Coeur d'Alene to Fairmont Hot Springs. Today you could say I was in the "Hot Seat" all day. As we left Coeur d'Alene and headed North toward the Canadian border I was in the passenger seat with the morning sun streaming through my window. After lunch I was in the driver's seat with the afternoon sun streaming through the window!! Don't know how that happened! (I DO!!! DH) The morning drive was through very pretty country of farms, cattle ranches and Pine forests. However, once we crossed into BC there was a dramatic change. Here we are back where there are REAL MOUNTAINS!! We are on the west side of the Rockies and they are awesome. Too bad they are bare at this time of year, but they are still quite spectacular. Drove up to Fairmont ... read more

Into Canada at last! Up the Columbia River Valley in British Columbia Tues Sept 8-Wed Sept 9: The day had come to enter Canada! We were ready, we thought. We'd laid in some fresh provisions and pulled our passports out of their hiding place. Not many people were at the border crossing on Route 95 so it looked like a piece of cake. Little did we know we were moving into the realm of illegality. The guard at the crossing wanted to know how long we'd be in Canada. “We're not sure,” I replied, happy to be a grey nomad at last, with no firm commitments. “That's not good enough,” he said firmly. Think, Martha. “We're going up through Banff and then heading to Vancouver, then Denman Island for about a week to visit a friend. ... read more

Day 35. Sunday. I was up about 09.00 and headed back over to Rita and Jim's trailer for breakfast which went off without a hitch. Hold that thought. Kevin decided he needed to do some laundry before they continued on their voyage so I joined him because it was about time I did a couple loads too. Once all the cloths were clean it was about time for lunch. Spaghetti was on the menu and we were all good till Kevin dumped his plate on the deck. After that was scraped up, hosed off and we finished eating it was time for a little r&r under the trees where Kevin sat on and broke his second chair of the weekend, did'nt know where his keys, glasses or phone was. This is why we love Kevin. He's ... read more

Day 34. 11,423Km Today it was time to hook up with my friends from Kitchener again. Monica's cousin has a cottage outside Cranbrook, BC so that was my destination today. I got to take the very pleasant drive to Iridium Springs again on the way there. I had forgotten about the hug stone cut just as you descended into town from the East. The rock actually curves back out over you a bit. There was no need to stop along the way because I fueled up in Lake Louise before I left. I also filled my fresh water tank which I emptied over the previous days because the provincial park only had electricity and I did'nt fill it before I parked. Emptying the dump tanks took way too long this morning. I think half of Denmark ... read more

Happy birthday..to me! So the departure of stan the van was off to a slight delay. The boys (zach and ben) did a bit of home mechanics and decided they would replace the rotors themselves. All seemed ready to go when we deccided we should test it out and make sure it had been done right, low and behold the brakes now did not seem to really stop the car, merely slow it down..problem. we then took it to good ole canadian tyre to get hte problem figured out and $567 later, we now have a new brake system - kinda important but still a blow to the budget. We also discovered the wicked 5 CD stacker stereo doesnt work along with ole Stan being able to start about 50% of the time.. We finally ended ... read more

Good evening all, I know you have not heard from me for several days. Lack of WiFi in the great Northwest is few and far between. I am now realizing how much time it takes to pull this off and keep everyone posted. And thanks for all the great remarks. I would love to answer each and every one, but suffice it to say, I love reading your remarks and posting to the travel blog. I stayed at the Dawson Aurora Suites last night to get caught up on laundry and blog to that point...great to sleep in a bed. Now, I'm not complaining about sleeping on the ground because it seems to be good for my back! Did you know they serve continental breakfast from 4:00 to 10:00 am? Sun started to come up around ... read more

Good evening, I traveled from Hinton, AB to Dawson Creek, BC today. It was a lot of driving with a few stops along the way. The drive from Hinton to Grand Cache and then to Grand Prairie was a very relaxing trip as I was pretty much the only one on the road. had to put on my chaps as it started to rain. The area is rolling mountains of pine trees. Industry along the route is logging and oil wells. But I did take time to spend a few minutes in Grande Cache, a little community built on a mountain plateau at 4,200 feet. There are 21 mountain peaks and two river valleys. The town was incorporated in 1960 so it is a relatively new community. The name comes from the French word "cache" which ... read more

Well, we're in Canada. It was a pretty long drive, going about 540 miles (865 km) heading into Cranbrook, BC. I was expecting it to be a long boring drive, but it was actually kind of interesting. We passed through Polson, MT, which might be the place of a vacation home in the future. It was quite nice, as you can see from the monstrous 2 pictures we took when going through. Besides Laurie slicing her finger wide open while trying to adjust her sunglasses, not much happened. Lots of driving. Lots of scenery. Few pictures.... read more
