. Originally this was just a suspension bridge with rough timber for the deck of the bridge. It would have taken a lot of nerve to have crossed the bridge at that time. Now it is made of concrete and steel which feels much safer. Another interesting place was ... read more
