Hi everyone, First of all how shocking that we haven't blogged for so long! It is a good idea when you first set one up, but finding the time to write them is quite difficult. Well, i can say that we are both Level 1 snowboard instructors having passed our 3 day assessment in week 5. Sarah has gone on to study for her Level 2 while I have decided to concentrate on my own riding and to do the 'AMP' course. There was a 3 week spell without snow which was nice for a while to enjoy the groomers (over 3 metre snow pack helps!) however it was a blessing to have the 2 days of snow early last week and now over 50cm in the last 3 days with more expected. Loads has been ... read more

You know, you'd think that the longer I stay here and the more I learn from these pro's, the better my riding gets and the more seriously I take this snowboarding lark. But no my friends. It seems that as my riding gets better, the more I am expected to ride whilst hindered by big silly outfits and heavy gold chains. Just when we thought we were safe from dressing up and making tits of ourselves on the hill, Wednesday 5th of March arrives and with it comes "Bling day". For one day only, the Fernie posse invaded the slopes pimped up gangsta style! Small children were ushered into shop doorways by concerned adults us as we swaggered through the town holding our crotches and saying "yeahhh boyeeee" a lot. The slopes were turned into a ... read more

As I write this, I've just received an email from my little sister Helen. My nephew Will was discovered the other day bouncing on the bed with his arms outstretched, calling himself "Uncle Pauly" and pretending to snowboard. He is two years old. I tell you, that's enough to weaken the eyes of any super cool, season hardened, international playboy Snowboard Instructor. I now feel as though I owe it to my wonderful nephew to raise the bar a little and give him something truly to look up to. So, one bottle of wine later and I have now enrolled on the Park Instructor Course. This means that not only do I have to get pretty competent at hitting rails and jumps, I will now have to teach them to kids who will no doubt go ... read more

I PASSED! Five weeks in and the fools have given me a license to teach people how to snowboard! YEAH BABY! But as rewarding as passing Level 1 is, I'm bloody glad it's over. No matter how confident you think your riding and teaching is, you just never know. The weather really helped - it stopped snowing and the sun has been beating down for the passed few days - perfect. So, the week went roughly like this; The first two days - Tuesday and Wednesday, were rider assessment days. We were taken around various terrain on the mountain by an assessor, and marked on our riding ability. Then on the Thursday we were split into groups of seven and told to teach two lessons each, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. My ... read more

"What do you mean this isn't a holiday?" Mmm. A month in now, and things are getting a little more serious. Over the past few weeks it's all been about improving our riding - feeling comfortable down pretty much any terrain, because in order to be instructors we naturally need to be a certain standard to teach. And now, it's less about the jumps and carving, and concentrating more about the teaching side of things. Most of this week has been full on preparation for our Level 2 instructor exam, which is next Thursday 21st. It's all about practicing our demonstration riding, exaggerating each movement to make it clearer for learners to follow etc etc. After riding for so long now it's tricky trying to remember what the hell I'm doing, and how I do it, ... read more

Hi guys, It's been a great week and we are enjoying a relaxing weekend. Thursday was a great day for boarding with fantastic sunny weather (but not so much as to melt the snow). We both started the day with our private lesson and continued practised what we had learned for the rest of the day. The evening entertainment was tobogganing for Valentine's Day. This meant going down the nursery slope in the pitch black on plastic sheets, bum sleds, small snowboards and real sleds. How no one was hurt i do not know! Was great fun esp. watching those people climbing back up the slope diving out of the way of those sledging down. The dog sledding (or slaying as one of the group referred to it as!) was a great way to start the ... read more

Hi again peeps, Days seem to be flying by now and blog messages are becoming less frequent. We are into week 4 now and we have another new instructor, tall Paul, who is tall (strangely enough) and have a ginger handlebar moustache and a mullet, even crazier he is only 22! He is a fab teacher and a great laugh, our lessons are interspersed with Jim Carey impressions, movie quotes, hill billy accents and general craziness. Level 1 exam is coming up next week so we are all nervous about our lesson demos and our skills on the nursery slopes. Did an avalanche course at the weekend which wasn't the most exciting thing and made worse but the wet and windy weather, but was very useful for safe riding. Watched Transformers last night in the surround ... read more

It's been a while, and apologies to all those that are using the blog to keep across our comings and goings. Truthfully, Anne and I have settled into our new routines nicely, with the pace of Fernie lifestyle exerting it's influence over the speed at which we accomplish activities. It's like our pace is as equally influenced by sub zero temperatures as are water molecules. It's above zero today, (1 degree), which brings me up to about typing speed, hence the blog update... :-) The season has been absolutely awesome. Local's say it's the best since 2000. (The one's that ski that is - the others who have to shovel snow say it's the worst..) We have had some tremendous skiing, and the snow really descended for our friends Marc, Lena and Marcella whilst they were ... read more

Well, it's finally happened and I am in agony. You hear of serious injuries here everyday, it's just part of the super hard core extreme sport of snowboarding, man. Our instructors are constantly comparing injuries in the bar over pitchers of beer - snapped collar bones, shattered knees, various operations on joints and muscles. And now I can now hold my head high as I impress my instructors with the story of how I stubbed my toe on the corner of the sofa. I cannot describe the pain, but it's a tough and dangerous sport my friends, and I will ride through it. But maybe not today. It's Friday anyway. And it's not snowing so it'll be rubbish. Anyway... Week 3. Progression. This week was all about pushing ourselves that little bit more by riding natural ... read more

Hi guys, It's a poor show but it's been a while since we've written; esp. from me (adam)! We finished our week of Pow on good form with instructor Glen with the usual Thirsty Thursday drinks in the resort Griz bar. This was followed by a lift home by Glen in his huge truck doing doughnuts in the car park in the snow! The weekend was full with an avalanche safety course (the first day being class based) which felt like being back at uni, but was interesting, esp. watching the cheesy 90's video with multi coloured one-piece ski suits! Sunday was our first lie in for a while and the afternoon snowmobiling. With 2 others losing their deposit so far we were quite anxious about crashing but soon forgot about that and went for it. ... read more
