THE STAMPEDE The title is not just a quote from Robin Williams in the movie 'Jumanji'. There are two types of directions you run when the Stampede is in town in Calgary. You run to it or run as far away from it as you can. The 10 day event known as the 'Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth' has so much depth to it I find it hard to work out where to start explaining it. It is event that brings in so many groups of people from all over the world and you would be mistaken for thinking that the common dress is to wear Cowboy gear in these parts or as my exchange teaching partner Mel would say in 'Cow town'! STAMPEDE PARADE The Stampede starts with its sneak peak day where most Calgarians ... read more

So, I have another two days to tell about. Yesterday was our trip west. We started at Gananoque in the Thousand Islands and, as usual, left later than we planned. We'll have to do something about that trend. We drove directly to Toronto to meet Seymour and Doris at Mother Tuckers restaurant near the airport. We had a lovely meal and a wonderful time with Seymour & Doris. Dad called us on Skype but we could barely hear him with all the noise around. Anyway, we transferred two big suitcases to Seymour's car, said our goodbyes and headed off to the airport with a lot less luggage than we'd been lugging around before. What a relief! We got lost in the airport a bit. If you think Ben Gurion is confusing you should try Pearson! Imagine ... read more

Geo: 51.0451, -114.063In the end, this was a good trip with the boys - definitely not as wild as the typical stag, but infinitely more gourmet and packed with a hella good amount of deliciousness. Who needs the debauchery and bling of Vegas, when you can have cheap Spanish wine and gourmet Basque cuisine? There's something to be said for just chilling out with the boys and shooting the shit over a coffee or beer, while watching the world go by on a languid Spanish day. And how often can you drag a group of guys overseas, away from their families, for a week and a half? This trip was therapeutic, as I finally got over all the resentment and anger I had over being mistreated by Pat over the past few years. Really, it was just ... read more

Geo: 51.0472, -114.08Some of you know me ... or at least, you think you may know me. For years now, all you've seen or heard of Lil Buddha has been some random reference to me, or a poorly-composed and blurry photo of myself in front of some famous monument, or even worse, on a plate of food, as if I was some freaky pink mutant garnish. How would you like being treated like that, presented as some lowly prop, and the butt of a joke that you aren't even in on? Sure, my life might seem glamorous, bouncing from exotic locale to exotic locale, but I never get to actually enjoy where we travel to. It certainly isn't me that is taking in all those wonderful sights, enjoying those gourmet meals, or guzzling down all that ... read more

Geo: 51.0867, -114.129Today was a day of feeling human again! We had a dozy morning, left to our own devices as bob had a meeting in town and becca slept from her night shift! A nice, long, hot, powerful shower where my hair could be properly washed! We washed all of our clothes and tumbled dried them so we smell wonderful for our last week away. James watched the mighty bluejays win a baseball game .... I'm starting to get the rules slightly now, but basically it was a sofa morning in front of the tv!! Once the game was over we left b&b to their masses of paperwork and ventured into the mighty Calgary for a few hrs. The transit station (tram to you and me!) is a stones through from the apartment, so once ... read more
