Edit Blog Post
It's been a while, and apologies to all those that are using the blog to keep across our comings and goings. Truthfully, Anne and I have settled into our new routines nicely, with the pace of Fernie lifestyle exerting it's influence over the speed at which we accomplish activities. It's like our pace is as equally influenced by sub zero temperatures as are water molecules. It's above zero today, (1 degree), which brings me up to about typing speed, hence the blog update... :-)
The season has been absolutely awesome. Local's say it's the best since 2000. (The one's that ski that is - the others who have to shovel snow say it's the worst..) We have had some tremendous skiing, and the snow really descended for our friends Marc, Lena and Marcella whilst they were here. We had a great White Christmas and New Year.
I managed to both crash and bog the car in the last month. The crash was a nice slow slide into a parked car. Imagine taking your car onto an ice rink, and you'll have a good idea road quality here. There has been so much activity in terms of road graders and
other heavy duty equipment on the roads just to keep them reasonably clear of snow. The snow banks are so high dump trucks are needed to reduce them to an acceptable level. First time I have seen a city dump utilized for discarding (essentially) water..... Looking with Australian eyes, it seems such a
waste.
We have not traveled on account of road quality. The longest distance we travel is about 5km to the ski hill. Probably cover twice that distance once we are on the slopes. Last week I completed a couple of black runs, so my skiing must be improving, although the angle of descent influences my thought patterns - either to ski well, or just to survive. :-) Anne makes all runs look flat and easy - with the exeption of the last outing. I saw her fall for the first time ever. No camera at the time unfortunately! This season has more powder than scarface. I'm talking hip deep. Which is a huge challenge to ski well. You spend the effort to learn to lean forward in those wonderfully groomed runs, only to have to learn to lean
back once your in powder. If anyone out
Sleigh Ride at Christmas
Children playing at Christmas there has always wanted to see Adrian fall flat on his face -
again and again - your are missing a wonderful opportunity. This season is the last season for that nonsense. Next year when I ski backwards, it will be as intended!
Other than Skiing, Anne and I have been doing some snowshoeing, but not enough - snowshoeing is a terrific experience - walking for an hour or more into a snow forest and being completely isolated is an awesome feeling. Like your the only human left on earth. As they say, the silence is deafening, with only the sound of your snowshoes crunching and clumps of snow falling from the trees.
We have also been on a ski-doo but not enough to satisfy my feeling of loss from my CBR600. I miss those great rides around the Black Spur on the outskirts of Melbourne. Might have to do something about that this summer.....
The dogs are great, I take them walking off lead regularly in the forest and the ski-doo paths, and they love it. The cushioning of the snow seems to be helping Dougall's leg. She can't get enough out there. Most of the
Christmas
After Christmas - after all the presents have been unwrapped..... time the snow is so soft and fluffy I need to take them on a groomed, or ski-doo trail that has some solidity - otherwise they just disappear below the 2 metres of the fluffy stuff.
Thank you everyone who is keeping in contact, and sending emails, and those of you who don't - stop working so hard, chill out, and drop us a note! We still love you! We love hearing from you guys and finding out how things are going. When traveling, the things you miss most are the people you love, so we hope your all happy and healthy.
Did I tell you Fernie has a
Japanese restaurant better that anything we have had in Melbourne, and worthy of those we visited whilst in Tokyo? I mention this because I am god damned starving and Anne is suggesting we eat out and have some yummy sushi, tempura and agadashi tofu. Got to Go!
Take care, and we hope to see you soon!
