Wow, is the 13th January already?! Sorry about the long time no hear, but the time has just been racing by. Guess it always does when you’re having fun! But now we have unlimited internet access we promise updates will be much more forthcoming! So where are we? Well we had a lovely Christmas in Wickhamford with Rod, June, Sarah and James where we ate way to much fantastic food and got lots of lovely presents. But of course it went all too quickly. When Ian and Sally joined us Boxing Day night Christmas joy turned into pre holiday excitement and maybe a touch of nervous regarding what was to come. On the 27th Dec Air Canada got us to Calgary, Canada safely if a little hungry, and miraculously all our many bags arrived. The journey ... read more

So since we last update the blog we have been eagerly awaiting the white fluffy stuff and we were very excited when we looked out the window the first week in December to see loads of it covering everything in sight! Since then we have got quite a bit more which is very exciting. Em had her first experience driving in snow that morning and by the time her day shift finished, there was at least a foot on top of the car and it was still snowing hard!! We found driving in the snow was a little like 4Wdriving in the sand but minus the 4WD. Oh so I guess we should mention that we bought a car (Karl is calling it a girl’s car) it is a little Ford Aspire, which is just like ... read more

Anne and I have been busy as usual. Well, Anne has been slightly more busy than I. She has been doing heaps of charity works - either with the Salvation Army or wrapping gifts for underprivileged kids. In addition to this, she has also been preparing for the arrival of our very good friends Marc, Lena, and Marcella from Melbourne. They are swinging by for 10 days from their holiday's in the US. Oh, and Anne is also preparing for another of her terrific dinner parties. This time with 28 very close friends :-) What have I been doing? Well. As the title suggests, it's a winter wonderland here right now. As I type, snow is falling hard, with over 2 inches in the last 24 hours. So I have been getting as much value from ... read more

Anne and I have been relatively quiet over the last few weeks. Fernie is starting to ice over, although there has only been a single day when there has been any snow on the ground in town, in any great measure. Last week we received a few inches of snow. It happened to be the very day I sat for my BC Driving License. Visitors to Canada have only 6 months in which their foreign drivers license is valid. Owning a car also meant that insurance in invalid if your not legally licensed. So I had 6 months in which to perform the test. 3 months of Summer. I did it on the coldest, and most slippery day of the year. No snow the day before, and rain washed all of the snow away the day ... read more

Ok so we have been pretty slack in updating the blog- sorry! Here is a bit of an update leading on from the last entry: After enjoying our time east it was time to head back to the west. We had a couple of days in the big smoke in Toronto. Whilst it was good to see, neither of us were overly impressed by Toronto as it is just one BIG city but didn’t have too much appeal for us (unless maybe we were loaded and could go out on a big shopping spree, which for the record we aren’t). We experienced some temperatures that made us feel we were back home 31 C and so humid! Whilst in Toronto we didn’t do too much apart from wander around, go to an amateur comedy night and ... read more

After all that traveling, what could be better than being taken out for a 'stroll' into the mountains? We booted up, put the leads on the dogs and went for a 3.5 hour hike with Ian. We have been giving the dogs a liquid form of Glucosamine and Chondroitin, and that has helped dougall's leg immensely. Surprisingly she managed the hike with minimal soreness - not a great deal more tired than Otis. Hopefully she continues to improve, given the cold winter days here. Speaking of those, there has been no snow in town yet. Very disappointing. Although the locals are very happy to have a shorter season of snow than normal. There is some on the forecast for the next week, so we can only hope. We hope everything is going well for everyone back ... read more

A valiant attempt was made at Mount Fisher, but before we got to the 'Saddle', where the narrow path and steep drop offs begin, the weather turned bad and we were snowed out. It's a difficult hike - nearly every step was uphill. To give you an idea, it took 6.5 hours to complete a measly 6.5km. We turned back within an hour of the summit. It will now have to wait until next spring. It doesn't look like the peaks will loose their snow caps now. The weather is getting very cold. Somebody had built a cool Inukshuk, which is a cairn, but in human form. Being an out of towner, I found the hike an awesome experience - hiking in 3-4 inches of snow on a mountain was something I had never experienced, however ... read more

The title says it all - Bulgaria or Bust! Anne and I are off to Bulgaria next week for 10 days. Not a holiday per se, but an opportunity in investing in that country after it gained entry in the EU. We are flying into Istanbul, then taking a train to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Ideally we want a couple of investments and a place to call home in the coming years. I guess this means we will need to learn Russian! Stay tuned for lot's of photo's from this culture capital. Anne and I have been enjoying the benefits of labor over the last couple of weeks. We both have been helping friends get things done. Especially with the coming of Fall. Completed another couple of trails from Island Lake Lodge The weather has ... read more

Low cloud hangs over the mountains today, there are no signs of it blowing off. This week, I think, marks the end of those lazy summer days of 30 degrees. Lunchtime and we are not above 10 degrees. Fall - as we locals call it here - has set in. This is what we came for, so I'm not about to whine about the cold. After our trip to the west coast, I was hankering to get back to serious hiking. Just lucky I was, as Ian was preparing a voyage of pain over the labor day long weekend. A Hike to the Three Sisters, one of the largest peaks that surround Fernie was on the menu. It was a stunning trip, with loads of variety. Thick forests, gushing waterfalls, the Bisaro Cave, complete with stalagmites ... read more

Anne and I have been busy riding bitumen over the last few weeks - we have traveled to Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Seattle, and a few places in between. About 2500km and a combination of camping and hotels. Jumping over the top of the Canadian Rockies introduces a huge variety in terms of scenery - we have seen deserts, plains, thick wet forests, and, of course, Mountains. Lotsa Mountains. One of the most beautiful places we saw along the way was a little town called Hope. It's located about an hour and a half east of Vancouver, and has a population of about 6000. Many of you have already seen this pretty little town - it was the filming location for the only good Rambo movie - First Blood in 1982. It's other claim to fame is ... read more
