Middle East » Lebanon » Beirut August 30th 2008

Middle East » Turkey » Eastern Anatolia » Van August 29th 2008

There were many times I saw Van Lake in my dreams. I don't know why actually, those dreams usually start from Ankara or Istanbul and after a ride with a car I end up in the coast of Van Lake. Maybe why this place so much took a place in my under concience is I always find this great junk of water which is in the middle of the high mountains so far from the sea, interesting. I should have seen a place where occupied so much place in my dreams without being there even once, so I decided to do that in a long weekend holliday this month, a friend from the university days was also eager to see the region so we two headed to Van togather. The flight from Istanbul to Van takes ... read more

Found among the abundant treasures that comprise magical Syria, high-speed internet connections are not. So, I am finally getting around to tossing a few more pictures up from those blissful days in June. In unrelated news, here's a link to Matt's blog: http://istanbulletins.blogspot.com/ He seems to be enjoying life in Turkey.... read more

Middle East » Syria » South » Damascus August 28th 2008

We have been spending some time in Damascus taking a closer look at some of Syria’s history. On the outskirts of the city, just off the road to the bus station, stands a memorial to a very sensitive event known here as the 6 October War, but more commonly known globally as the Yom Kippur War. In 1968 Syria lost control of the Golan Heights during the six day war with Israel. On 6 October 1973 Syria’s armed forces were deemed strong enough by the president to try to recapture their territory. A bloody battle ensued and many soldiers on both sides gave their lives. It is not our place in this blog to comment on the rights or wrongs of actions in this region, past or present, so we are just going to tell you ... read more

Middle East » Syria » South » Damascus August 28th 2008

With time running out we have been trying to finish off what’s left of Syria’s ancient history for us to see. That’s involved going to some familiar places as well as exploring some new areas of the city for us. Returning to the National Museum of Damascus was strange. Our guide book recommended visiting when you first arrive and then once again before leaving, once you have seen the original sites of the collection. We feel this is good advice as we really enjoyed both of our visits. This time we got a bit more time to see the detail inside the Synagogue from Doura Europos, although the frescoes have clearly faded more since our guide book was written. We also managed to go down to the Tomb of Yarhai. This had been closed on our ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Southeastern Anatolia » Gaziantep August 28th 2008

When I initially did some research on Turkey and learned about places I wanted to visit, Gaziantep (Antep) was at the top of my list. Well off the tourist trail, and paradise if you have a sweet tooth. It has been dubbed the baklava capital of the world, perhaps because it has over 180 pastry shops dotted around the city that produce tonnes of baklava, which is then sent throughout the country - even to the President! I just had to see what all the fuss was about! So as part of my plan I wanted to meet a local who knew where to get the best baklava, kebaps and other culinary delights that this city had to offer. That's when Onal, a fellow Couchsurfer, came into the picture. When I read that eating was one ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai August 28th 2008

Dubai was nothing that I expected.. The first thing that hit me when I got off the plane was the heat and humidity.. I arrived around two in the afternoon and the temp was already up to 105 F and 90% humidity. I had booked a reasonable hotel before I left Jordan and when I arrived they made me wait an hour before giving me my room, I didn't even say anything and they moved me up to a suite!!!! I have to say it was a nice change from what I had been staying in it was like an apartment. I waited till the evening to venture out to see what I could in walking distance and soon found the Gold Souk. WOW!! There was over 1000 stores selling anything gold you could ever ask ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai August 28th 2008

Arrived in Dubai early this morning - was a very long 8 and a half hour flight with a vomiting child sitting behind us (it is amazing how much vomit can come out of one child). The Dubai airport was a little stressful for us not knowing where to go to get visas as Hong Kong airport told us to pick them up at the Dubai airport upon arrival. After mentioning to some airport security man that we were Australian we didn't need to get a visa and caught a taxi to our hotel which was literally in the desert in the middle of nowhere! Pigged out on another fried breakfast but had a go at turkey bacon as no pork allowed in Dubai - tasted like the real stuff. After a nice long shower and ... read more
